Style problems I hate.

I hate...shops that size their clothing 12/14 and 16/18.
The first is too small and the 2nd is massive.
Also one size fits all. I beg to differ, one size fits nobody.
Any pet hates?

Elasticated waists on everything and 1-2% elastane in everything to reduce online returns.

Filters that don't differentiate between cotton fabric and cotton jersey. At least I’m getting better at spotting the jersey items when I see the photo…

Viscose trousers, skirts and dresses. Hangs like a limp dishrag, no structure whatsoever.

Deep v-necks that reveal my nipples. Forgiveable on styles that particularly suit larger breasted women, but not on shift dresses with spaghetti straps.

Women’s shirts, knitwear and fleeces/hoodies ALWAYS being thinner than the male equivalent. Why? I’ve yet to meet a bloke who feels the cold like I do.

The ‘shrink and pink’ phenomenon in running shoes. Women's feet are a different shape and we’re generally lighter and less powerful, but usually there are only aesthetic difference between male and female versions.

Not just nipples but crinkly chests like mine from too much sunbathing when young. I need a highish neckline that doesn't yawn open when I bend over.

Petite clothes that are made for people of 5'4" ....which isn't especially short...

What are us actual short arses
meant meant to wear?

OublietteBravo · 23/05/2025 18:18

All jeans/trousers being high rise. Some mid rise ones appear to be higher rise than high rise ones. Also long trousers being higher rise than regular length. I have a short torso and long legs. I don’t actually want the waistband to be 1” off my bra - it’s incredibly uncomfortable.

Agree on arm length. Although for me it’s rare that they’re long enough. I’d like to be able to buy long sleeve lengths in size 8 tops. All my favourite jumpers are from the men’s section for this reason, but that doesn’t work for blouses.

How much longer do we have before everything finally stops having puffy sleeves, frills, and stupid high necks. Sometimes all in the same garment?

Why can’t you filter dresses by whether or not they have a belt/waist tie when you’re shopping online? I can’t wear anything that does (short torso - see above), but it’s incredibly hard to filter them out.

Also, if you’re selling footwear, then I want to see a picture of someone wearing it. I want to see where the straps lie for sandals, and how wide the boots are around the calf.

EcruCardigan · 23/05/2025 18:27

@catsmother , they seem to be sold as separates wherever I shop.
M andS does the tops by bra size as does Tu.Buy Black Moulded Balcony Bikini Top 34C | Bikinis and tankinis | Tu

@Fizbosshoes 5'4" is taller than the national average height for women (just). Who sells petite for 5'4"?

New look has models of 5'5" modelling their petite range!!
So there's no hope of some of the things fitting if you're 5ft or under!

TheOGCCL · 23/05/2025 19:41

I mean don’t get me started.

Agree with @OhBow that all the shops have merged into one. Prices picked at random.

Its trouser and jeans rises for me though, it’s all so high and although it’s quite flattering on me with a long torso and short legs it’s uncomfortable. I would love online stores to list the rise measurement.

But stores can’t even be bothered to list the length half the time. That’s not an insignificant piece of information.

Shops sell wide fit shoes but never narrow, why can’t we have equality.

Choosechoclate · 23/05/2025 20:36

Misshapen clothing. I have my eye on a vest top in M&S. I’m waiting for one with armholes that are same on both sides, same coverage under, in front and behind arms. The material is quality, thick cotton. I can’t put up with odd armholes though.

Same goes for the jeans. Can’t put up with one leg longer, wider, one front pocket closer to the front button, small and too high back pockets. Ruins the shape, looks cheap. Saves me a fortune!

Synthetic material. Pointless, especially in summer!

Sandals advertised as leather, but the footbed, most important for comfort, is plastic. Pointless, I can’t be doing with hot sweaty feet sliding around on plastic.

This is such a common problem. I'm a podiatrist and there are precisely zero shops in my county that sell shoes for narrow feet. Wide shoes, huge shoes, no problem. Narrow sizes zilch. Not unless you want to spend hundreds of pounds from specialist catalogues.
It has been this way the whole time I've been qualified. 30 years.

