Classic Denim Jacket - Any Way to Look Current in It?

The shops are still selling them and plenty of people still loving them with a midi/maxi dress. It’s easy.

My jacket has sentimental value, so I am keeping it but I just feel so naff wearing it. Is there any way to wear it and still look stylish? I know all about wear what you like, but I am not sure I do like to wear it 10 year after buying it.

Thing is Ive yet to see an alternative that looks as good as a decently fitting denim jacket.
Lots of good suggestions that might work with an outfit or two but your basic denim jacket seems to go with almost anything! I dont want to have to buy 14 different jackets to match my outfits, Id rather just chuck a denim jacket on and run the risk of looking old!

It's all subjective of course but I don't think denim jackets do go with almost anything. Quite the opposite.

EcruCardigan · 02/06/2025 20:33

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle , I think that's the idea. Smile
I laugh at myself sometimes if I'm wearing white leisure shoes and a denim jacket.

Vogue: Why A Denim Jacket Is The Only Light Layer You Need This Spring

Also Vogue last year: Despite the many tempting versions and inventive iterations of reworked denim pieces—like cropped jackets, full skirts, and even shoes—we can’t underestimate the power of a jean jacket in its most original form.

“The fitted denim jacket of the early aughts is too limiting in terms of form and function,” she says. “A slightly larger jacket can be worn on its own, over a sweater, or under outerwear as an added layer, ensuring you’ll reach for it again and again.”

I rest my case.

Perfect for balmy evenings.

I think denim is a great go-to fabric. After some cancer treatment and ending up lopsided with a chemo tum, I dived into safe black elasticated trousers and long pattern tops. 2 years later my daughter has persuaded me back into jeans (a great soft wide-legged pair from Monsoon) and I'm over the moon. They hug my belly in and are very comfortable but, more importantly, I'd forgotten how denim goes with all colours, patterns and can be dressed up or down so I'm going to get my aged denim jacket out again (but not do double denim!) and buy some short boxy tops. I feel rejuvenated by denim !

I just did a Pinterest search for oversized denim jackets and now I want one. I’d wear all these looks!

Gorgeous!

RampantIvy · 04/06/2025 17:43

I'd look homeless in those oversized jackets.

I have just seen a beautiful (to me) jacket, but it is ££££ and I don't go out often enough to justify the price.

I am a jewel winter and this is one of my star colours.

Go out lots more then @RampantIvy . HTH.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 04/06/2025 17:58

I'd look homeless in those oversized jackets.

Without wanting to disparage anyone who has the misfortune to be homeless so do the women in those Pinterest pictures. There's a difference between deliberately over-sized and the last thing left in the charity shop. They look like the latter.

Its def subjective. I have a feeling that we would probably hate each others clothing choices if we saw them!😉

I was wearing a very dated denim jacket the other day (lightwash, fitted, old school style...I even pushed the sleeves up!).
Thing is it was super flattering and did amazing things for my waist so Im going to treat it as the classic wardrobe staple it is and keep wearing it.

Not that I dont have options. I have oversized denim, (faux) leather and suede jackets which I wear as well but sometimes you cant beat a classic!

EcruCardigan · 04/06/2025 18:03

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle I think they look like they are wearing jackets that are far too big.
@henlake7 I think fitted is best. (I generally wear them slightly too big, but I've got an 'old-fashioned' fitted one somewhere.

Edited

I agree about them looking as if they are wearing jackets that are too big. There's a fine line between looking good in deliberately over-sized clothing and just being too big.

EcruCardigan · 04/06/2025 18:39

Those look like they are size 8 women in men's XXXL jackets.

henlake7 · 04/06/2025 18:59

What is that look all about? I suppose it helps to be young and skinny (not realiesing that one day you will look like a giant lump all by yourself, without even needing the oversized clothes!LOL).
Thats the thing unless you are skinny and preferably tall wearing oversized jackets with wide trousers or long skirts will just make you look like a sack of spuds.

Divebar2021 · 04/06/2025 19:30

I think the pictures look fine - I think describing them as homeless looking is a bit OTT. What I would say is the young women in the picture look good but the outfits are mid at best. Put a Middle aged woman with a different figure and a sensible haircut and it’s going to look completely different and not in a good way.

I think there is plenty of inspiration to be had out there if you want it. Gemma Lyon’s ( not sure of spelling) loves a fitted jacket and always looks chic. Quite like this oversized jacket that has been cut and left with a raw hem for Me & Em… slightly tempted to try this with a white oversized jacket I don’t otherwise wear. Whether these individual looks resonate is of course a matter of taste but they’re not frumpy and they retain a modern look.

Well, I think they look cool, and happy.
All this chat about tight jackets, being a “jewel winter” and “looking homeless” make me think we are living in different worlds, somewhat, when it comes to style.

EcruCardigan · 04/06/2025 19:39

@Wiltingasparagusfern We have different tastes. We have different lifestyles, interests, budgets etc. It would be a dullplace if we all liked the same llooks.

@Divebar2021 , those are fine, they are nothing like the 'size 8 in XXXL' photos.

Divebar2021 · 04/06/2025 19:45

I love oversized urban looks so I’m not in the gang that hates on that.

henlake7 · 04/06/2025 19:48

I dont think any of those pictures would appeal to me. Other then a red jumper its all very neutral and plain....hardly a pattern in sight!
Just out of curiosity whats the feeling on pattern with a denim jacket? Obviously florals are the antichrist but can you wear your jacket with other patterns and still look current?
(I would go into print withdrawal if I had to wear those very plain outfits!😆).

zaxxon · 04/06/2025 19:51

Maybe this is the answer to the OP's original question - she could take the scissors to hers?

I'm not even kidding. When I get bored of something, it can be quite fun to get to work on it with scissors, needle and thread, and the fabric scraps bag. It doesn't always work, but if you weren't wearing the item anyway, you haven't lost much!

EcruCardigan · 04/06/2025 19:58

Just pass it on.

Of the 5 photos:

  1. The long shirt and trousers chop the height . A white dress would be better.
  2. it shouldn't work but it does.
  3. Looks good
  4. No. Too boxy and the raw bottom doesn't do it for me. I kind of get it but...
  5. The wrong button is fastened so it looks too small on the shoulders and looks flat and wide elsewhere

I always look better in jewel colours.

And as a slimish "middle aged woman with a sensible haircut" those baggy styles really are unflattering on me.

manicpixieschemegirl · 04/06/2025 20:39

For me, I need to be really intentional when wearing prints @henlake7. Leopard is pretty classic but only when styled right, ie a different stratosphere to anything which could be perceived as Bette Lynch-esque. Mixing clashing prints in a deliberate way can also look really cool. Basically, avoid anything that gives ‘Bon Marche’.

Check out India De Beaufort on insta - she does bold colour and print really well.

Oh thank goodness, I was beginning to think I was odd! I hate fitted clothing and mostly live in oversized stuff, don't know, or care, what my
colours" are, and have never described anyone as "looking homeless" in my life. And - I'm past middle age and have a "sensible haircut".

EcruCardigan · 04/06/2025 22:22

Same here @NattyTurtle59 , but there's oversized and there's the wrong size.
I know what my colours are but I don't normally wear them.
