Style problems I hate.

I hate...shops that size their clothing 12/14 and 16/18.
The first is too small and the 2nd is massive.
Also one size fits all. I beg to differ, one size fits nobody.
Any pet hates?

Shoes for my stupid feet which are different sizes. The only size I can wear to fit both feet is a 5.5 E and I have to get a cobbler to put put a block in the short foot shoe so its not slopping about. And naturally there is a big premium on half size wide fit shoes with the cobblers fees on top.
Sandals are OK as they are open at the end.
Thank goodness Amazon do a cheaper range of half sizes but they come from the US so take ages to arrive.

Yes same for me

my waist is lower and my legs aren’t that long

Same for me too. Waistlines end up under my boobs. it’s really not flattering. No room for boobs in so many dresses and tops either. It’s really annoying.

TealReader · 25/05/2025 08:20

That everything is made for an Apple/rectangle shape. I’ve got pronounced slightly bottom heavy hourglass and getting clothes which fit is a nightmare. Also foundations tend to be warm toned which look orange on my cool toned skin (even when they claim to be cool they often lean warm!). And the difficulty in getting white clothes right now- everything is cream or ecru!

myladyjane · 25/05/2025 09:12

I can’t ever find my body shape. It has many hallmarks of an hourglass - a lot of weight on my thighs/bum, a short, snatched in waist, shoulders same width as my curvy hips and a generous but not huge bust. Measurements wise I am perhaps slightly more pear shaped and I have heavy thighs (fat yes but also muscle). But I have a real stomach too. Always have had, not just post baby (although twin c section definitely didn’t improve it). But it’s all very much lower stomach - my actual waist comes in massively.

i am overweight and always have been but it’s quite a curvy overweight iyswim. I don’t fit the definition of an apple or a rectangle but if I follow hourglass suggestions they cling to my lower stomach. Trousers can be an utter nightmare as they cling to the tummy, don’t fit at the waist.

Oh and I’m short but my legs are not - I am 5’ 3 but can wear a regular length trouser most of the time. But regular jackets and coats always fit badly because the waist is in the wrong place but petite jackets/coats have sleeves which are too short.

basically I have got to the age of 50 without ever having clothes that fit. And yes I know I could have them altered but the addition cost and effort means I only do for special stuff.

i also actually think my figure isnt that unusual!

RampantIvy · 25/05/2025 09:53

Those are my issues too @TealReader

Hallywally · 25/05/2025 12:52

All the bloody tops are so short at the moment! I’m not huge- size 10/12 ish but I do carry weight around my stomach (sort of a pear shape) and I don’t want crop tops! I’m also mid 40s.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 25/05/2025 13:02

I personally don't think anyone looks good in crop tops. Even svelte model types. They're just an unflattering item of clothing.

Yes tops are too short with no tailoring

i mostly like my rear end covered

I totally agree with you. I’ve been overweight, underweight and everything in between and nothing has ever sat right. I’m tall but have short legs and a long body. My waist is there, but low, my boobs are big and my arms are short. My bum is neat my belly is soft.

I think I’m a hourglass but who knows? What I do know is that it’s getting harder and harder to get clothes that fit and look good! Clothes are so badly cut. No darts in blouses or tops. Waistlines too high. Sleeves too tight. I could go on.

IMHO There are a lot of women out there feeling bad about themselves when actually it’s the ill fitting clothes that make them look a lot worse than they actually are.

It drives me bonkers how people ohh and ahh about how amazing the royals and celebs look… yes! We’d all look good if our clothes were made to measure!

henlake7 · 25/05/2025 15:01

Im 5'5 and currently wearing a petite maxi skirt from New Look....
its ankle length! How does that make sense?

Very true. I’ve never worn them, even in my younger years!

Sewaccidentprone · 26/05/2025 13:00

Sleeveless tops which have deep armholes - I honestly don’t want to show my bra.

narrow width shoes as already stated - though tbh I find Ecco to be narrowish. I also love my narrow Birkenstocks - but apparently they’ve been taken over and the quality isn’t the same now.

i’ve come to realise my body just isn’t shaped for the majority of styles/clothes. This sounds really unattractive, but I have a short torso and waist (high waist trousers generally come to my bra, but long legs. My hips are also narrow, so trousers which fit the waist are huge on the hips.

My head is also on the small size, so most women’s hats are far too big.

how can one size fit all that - lol

Petite clothes that are made for people of 5'4" ....which isn't especially short...

What are us actual short arses
meant meant to wear?

I've noticed this recently. I'm 5'4" and it's only in the last 5 years I've had to start buying trousers from the petite section. For years standard length was just fine for my height. Now standard length seems to mean about 5'8" in many shops.

EcruCardigan · 26/05/2025 13:55

There was a phase in the 1990s or 2000s when heels were everywhere and trousers were long. More recently it has been ankle grazers and flat shoes.

Petite doesn't fit me. I'm 5'4".

Gettingbysomehow · 26/05/2025 15:26

Models, please get up off the floor, don't curl up on chairs in ridiculous positions and untuck that top.
I want to see the clothes properly not you hiding them in complicated yoga poses and I also need to see how long those tops are.
M and S are the worst culprits and please tell us how tall the model is.

And don’t say “model is wearing size 8” when the garment comes in XS S M L XL, etc.

💯agree

It has become utterly daft on some clothing websites.

“The model is wearing size whatever” okay, but what are the model’s measurements?! If she’s 5’10 looking perfect in size 8 trousers, 5’3 me wants to know!

MabelMoo23 · 26/05/2025 20:40

Oh my god - so many of these!!

despise dual sizing. It’s just lazy cheap manufacturing. I’m a solid size 14 but I’m closer to a 16 rather than a 12, so 12-14 too small, but 16-18 insanely big on me.

also yes to so many shoes being cheap plastic

mdinbc · 26/05/2025 21:47

Yes to the weird model poses. I want to see the garment front and back, untucked if it is a top, so I can gauge the length. Bonus points if the measurements are included in the description. Sezane are notoriously bad for slumping models.

Lack of swimsuits in long torso sizes. If I grab a one-piece in my size, I can't even get my breasts covered.
Lack of tankini swimsuits in nice styles. I think companies are assuming you go from teeny triangle bikini to full on corseted woman in aquafit class.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 26/05/2025 22:57

If clothes were really made for apple shapes, they'd know apples generally have slim legs and (as an apple) I'd be able to find a pair of trousers that don't look like jodhpurs on me.

Not much better for us pears. Waists massive and skin tight over the bum so you can't walk properly 😂thank God for elastication.

OP posts:
nex18 · 26/05/2025 23:39

Definitely the dual sizing, no matter what size I have been spanning a couple of sizes is never going to fit.
I’m a typical pear shape, I have a waist and I have a bum, all trousers and jeans have a 6 inch gape at the back of my waist.
Websites suggesting “comes up small, order a size up” or vice versa, no, just make it the right size!
