I know it's my fault I'm fat but I'm working on it. I'm also tall - 5'10. I'm looking for a lovely outfit for my son's wedding but everything is awful. If I was just large or just tall I'd probably be OK but I'm stuck with polyester horror or dreadful old woman clothes or a few go to Boden dresses that are large enough and long enough.

Does anyone have recommendations for anywhere stylish for a tall size 20/22? Please don't say Chesca - I'm not in my 80s!

Thank you!

Have you been to a proper mother of the bride/groom type shop? If in the midlands try Jantino.

Mumwithbaggage · 27/05/2025 20:42

I'm in the far SE. It's not the size with MOB shops but the length and particularly anything with a waist is in the wrong place - had a look at a couple of shops locally. Jantino certainly has lots of lovely dresses!

@Arrestedforit I have a couple of Joanie dresses. Will have another look at the website.

With Joanie it’s generally worthwhile to sort from highest to lowest price.

How about a glamorous wide leg jump suit, styled in a seventies vibe? Blingy wedge sandals? Big sunglasses? Hair wings?

Next have some great plus size examples but jumpsuit legs have to be very long to be sufficiently stylish, so use their tall filter.

Good luck!

Rixo fits the floral and floaty bill, and has a good range of plus size. Not sure on length. their customer service is very good. Some above budget, but some items in budget.

Laura Adlington did a wedding guest dress series on insta recently. It sounds like she's a similar size and height to you too. Take a look, she dresses very well!

Papergirl1968 · 27/05/2025 22:11

Not sure of it’s already been suggested but have you looked at Needle and Thread? They have a wedding guest section but also lots of lovely floaty dresses in their normal dress section. Many of them mid calf, maxi, or ankle length. There’s a slight boho feel to them, they’re not too formal, but could be just right for a summer country wedding.

Mumwithbaggage · 27/05/2025 22:45

@Papergirl1968 not been mentioned yet. Thank you!

I've seen so many lovely dresses you've all pointed to, not necessarily for the wedding but it's going to cost me a fortune :)

@bettyjane my original thought was Rixo - they are indeed very long but when I bought a couple in the sale at Christmas I was disappointed with how see through they were so they went back.

I’ve got some dresses I love, and some i sent straight back so it can be a bit hit or miss, definitely easier if you can get yo a store to try on. I’ve found them very good for returns, but adds up quickly if you want to try a few things.

Mumwithbaggage · 27/05/2025 23:24

Maybe I need a trip to London... My favourites are navy with polka dots. I sent back one that was almost see through - very lovely though! I think I don't like to try things on in shops because I don't want to be disappointed. I do love the Rixo vibe!

I thought this style of dress may be good for you…not waisted, long, tummy covering, flattering neckline, long sleeves, floaty…

If you do get to London the kings road shop is the best I think, it seems to have the biggest range of extended sizes.

Mumwithbaggage · 28/05/2025 00:04

Thanks @bettyjane will go and look.

@Rina66 I've seen that dress in my searches! Where's it from? Would rather a bluey vibe but hey, ds said I can wear what I want... (I'm assuming he didn't mean my usual Converse and jeans 😂)

@Jakadaal lovely dress and I bet she looked fabulous but not the country vibe I'm after.

@Mumwithbaggage it’s New Look, here’s the link so you can see it on an actual body - it came in tall too, I’ve had it in my saved for later for ages! I just wonder if you could get something similar made? It would be beautiful in silk.

deeahgwitch · 28/05/2025 07:48

@MumwithbaggageYou could always buy a nude and/or white coloured slip - either a full length one or a half slip in M&S if you think something is too see through.
I find them very useful.

This is cotton, model is 5 10" and it's a lovely colour

Mumwithbaggage · 28/05/2025 09:06

@Rina66 thank you! I think it's even been in my basket at one point! New Look have some nice dresses at the moment - not for the wedding but there are plenty of other days I might need a dress!

OP posts:
Mumwithbaggage · 28/05/2025 09:09

I have a dress from Etsy arriving tomorrow so my fingers are firmly crossed that it's long enough...

@DrLucyVanPelt a very pretty dress and lovely colour but sadly I think it would make me look more washed out than I already am.

I'v realised I keep putting myself down in posts - I'm honestly not that awful looking that you'd run away from me in real life! Just want to be the best me I can be on the day so I can forget about my appearance and get on with enjoying the day.

I mentioned Aspiga upthread, and gave found some blue, floaty dresses that should fit the country wedding vibe . They’re all organic cotton apart from one satin one.
Hoping MN will let me attach pics as can’t go links. sorry !
