Classic Denim Jacket - Any Way to Look Current in It?

CeRaVie · 30/05/2025 17:21

The shops are still selling them and plenty of people still loving them with a midi/maxi dress. It’s easy.

My jacket has sentimental value, so I am keeping it but I just feel so naff wearing it. Is there any way to wear it and still look stylish? I know all about wear what you like, but I am not sure I do like to wear it 10 year after buying it.

What if she does? People should just wear what they want without petty little digs like yours 🙄

No doubt you wear things that others would think are naff but that’s nothing to do with anyone else.

Totally agree. Just wear what you like and what you think suits you. No need to be a sheep and just follow what’s deemed to be ‘on trend’.

It's naff and does not look gorgeous, not even on the model.

@CeRaVie , last weekend I saw lots of women wearing trucker style denim jackets. They were different ages.

What you wear is carried off if you wear it with confidence.
If you don't feel confident in it, either put it away or pass it on.

There is nothing wrong with being or looking middle-aged.

I like your jacket and would wear it @CeRaVie . I'd not wear the Ner-a-Porter ones or something called a shacket, or anything described as midaxi.

In your opinion. I don't much like denim jackets. I think that one looks great.

I never took to the denim jacket, floral midi and trainers look. I love floral midis but that combination to my eyes ruined the dresses.

EveryKneeShallBow · 31/05/2025 10:23

I’m in my 60s. I’m delighted to wear a 40s mum uniform. #middleagedandproud

EcruCardigan · 31/05/2025 10:24

If you like them, fine. I see them as fashion, whereas a denim jacket is workwear, so a stylised one doesn't sit right with me. Same with trainers, I don't understand why people wear the big clumpy trainers that look like but aren't running shoes.

I wear denim jackets because of the practicalities of having lots of pockets.

Whorl · 31/05/2025 10:37

I don't think the floaty midi-dress with trainers and a denim jacket was ever really fashionable, it was an easy wear, and still obviously is, but it was never high fashion.

Similar to skinny jeans, they were actually briefly fashionable in the early noughties, and then hung around as an easy wear, the taste makers moved on very quickly.

I'm not saying one should or should not care about such things, 'tis fact though.

Where do you think our old clothes go? That's right, they go to charity, Ebay or Vinted. Without people changing their wardrobes, there would be no charity shop etc clothes for all the clever "circular economy" people to preach about buying.

I don't buy fast fashion. But after about three years of wearing something, I get sick to death of it and am ready for a change.

You want to keep wearing your comfortable slacks? Crack on!

Edited

Bit odd (not to mention snide) to assume people are dressing in 'comfortable slacks' simply because they're not slaves to fashion.

CandiedPrincess · 31/05/2025 10:50

I think literally anything goes these days. Walk down your local high street - you see people wearing all sorts.

And these middle-aged fashionistas who think they are oh-so-cool because they're not wearing a floral midi and trainers, are probably wearing something that a whole other section of society will think is completely hideous. (Case in point: the ageing fashion influencers on Instagram who think they are 'edgy' but look like desperados).

Wear what makes you happy, nobody gives a shit when you die whether you wore skinny jeans when they weren't 'on trend'. It's all so trivial at the end of the day.

Denim jackets are a classic piece, they don't go out of style because they have never been 'in fashion' - they are a staple.

Well you better have a go at the OP as well then, because she said she felt naff wearing it.

It's a middle aged uniform. That's great, if you like a uniform. I like to look a little different.

ahaha but you don’t look a little different do you, you are following fashion like a sheep 🤔

Ha!

So anything goes unless you're a middle-aged desperado.

Got it!

PaquitaSalas · 31/05/2025 11:08

Ageing = desperate. Got it. Thanks for that helpful note.

Absolutely not, middle-aged desperados are welcome to wear whatever they want too! Nobody. Cares. Is the point.

alittlequinnie · 31/05/2025 11:12

I've just bought a denim jacket from Vinted. I watched a load and time and time again they were sold before I had a chance to buy or make an offer.

So whether they are in or out - they are certainly being snapped up on Vinted!

Mine's very similar to the OPs - I've purchaed it becuase the one I had is a little tight! Thanks menopause!

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 31/05/2025 11:29

I have a collection of denim / denim style jackets, longer, shorter, collarless, coloured, frayed, dyed.... I wear and style them with a very wide variety of clothing from crochet to daytime sequins. My youngest version is 3 years, oldest an original US men's Levi 38 year's old and counting. Like all clothing, it suits my body shape, lifestyle and are practically indestructible, which makes them a cost per wear gem too. I love fashion but not marketer / influencer version of it and really think we too often confuse style with fashion. Denim jackets are a classic item, easy to wear and maintain imo, why would we not have a clothing item that punches far above its cost and versatility in our wardrobe.

justtaketheeffingpicture · 31/05/2025 11:37

ResidentPorker · 30/05/2025 19:47

Oh the horror. Imagine wearing perfectly nice, attractive and comfortable clothes that you already own, instead of gormlessly buying new clothes because people who are paid to flog you new ones have told you that you must.

And looking like a Victorian waif but it's cost you an arm and a leg 😂😂

justtaketheeffingpicture · 31/05/2025 11:38

There are so many shapes and styles of denim jackets now though - some look more current than the original one.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2025 11:52

When I was about 13 I had a very pale wash, really soft denim biker jacket. I would kill to own it again. I loved it and it went with just about everything.

Pastapenguin · 31/05/2025 12:23

A denim jacket is a classic for a reason- screw current, dress for your body and your style and you’ll look timeless.

The concept of a denim jacket has been around for decades but the shape of denim jackets has altered many times over the years. Levi and Wrangler might have kept their basic style but even they have made many different styles over the years.

I had a traditional Levi's one years ago. I never liked it and I've never liked the over floral dress look. It's possibly the only failed purchase I've had. It went to a charity shop.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2025 15:53

I reckon that this jacket could have been worn anytime between about 1965 and today and be absolutely fine, depending on what's being worn with it. https://www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/clothing/women/truckers-sherpas/the-original-trucker-jacket/p/299450036

Mine looks exactly like that, but in a slightly lighter colour. I bought mine from M & S five years ago.

millop21 · 31/05/2025 18:03

Interesting thread. Love a denim jacket and a summer dress. Just wondering when does dated become classic? Is it a time thing? Like so many years? Or is it a fashion thing?

Isometimeswonder · 31/05/2025 19:48

I like my denim jacket with wide leg trousers and trainers or sandals. And plain tshirt.
I have a black one and a indigo denim.

The 'youth' tonight (hipster type bar) were all wearing 90s style pale, baggy jeans with crop tops, or droopy midi skirts in pale colours. Lots of denim jackets too, of all colours and sizes.

That’s what 48 year old me was wearing last night too, but, shock, horror, I also had an off white denim jacket.

Crop top and jeans or midi skirt? I'm not at all shocked by your denim jacket btw - I've got 4 of them and they get a lot of wear at this time of year.

Crop top and baggy jeans, I do have a pale pink droopy midi skirt though. I’m all for the 90s revival!
