I know it's my fault I'm fat but I'm working on it. I'm also tall - 5'10. I'm looking for a lovely outfit for my son's wedding but everything is awful. If I was just large or just tall I'd probably be OK but I'm stuck with polyester horror or dreadful old woman clothes or a few go to Boden dresses that are large enough and long enough.

Does anyone have recommendations for anywhere stylish for a tall size 20/22? Please don't say Chesca - I'm not in my 80s!

Thank you!

If you put wedding into Long Tall Sally they do some wedding outfits up to size 24 for tall ladies and shoes too. .might be worth a look?

Mumwithbaggage · 26/05/2025 23:18

It's very polyseter though - I want something a bit better quality. It's the double whammy of taller and wider unfortunately.

What sort of thing are you after?
I'm the same height and size as you and feel your pain

OneFingerOneThumbKeepMoving · 26/05/2025 23:22

Maybe have a look at UllaPopken. They have some nice things.

My mum is 6 foot she usually goes into a big John Lewis for Ascot or weddings and nearly always finds something lovely.

Try Mango, they don't explicitly say 'tall' but their models wearing the clothes are usually around 5'9 so you'll see the length they fit at Dresses and jumpsuits 2025 | MANGO United Kingdom

The same with Monsoon Occasion Dresses | Women's Maxi & Midi Occasion Dresses | Monsoon UK

Ulla Popken is a big no from me! Very frumpy! If you saw a photo of me on my own I look in proportion (stomach aside but I'm working on it) but next to my 5'3 friends I look like a giant and hate it.

Long Tall Sally was fine back in the day but it's very much like all the other cheap catalogue firms now.

I just want a lovely dress to wear for my son's wedding. Summery vibe and long enough. Happy to pay £200-£300 if I really like it.

I do OK for everyday clothes - bit of M and S, Boden, H and M - but I'm thrown with finding a stylish event dress.

I was in JL this weekend looking for stuff for a friend but nothing nice for me.

When is the wedding? I know you said what size you wear now but roughly what size will you be when your son gets married?

BusyExpert · 26/05/2025 23:37

I am an 18 to 20 and I never have any issue buying stylish clothes. I would die rather than buy clothes from Cesca! It very much depends on what you like and your budget but as you say there is Boden, Seasalt do larger sizes. Hobbs go up to a 22 and has some pretty dresses. Adini and Landsend do larger sizes and if you are really pushing the boat out try Marina Rinaldi.(££££)
if you like BoHo ish clothes try Sahara I love their clothes and jewellery and I have recently found a company called Aligne,( on line only) I bought a dress from there which I love and constantly try to find an opportunity to wear, The styles are a bit off the wall but very stylish.

good luck

Mumwithbaggage · 26/05/2025 23:40

@PerkyGreenCat not long till the wedding. Happy to wait a month to buy a dress but need a back up! I have broad shoulders and a long body so even if I lose the weight I still look lumpen. I sound I right blob don't I?

@xmasdealhunter I'd forgotten Mango so thank you. Nothing wedding suitable but a couple of nice dresses for other stuff in there.

@BusyExpert thank you, will take a look. As I said, regular dressing isn't an issue, just smarter longer things are hard. Hobbs aren't over long, plus for a wedding I imagine lots of the guests will have gone there to shop! I've not bought from Marina Rinaldi but some of it looks quite safe. Will have a look at Sahara and Aligne!

I have just had a look at the Sahara website and they have some IMO lovely occasion wear. the advantage is that they are generally designed to be loose and so will continue to look stylish as you lose weight. I bought something from them for my sons wedding 8 years ago. Wide loose trousers in crepe, a top to match and a fine silk overshirt. Its timeless and still gets a regular airing.

sparklychair · 27/05/2025 00:03

Never tried them, but Wolf and Badger have some different stuff eg. https://www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/high-neck-sleeveless-dress-abstract-print-brown/

Or Karen Millen?

Quitelikeacatslife · 27/05/2025 00:35

Phase eight are good for formal dresses, go up to 22. Monsoon is still out there, online, half the stuff is odd, but half is nice. Scarlet and jo is good, they have some pretty things

JustAMum31 · 27/05/2025 00:41

@Mumwithbaggage Im also a 20-22 and usually buy occasion wear at Phase Eight, Monsoon or Next.

ryanne · 27/05/2025 00:44

Scarlett and Jo definitely. Lovely stuff and fit me at 5’10 20-22

salcombebabe · 27/05/2025 01:33

Definitely recommend Scarlett & Jo for tall women! Their sizing is good too

mumonthehill · 27/05/2025 06:14

Anthropologie does larger sizes and they do lovely dresses.

Rina66 · 27/05/2025 07:00

Abercrombie & Fitch also do a long length in their dresses

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/05/2025 07:27

Try the Facebook group 'pre-loved Long Tall Sally clothing' (any brand can be sold in there)

Yiayoula · 27/05/2025 07:38

Aspiga have some beautiful dresses .

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 27/05/2025 08:16

Phase Eight don’t have a dedicated tall range but they have a good range in plus size and I’ve done well there for occasion wear at 6’.

If you haven’t already, join the Tallternative Retail group on Facebook for lots of recommendations. You will be considered a ‘short tall’!
