Classic Denim Jacket - Any Way to Look Current in It?

CeRaVie · 30/05/2025 17:21

The shops are still selling them and plenty of people still loving them with a midi/maxi dress. It’s easy.

My jacket has sentimental value, so I am keeping it but I just feel so naff wearing it. Is there any way to wear it and still look stylish? I know all about wear what you like, but I am not sure I do like to wear it 10 year after buying it.

Personally I think they are awful and could only imagine cutting off the sleeves, bleaching the denim and putting it on a young man who looks like Pedro Pascal for it to be ok.

But we don’t all have to agree!

Or Benson Boone 😄

Being snide about people wearing something you consider dated doesn't sound "fun and stimulating".

We all buy far too many clothes and our poor planet is drowning under the weight of things that are chucked because they're deemed unfashionable.

I'm afraid I don't see buying new garments because I've been told I must a particularly desirable trait.

But you don’t have to stop wearing it. If you are not concerned about fashion then it’s simple. Just wear what you want. There is no one standing over you with a gun forcing you to be fashionable.

CombatBarbie · 30/05/2025 21:40

Derailed again.... Op can you post a picture of the jacket and let the magic happen.

What’s wrong with that?

That’s what I usually wear, the denim jacket I have is pink though, not the usual blue.

I feel good in my dresses!

There’s nothing wrong with it. But I see it on TikTok allllll the time that it’s a “Mum uniform” and the all the gen-Z’rs think it’s hilarious.

weareallqueens · 30/05/2025 21:50

Well God forbid the Gen-Zs should find us ridiculous. They are very well dressed. Love the grey sweatpants.

And you seriously think anyone cares a flying fig what the gen-Zers think?

😂😆😏

@CapitalAtRisk what does looking a little "different" mean? Because I am
Picturing you in band t shirts and high top converse and midi skirts feeling oh so cool and I'm here to tell you..... no. Pop on a floral maxi, a nice pair of superga and a lovely 7/8 sleeve denim jacket and you'll feel all warm and fuzzy.

But also, honestly, let's just be comfy and feel good about ourselves.

Well, I wore pretty much the first outfit in this description to go to the pub tonight, except my Converse were low top - and I'm here to tell you yes. And I took my denim jacket (black, slightly oversized DKNY) for when it got cold.

Supergas are horrible imo.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/05/2025 23:05

The 'youth' tonight (hipster type bar) were all wearing 90s style pale, baggy jeans with crop tops, or droopy midi skirts in pale colours. Lots of denim jackets too, of all colours and sizes.

I don’t think it’s about the actual jacket - more in what you wear it with. Did you click on some of those shown to see the styling? (Usually second photo.)

That's such good advice. (Although it rather gives the lie to the idea floated by CapitalatRisk of wanting to look different as almost everyone I clicked on paired them with double denim jeans)

This is with a dress- there's lots of similar shaped dresses available to recreate this look.

Denim jacket and dress

Actually I don't like denim jackets but that one's gorgeous with the plain, pleated dress, Mary Jane shoes and that quite formal Queen Elizabeth style handbag.

What's a droopy midi skirt ?

Really thin cotton in pale, washed out colours.

TheOGCCL · 30/05/2025 23:49

I bought a denim jacket recently. Have worn with navy chinos, navy joggers and I quite like double denim, albeit it’s not that great for my Autumn colouring. I’ve never worn skirts or dresses so am staying out of that one.

RobertaFirmino · 31/05/2025 00:02

Is a bog standard denim jacket from, say, Levi's or Wrangler ever actually in or out? People have worn them for decades. The style remains the same. It's like trench coats, leopard print and white shirts (crisp ones, obvs.). Never cutting edge, never a fashion fail.

Gettingbysomehow · 31/05/2025 00:12

I prefer denim shirts personally longer length. They are so versatile and more easily layered.

TurquoiseDress · 31/05/2025 00:19

I still love my blue denim jacket from Warehouse circa 2000 while in my early twenties at university.

It has spanned 3 decades now that I’m the other side of 40

Love wearing it with knee length dress…no idea if I’m current/on trend/whatever…since it’s been 25 years since I got it, I’m certain it’ll be back ‘in fashion’ soon!

In any case, I’ll just keep wearing it!!

Gnomegarden32 · 31/05/2025 00:21

If you love it but want to look up to date I'd be tempted to just keep it and wait till the look comes back around

TheSlantedOwl · 31/05/2025 00:24

All the internalised sexism and ageism we’ve absorbed over the years comes out in our hatred of clothes which make us look like the middle aged women we are. Like hating your own reflection.

OP wear your jacket whichever way you want.

Edited

£621 for a denim jacket!!!😱😱😱😱

Whorl · 31/05/2025 04:15

I've never owned a 'classic' denim jacket.

However if there was one in my wardrobe and I wanted to modern it up, I'd triple denim that bugger.

I'd wear a pair of flared jeans, with a high waist, good belt of your choice, and a chambray shirt.

I'd lean in to the denim.

Pair of suede cowboy boots.

You're good to go.

Wiltingasparagusfern · 31/05/2025 04:48

I think it’s the fit and the brand, not the actual denim jacket. When a denim jacket is fitted it looks dated. But you still see lots of people wearing eg an oversized men’s Levi’s or Wrangler one, or a shacket type one that’s almost like a very thick shirt. I think they look great on women. These have never been mum uniform really though,

JoyousGuide · 31/05/2025 06:34

Have you thought about dyeing it to freshen it up? Dylon machine is super easy and you can either go classic denim / black or a funky colour ?
