Style problems I hate.

I hate...shops that size their clothing 12/14 and 16/18.
The first is too small and the 2nd is massive.
Also one size fits all. I beg to differ, one size fits nobody.
Any pet hates?

Jean sizes. They appear to have no correlation to any measurements on my body.
I wear a 25 or 26. My waist is 27/28

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2025 10:32

Summer dresses all seem to have shirred backs and tiered skirts - terrible and cheap looking.

Cheap or odd looking buttons. I regularly replace buttons.

RampantIvy · 24/05/2025 10:46

"Maxi" dresses that aren't maxi. I am 5'7" , so not excessively tall. I am looking for a casual maxi to throw on after a shower in the evening, but all the ones I see online are actually midi. They are midi on the models and would be midi on me.

EcruCardigan · 24/05/2025 10:48

@RampantIvy , that's a good point. They don't seem to know what midi, midaxi (Hmm) or maxi mean.

This is such a common problem. I'm a podiatrist and there are precisely zero shops in my county that sell shoes for narrow feet. Wide shoes, huge shoes, no problem. Narrow sizes zilch. Not unless you want to spend hundreds of pounds from specialist catalogues.
It has been this way the whole time I've been qualified. 30 years.

But the wide fitting shoes assume your feet are wide all over, whereas for many people it's the toe area that needs to be wider, not the whole foot.

That is my problem. Most slip on shoes are like flip flops on my feet.

Waistlines on dresses .I'm tall at 5 ft 10 that makes it almost a certainty that my body is also longer then someone 5ft 2 .Please make tops and the waist lines of dresses lower and maybe also a bit of room for boobs .So sick of waistlines being under my boobs .

Not really true. I'm 5'2 and a half, but sitting down, we'd look the same. I just have short legs.

I can't wear shoes that can slide off. I always need a strap at the back too. I'm always surprised by people wearing sandals with no back strap and they look dangerous to me.

If you have lost 5 stone then your size 20 clothes will obviously be too big for you so of course the sleeves will be too long.

the fabric would have been pushed outwards by the fat across your back and front abd top of your shoulders and arms and pulled the sleeves up. Now they will be baggy and the sleeves will be too long. This is not a mystery

She said this was happening BEFORE she lost the weight.

I think it still makes sense though because sizes are not just about how thin or fat you are, but also height and a taller woman might have longer arms.

ForPearlViper · 24/05/2025 11:15

EcruCardigan · 23/05/2025 22:28

I find shoe sizing to be quite arbitrary.

The translation between European sizings and UK can be very random, particularly above a size 6 and with trainers. It varies from brand to brand but online retailers will use their own standard when listing the shoe so you don't know what you're getting even if you think you're ordering the right European size. I've had issues so many times I now check the sizing of the brand in-store. If you are buying in-store always go by your European size checked inside the shoe as a starting point. Don't believe the size labels on shelves.

RampantIvy · 24/05/2025 11:18

You are right @ForPearlViper
DH takes a size 10 in footwear which is really a 44.5, but many shoe shops state that a 10 is size 44 which is too small.

I've never had a fat back or stomach, all my excess weight was on my lower half. That's probably why the sleeves were too long. Most plus size shops only cater for one shape, the big boobs and stomach with thinner legs. Pears can apparently go naked.

New look has models of 5'5" modelling their petite range!!
So there's no hope of some of the things fitting if you're 5ft or under!

Im 5'5 and I often buy things from the petite ranges just so Im not tripping over in them!
Its about time clothing companies realiesed we want things to be average for a normal woman not average for a model!

Annoys me when they try and make things look 'posh' by adding 10-20% wool. Why!? Its not going to make much difference to the garment, just means if you are vegan or allergic you now cant wear that item...all because of a piddly little bit of wool.🙄

EcruCardigan · 24/05/2025 12:20

@ForPearlViper, I don't believe the size labels on shelves.
The shoes either fit or they don't. I can be anything from a 3.5 to a 6. I'm usually a 5.

Petite clothes that are made for people of 5'4" ....which isn't especially short...

What are us actual short arses
meant meant to wear?

My mum gets 25” trousers from Bon Marche - but as she is 77 I don’t know if they would be your style!

tobee · 24/05/2025 14:44

On sizing:

XL, S, M, L, XL with little indication what this means. Sometimes there's a chart to refer to but often generic and nothing to do with letters.

Looking at jeans of different brands and jumps from 8, 10, 12 etc to inches. I wish it would be a universal thing or a conversion (that worked). There’s good & bad about both methods but I wish brands would stick to one!

I hate that Manufacturers can’t seem to fathom that women can have big boobs and not measure 38+ around the band. Trying to get a comfortable bra in my size is difficult. Getting a non-wired bralette is impossible. I need a 32H. You’d think I was asking for the moon on a stick!

I have no idea who they are maxi for. I’m 5’3” and they are dragging on the floor.

maybe only people who are 5’5”. No taller. No shorter!

Yes same for me

my waist is lower and my legs aren’t that long

I used to find M &S stores good for small band big cup bras. Not bought any for a while though. They weren' the prettiest, but at least they weren't flimsy.

If you find a bralette that actually has decent support and doesn't have those foam things in, please share.

I know MN disapproves of M and S bra fittings, I took DD there, she is about size 6 but with a 30E bust. The woman that measured her couldn't find anything suitable and suggested she ate more to put some weight on, so there would be something that fitted! Confused (She is not underweight)

MidnightPatrol · 24/05/2025 20:55

Sleeves are often slightly too short, and this is compounded by (even if baggy floaty sleeves) having a tight cuff of some sort.

Which means about half the tops I buy end up feeling slightly restrictive.

Paljmens · 24/05/2025 20:59

Tops that are too short. Went round the shops recently, virtually no tops cover your waist. I don't want my navel out.

Lotsofsnacks · 24/05/2025 21:42

Agree it’s hard to clothe a pear shaped body. Not that i wear them these days; but bikini shopping was hard, as they often came as a set, and you couldn’t buy separates, and then the tops were too big, and the bottoms too tight. And if there were separates available, it was always in the boring styles, not the cool ones
