Style problems I hate.

I hate...shops that size their clothing 12/14 and 16/18.
The first is too small and the 2nd is massive.
Also one size fits all. I beg to differ, one size fits nobody.
Any pet hates?

The fact that most clothing measurements are still centred around a pear shaped body type when the average shape these days is actually a rectangle.
(especially those clothing companies who have such vast differences between waist and hips the only person they can be selling to is Jessica Rabbit!).

I disagree with this, most clothes particularly trousers or jeans are massive on the waist and tight on the hips, clothes these days are perfect for rectangle body shapes as there is no tailoring at all, everything is cut in either a square or a rectangle shape because they are cheap to manufacture, t shirts are all square, none go in at the waist and I can’t remember the last time a I saw a shirt or blouse with actual darts.

IchBinPapst · 23/05/2025 13:37

The 12/14 and 16/18 split is the worst. Inevitably the first one is a 12 and the second is an 18.

I also hate it when you think you’ve found a lovely dress or top and it turns out to be backless, have cutouts in the side panels, or a V neck that goes all the way to the waistband.

MoreThanRubies · 23/05/2025 13:38

Shops where the Petite range is all stereotypically feminine stuff (flowers, pink, lace), and the Tall range is more androgynous (dark, bold stripes). Why not just sell the same items in different size ranges? I’m tall but like more “feminine” clothes; I’m sure lots of petite women would like more neutral/androgenous clothes. Tall women are not men and shorter women are not tiny fairies.

henlake7 · 23/05/2025 13:39

I get annoyed by seeing something that looks perfect but turns out to be made of polyester.
Nothing againest manmade fabrics but polyester can do one.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 23/05/2025 13:46

Consistency in sizing within the shop! I don’t mind that I have clothes in 3 different dress sizes in my wardrobe all from different shops who have decided this size waist makes a different dress sizes. I am fine knowing that in Boden I pick up one size and one two sizes higher in New Look (and they’ll both fit)

I do mind when I take two pairs of trousers into the changing room which are officially the same size and they have significantly different waist sizes. Yes M&S I’m talking about you. (Don’t get me started on M&S’s inability to decide what inside leg they are calling “short” pick a number of inches and then make all the short trousers this length.)

Brands that stock beautiful flattering clothes that only go up to a size 14…

Or just to taunt you they will have a ‘plus’ section with completely different clothes - usually dresses in ugly colours with high necks, huge breast pockets, no sleeves, heinous massive jungle prints and elasticated waists just to accentuate the worst features of a bigger woman.

Looking at you MANGO.

Well said. Also Reiss, Karen Millen and many others. I always feel offended!

Yes. I don’t have much of a waist any more but I’m certainly not a rectangle! I’m what another poster in S&B recently described as ‘short and stout’.

All these clothes just made of square panels make me look much larger than I am. I’m actually a pretty standard 12 but wearing modern clothes that ‘fit’ me look more like an 18. I don’t like ‘stretch’ clothes.

theDudesmummy · 23/05/2025 13:51

Not a complaint at all, but ah yes the shoe size! I have only lost 2 stone but I have gone down by one to one and a half shoe sizes! (unexpected!)

Catwoman8 · 23/05/2025 13:52

Yes I hate this, if anything I'd be a 10/12, but it's never that it's always 8-10 or 12-14 and neither is quite right. Same with Xs, S, M etc.

When ordering online , I look at measurements now and order what looks best, regardless if it's a L or S etc.

theDudesmummy · 23/05/2025 13:56

Oh and also, looking for beach cover-ups/dresses for holiday that are made of the type of fabric that will dry quickly when it gets wet, so if you swim you can then put them back on, not have to first sit around in your swimsuit until it is dry. e.g. something chiffon-y etc. These are very few and far between. Also, beach-cover ups and holiday dresses that are not either way too short for an old lady like me, or else long-sleeved and maxi, so much too hot for a hot country. Again, not easy to find.

Yes, yes and yes!

EcruCardigan · 23/05/2025 14:09

Let us not forget plus size sleeves. It's because an overweight torso tends to be big but the shoulders not. The garment will have the shoulders in proportion to the bust.

EcruCardigan · 23/05/2025 14:11

Teeny pockets in jeans, so you can't get a phone or a wallet in them.
Levi's are ruined by them, so check before you buy.

theDudesmummy · 23/05/2025 14:13

Hoodies with pockets that are slanted and just too shallow so your phone falls out of them.

Phphion · 23/05/2025 14:16

Massive armholes that show off your bra unless you keep your arms welded to your sides at all times.

schnubbins · 23/05/2025 14:17

Waistlines on dresses .I'm tall at 5 ft 10 that makes it almost a certainty that my body is also longer then someone 5ft 2 .Please make tops and the waist lines of dresses lower and maybe also a bit of room for boobs .So sick of waistlines being under my boobs .

OurManyEnds · 23/05/2025 14:19

Yes, those high waistlines suit precisely nobody. I wonder why so many things are made that way?

Sorry I love the high waistlines!
My ribcage is the thinnest part of my middle so Im more then happy to have things looser when it gets to the wobbly bits!😄

OurManyEnds · 23/05/2025 14:47

Oh fair enough 😁 They sit right under my (huge) boobs and don’t come anywhere near my waist. I’m quite longwaisted and have a nice shape (thanks liposuction 🤣) and I’ll be damned if I hide it.

evtheria · 23/05/2025 14:52

• clothes no longer having a spare button sewn to the laundry label

I hate how hard it is to get shoes with variable width. Dd is size 6 for length but very very narrow and she can only buy lace ups because it’s so hard to know which will be a narrow fitting shoe, she has to pull her shoes tight with laces.

School shoes have been a nightmare as all the trainer style shoes fit “standard” which is usually very wide. Even Clarkes and John Lewis said I didn’t have a hope of getting shoes that fit.

Argh.

Yes agree, I have narrow feet too as does most of women in my family

why is standard width now a D and everything is so wide

suburburban · 23/05/2025 14:56

MrsRhubarbBikini · 23/05/2025 12:50

Most dresses these days as the waistline comes up to my armpits. Who decided the waistline now needs to be higher? Can only really rely on shirt dresses where I can move the belt.

Yes the waists are ridiculously high, why?

ghostyslovesheets · 23/05/2025 14:58

H+M etc who size 8-10 then 12-14 I’m an 11! Pisses me off.

and, I’ve ranted before but petite women are short - a 10 petite should measure the same as regular but with shorter legs - honestly Next especially - normal size is a bit big petite version won’t fasten!

Dollyparot200 · 23/05/2025 15:00

I wish when buying online that descriptions of the dress im looking at were more descriptive. Im looking for a true wrap dress and ive found this so hard alot are fake wrap dresses and I want to be able to adjust it. Unfortunately where I live the shops have gone so im unable to pop out and try before I buy

tigerbear · 23/05/2025 15:05

That most Petite ranges seem to either focus on horrible polyester 'work wear' or really casual stuff like vest tops and jeans - nothing actually nice or interesting, or in decent fabrics.