My mother always referred to narrow feet as "an expensive foot"...she was right!

She certainly was.

hotter made some for a while then stopped which was so frustrating

Choosechoclate · 23/05/2025 20:57

Very difficult to find shoes & boots that are curved at the back to cup heels, hold feet in place. They’re cut in a straight line at the back nowadays which doesn’t give any support.

prelovedusername · 23/05/2025 21:15

Ankle straps where the buckle is JUST below the ankle bone and catches with every step.

Shoes that fitted perfectly in the shop but pinch at home.

Shoes that develop a squeak just as the return period runs out.

Anyone see a theme here?

Shops that say a size 9 shoe is a 42. It really isnt

Agreed!

Yes the squeaky shoes

Shops where the Petite range is all stereotypically feminine stuff (flowers, pink, lace), and the Tall range is more androgynous (dark, bold stripes). Why not just sell the same items in different size ranges? I’m tall but like more “feminine” clothes; I’m sure lots of petite women would like more neutral/androgenous clothes. Tall women are not men and shorter women are not tiny fairies.

Yes! I’m petite and often look for the lovely midi and maxi dresses in the standard length in petite size, only to find weird body con / lace up, stretchy things. And jeggings.

Also agree on the split sizes thing. I’m pretty much an 11, so neither 8-10 nor 12-14 are going to work for me.

JohnTheRevelator · 23/05/2025 22:21

Oh tell me about it. I bloody hate dual sizing.

EcruCardigan · 23/05/2025 22:28

I find shoe sizing to be quite arbitrary.

TeaAndToast8 · 23/05/2025 22:30

I’m on the taller side and Shapewear bodysuits are ridiculous.. Digging into my vag all day. A lot of bodysuits and playsuits are the same.

OurManyEnds · 23/05/2025 12:59

Every underwired bra I buy ends up making a squeaking sound when I move my arms 🙄

Tops that look lovely on the rack but 99% turn out to be crop tops.

I lost five stone and now my shoes are all a half size too big. Who knew shoes were designed by…weight.

Squeaky bras. I've got two lovely ones that I can't bear to get rid of but can't wear because ni ni ni ni (sound of squeaky bra)

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 23/05/2025 22:43

Not stocking sizes 6-10 in the store anymore, size 8 shirts that fit a size 4-6 bust, high-rise trousers as the only option, poor quality materials.

RampantIvy · 23/05/2025 22:43

I could have written your post. I so agree with you.

@5128gap I never rely on waist sizes for buying jeans. I have a 12 inch difference between my hips and waist.

@catsmother I agree with you on supermarkets getting rid of changing rooms. My nearest Sainsbury's is an hour's round trip. It used to be my go to for the best supermarket clothes. I don't shop there at all any more.

Wide necks on tops. I'm looking at you White Stuff. I have a skinny neck and bony shoulders. Wide boat necks don't suit me.

KettleOn919 · 24/05/2025 03:05

Shoes not coming in half sizes in most shops anymore. One size pinches your toes and the next size are like boats. Then to add insult to injury the shop assistant suggests you buy the boats and then spend another twelve quid on a selection of insoles and heel grips to pad them out.

MontysMum909 · 24/05/2025 08:16

Haviana flip flops that are either size 3-4 or 5-6 gggrrrrrrrrr

Absolutely this.

Let us not forget plus size sleeves. When I was a size 20, I've since lost 5 stone, all sleeves in a size 20 become mysteriously very long.
They extend beyond the end of your fingers.
I was fat....I didn't suddenly grow gorilla length arms!!!

If you have lost 5 stone then your size 20 clothes will obviously be too big for you so of course the sleeves will be too long.

the fabric would have been pushed outwards by the fat across your back and front abd top of your shoulders and arms and pulled the sleeves up. Now they will be baggy and the sleeves will be too long. This is not a mystery
