Style problems I hate.

I hate...shops that size their clothing 12/14 and 16/18.
The first is too small and the 2nd is massive.
Also one size fits all. I beg to differ, one size fits nobody.
Any pet hates?

Hate that, too! So annoying!

Also hate it when the same item in a different colour feels really different.

I have a bra I bought in both black and nude recently. The black one is really smooth and comfy, the nude one feels stiff and scratchy. Exact same bra, bought at same time. Same for some trousers I bought in black and navy. Navy ones feel thinner and don’t sit as well at the waist. Why?!

GotToWearShades · 23/05/2025 11:19

Definitely agree. Tights are a case in point for those who are tall or long limbed. One size utterly hopeless, M/L hit and miss, tall person tights hard to come by and often no use at all if you aren't very tall and/or a size 16 or over.

On the same line of thought, it's pretty much universal that brands do different leg lengths in trousers, why not different sleeve lengths though? Gloves have hand sizes but often the hand width and fingers are L but somehow they don't go up far enough at the wrist.

Disturbia81 · 23/05/2025 11:25

Yeah if they’re gonna do 2 sizes in one then they also need to do 14-16 etc

henlake7 · 23/05/2025 11:26

Agree about the different colours. I recently bought identical knicks in nude and black, they were essentially completely different sizes!
What annoys me though is necklines. I like to wear dresses and so many of the necklines seem designed to flash your bra. None of my bras are fit to be seen!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/05/2025 11:28

Women's jackets. I wear a jacket for the pockets so I don't need to take a bag. But I like an inside pocket so I can slip my phone in and keep it safe. SO MANY women's jackets don't have any kind of an inside pocket, or if they do it's a teeny tiny one for a little womanly hankie or a lipstick or something.

I've had to resort to stitching my own pockets on some jackets.

Oh, and necklines that look lovely until you bend forward and everything falls out.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/05/2025 11:33

Let us not forget plus size sleeves. When I was a size 20, I've since lost 5 stone, all sleeves in a size 20 become mysteriously very long.
They extend beyond the end of your fingers.
I was fat....I didn't suddenly grow gorilla length arms!!!

I hate how hard it is to get shoes with variable width. Dd is size 6 for length but very very narrow and she can only buy lace ups because it’s so hard to know which will be a narrow fitting shoe, she has to pull her shoes tight with laces.

School shoes have been a nightmare as all the trainer style shoes fit “standard” which is usually very wide. Even Clarkes and John Lewis said I didn’t have a hope of getting shoes that fit.

Argh.

Mikart · 23/05/2025 12:22

Shops that say a size 9 shoe is a 42. It really isnt

5128gap · 23/05/2025 12:28

The fool who decided that if you have a certain waist size then your hips will be no more than 8/10 inches larger.

Britpopbaby · 23/05/2025 12:36

Same size, different colour - different fit in terms of coming up big or small. Annoying especially when you take the tags off and expect it to fit.

Online price and on store price differing in the sales. Why?

Alpha sizing as mentioned above l

Are size guides a thing in shops and shouldn’t there be?

Friendsmilingwidely · 23/05/2025 12:40

One size socks. Men’s socks come in more than one size and many woman’s don’t. I’m a size 8 and have worn “men’s” socks for years

evilharpy · 23/05/2025 12:44

Jeans where the waistband gapes at the back because I dare to have both a waist and an arse at the same time.

Sandals where one of the straps is in exactly the right place to catch on my little toenail (Doc Martens Blaire is one particular offender).

theDudesmummy · 23/05/2025 12:44

Not for me but for my DS: he is nearly 16, the smallest men's trousers and shorts in many shops are just too big, and the the largest kids ones are just too small. I know the problem will resolve in time, and also you can get the right size (for him it is 15 years) in some places like Next online, but it does limit where we can shop and the choices.

theDudesmummy · 23/05/2025 12:46

Oh and yes, the 12/14 and 16/18 split is awful too.

MrsRhubarbBikini · 23/05/2025 12:50

Most dresses these days as the waistline comes up to my armpits. Who decided the waistline now needs to be higher? Can only really rely on shirt dresses where I can move the belt.

OurManyEnds · 23/05/2025 12:59

Every underwired bra I buy ends up making a squeaking sound when I move my arms 🙄

Tops that look lovely on the rack but 99% turn out to be crop tops.

I lost five stone and now my shoes are all a half size too big. Who knew shoes were designed by…weight.

This is such a common problem. I'm a podiatrist and there are precisely zero shops in my county that sell shoes for narrow feet. Wide shoes, huge shoes, no problem. Narrow sizes zilch. Not unless you want to spend hundreds of pounds from specialist catalogues.
It has been this way the whole time I've been qualified. 30 years.

I also have this shoe problem after a 5 stone weight loss.

Dresses that aren't actually dresses but jumpsuits, so many times I've looked at a lovely dress to find it's actually two legs instead of a skirt on the bottom.

Britpopbaby · 23/05/2025 13:15

Badly placed buttons in terms of not meeting the button holes causing gaping

henlake7 · 23/05/2025 13:20

The fact that most clothing measurements are still centred around a pear shaped body type when the average shape these days is actually a rectangle.
(especially those clothing companies who have such vast differences between waist and hips the only person they can be selling to is Jessica Rabbit!).

Yes! It always seem to be 12-14.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 23/05/2025 13:24

Who decided women's feet stop growing at size 8 or 42? Utterly ridiculous

Screamingabdabz · 23/05/2025 13:29

Brands that stock beautiful flattering clothes that only go up to a size 14…

Or just to taunt you they will have a ‘plus’ section with completely different clothes - usually dresses in ugly colours with high necks, huge breast pockets, no sleeves, heinous massive jungle prints and elasticated waists just to accentuate the worst features of a bigger woman.

Looking at you MANGO.

This drives me bonkers the so called waist on dresses sits under my boobs, my actual waist is a mile away, I don’t bother with waisted dresses at all as they are empire line in reality.
