Is this nice, or tacky?

I can’t decide. I sort of love it, but also think it looks like something a toddler would wear. I’m 45.

I have had a couple of things from Joe Browns and the quality is not good. The last thing I bought was a black velvet waistcoat and it was horrible, the so called velvet was like cardboard and thin cardboard at that, sent it straight back and not bought anything since

That's a shame. I'm wearing a vintage Joe Browns skirt today (no idea how old it is) & it's gorgeous: a Monsoon-type flurry of coordinating fabrics with a lot of work in it, all made of lightweight cotton.

Haven't RTFT but OP, has anyone mentioned Jess de Wahls?

You could buy some of her floral patches & add them to anything, if that's the style you fancy.

I think it’s gorgeous and would definitely wear it

All of Joe Browns is very dated and Granny vibes

I'm tempted to order something just on the back of this post.

Mumwithbaggage · 13/05/2025 20:05

Looks like it's trying to be edgy but has missed the mark.

I'm late 30s and I like it and wear similar (but vintage ones from the 80s/90s), I get lots of compliments on them.

Then again I don't have the typical 'mumsnet' style (most the things posted on here I would never wear in a million years) so if I like it I assume many hear will announce that it 'awful' with some unnecessary put down to make you feel bad for stepping out of the middle class norm.

Regardless of my (or anyones) opinion though life is really far too short to care if a judgemental person who isn't comfortable in themselves wants to poke fun at the fact you can be yourself and wear something more 'colourful' (although honestly it virtually never happens). If YOU like it then get it and rock it.

Huh?

I don’t like it - not because I’m “middle class”. I would never spend £100 on a new denim jacket that you can get much cheaper second hand and it’d be done way nicer. It’s obviously vintage inspired but done in a very tacky way. And for £100 to boot. It’s nothing to do with not liking colourful clothes either. The concept is fine, it’s just not done very well.

i bloody love it :) kinda has like a thai festival feel to it why not try it if you dont like it send it back :) age has no limits Happy shopping

Xwx1010 · 13/05/2025 22:04

I think you’d get a much nicer embroidered similar jacket elsewhere, the quality is off on this for £100 - however echo other posters in terms of all that really matters is if you like it!

Happyearlyretirement · 13/05/2025 22:53

Love it, now I want it🤣

Flyswats · 14/05/2025 02:35

I wish it stimulated some kind of extreme reaction from me, but it doesn't really.

Bulldog01 · 14/05/2025 10:35

Sorry, plain well cut Jean Jacket's look so much better, this looks like someone is trying too hard.Looking good should look effortless!

Grammarnut · 14/05/2025 12:29

I love it. If you like it wear it. Not tacky and not out of fashion - and who cares if it's in fashion or not, the only thing that matters is if it suits you.

Me too! I have some nice Joe Brown boots, with ribbons.

Only if you are Beau Brummell and we know what happened to him. (If not, he died in poverty in a very boring bit of France.)

BorntoDillyDally · 14/05/2025 12:56

I've been eyeing this up for a while, I personally think its lovely.

Nichebitch · 14/05/2025 14:50

Very much depends on the whole look - if you’re going to style it as in the picture, huge no. Those trousers bring it right down. You can change the vibe! I personally love it but I would wear it differently

exaltedwombat · 14/05/2025 21:02

Just about OK if you're petite. But yes, it's channelling your inner pre-teen!

Hocuspoc · 14/05/2025 21:52

Depends on your body build, style and vibe tbh.

I have a friend in mind, petite, skinny, bold haircut, piercings, wears loud colors, heels. If she was the one wearing this, literally with black leggings and tight black top - this jacket looks amazing!!!

Another friend in mind, quiet, shy, always the same shoulder length hair, undyed, not styled, minimal jewellery, dull colored clothes (brown, navy, black combos), shapeless clothes. If she was the one wearing this it would look 'try hard', out of place and yes even childish...

The jacket is actually pretty great, a lot of potential :) The vibe depends on the owner!

UseNailOil · 14/05/2025 21:55

I think it’s really random.
But if it’s a bit of you, go for it.

Bowies · 14/05/2025 23:56

londongirl12 · 11/05/2025 17:09

I don’t personally like it, but if you like it that’s all that matters 😃

agreed - and it’s the fussiness of it I don’t like, wouldn’t think of toddlers at all if you hadn’t mentioned them.

EconomyClassRockstar · 15/05/2025 01:14

I tried this on today and I really liked it. And then I tried to imagine where I'd actually wear it outside of a pre school and it was a no.

I see that as a festival or concert jacket.

librathroughandthrough · 15/05/2025 07:58

Awful

lilacmamacat · 15/05/2025 13:00

Depends entirely on what else you'd wear it with. I think it could be difficult to style without you ending up looking like the kind of woman who's in her 70s and wears gold wedge trainers.

Hollieandtheivie · 15/05/2025 14:26

Is wearing gold wedge trainers in your 70s a bad thing? That sort of woman sounds like she's great fun. 😆 I could only wish to be a woman like that...

LurcherMumma · 15/05/2025 18:38

Unhelpful but I do really really like it AND I have made my toddler something not too dissimilar 😅
