Is this nice, or tacky?

I can’t decide. I sort of love it, but also think it looks like something a toddler would wear. I’m 45.

I looked at this too and I’m 50 and I always buy these embroidered denim jackets.
It’s nice but I it pricey. Also superdry has similar for a same price but I like that one better.

NotMeNoNo · 12/05/2025 10:30

It’s a certain look, not particularly current, more timeless, quite boho, very typical Joe Browns. I can imagine people who like that look might wear it at any age and probably have big rambling wardrobes of their eclectic arty clothes. I think I might get bored wearing something like that too frequently, it wouldn’t be an everyday jacket.

BarneyRonson · 12/05/2025 10:39

It’s dated, but that’s quite a good thing. You could definitely own it, no need to look toddlerish unless you ant to. It’s jolly, and we need jolly!

Lobelia123 · 12/05/2025 10:47

Just remember peoples opinions are always informed by their own style.
So asking this question to the hive you may get a NO from a very conservative dresser or a casual dresser or a budget dresser! And a YES from a younger dresser, a more uninhibited dresser, or an urban dresser.....or whatever. I personally think its great and I would wear it. Just have fun and enjoy fashion, its not supposed to be deadly serious x

Jewel52 · 12/05/2025 11:00

Just showed this to my 22 year old who described it as “something an old person would wear and think they looked funky!”

I thInk Joe Browns is a very “young” label tbh…and I say that as a 57 year old!

Most definitely not a “young” label. Most of the stuff is very dated. Quirky/kooky - sure.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 12/05/2025 13:27

DH and I both bought quite a few ‘quirky’ things from Joe Brown’s, we were really keen to get something a bit different.

The quality of all of them was really poor. None of them are still with us after three years ( and we have clothes from thirty years ago in use) .

That's us told then! Can't imagine there are many 22 year olds coming to MN for style advice.

Onedayatatime9 · 12/05/2025 13:38

I think it's a lovely fun Summer jacket.

FWIW I don't think age has anything to do with it if it suits you.

I've got one like the customised embellished one. I upcycled it myself from a vintage 1978 Wrangler jacket. The jacket is older than I am.

Azureshores · 12/05/2025 14:24

I can't stand anything from joe browns - they often post a catalogue and dh and I always have a good laugh over it. That jacket isnt quite as bad as some of the stuff they sell. Sorry.

ItGhoul · 12/05/2025 14:50

I don't think it's tacky at all.

I don't like it, but that's just a matter of personal taste - I don't like Joe Brown's stuff at all, because it tends to have a lot of details and embellishments and bright colours which isn't my style. Unlike some PPs I don't even think it's 'out there' - while the jacket isn't my thing, I doubt I'd even really notice it on someone else.

Sleepybear1234 · 12/05/2025 16:06

I have been looking at this jacket for weeks and couldn't decide x I think it's lovely

SpidersAreShitheads · 12/05/2025 16:47

I'm 49 and I really like it. But my dress sense has always veered to slightly boho with big colours and patterns. I don't find that I agree with a lot of the opinions on here as recommendations tend to be a bit conservative and/or plain for my tastes.

I'm OK with looking like a toddler. I'm also OK if a 22 year old wants to scoff 😂

I think it's a shame that as you get older, wanting to enjoy colour and/or brighter clothing is viewed as "dressing like a child" or "not suitable for your age". Honestly, balls to all of that.

Wear what you love.

I've only ever bought a couple of bits from Joe Brown's, but I do like their style. Same as you though, the quality was really poor and I wasn't impressed. Shame.

Eminybob · 12/05/2025 17:55

Some very mixed opinions.
I think the price point is off. It it was cheaper I would probably go for it, but £100 is a lot for a denim jacket.

Um, it’s a no from me.

Allseeingallknowing · 12/05/2025 18:39

Jo Brown’s clothes come up small !

You can love colour and bright patterns without resorting to Joe Browns!! There are so many brands out there - Farm Rio, Stine Goya, Lucy and Yak, Joanie - look for some vintage pieces, and loads available on Vinted.

OK for age twenty something, over thirty not so much unless they are very into statement dressing

But a 20 year old wouldn't be seen dead in that! Of course denim jackets are still in style. But not like that one.
Joe Brown is so dated. It's for people in their 50s who grew up in a small town and thought they were alternative/cool when they were in their teens and 20s (30 years ago).

Mrsgreen100 · 12/05/2025 21:13

Under 30,s
cool , but mutton and lamb situ possibly

GloriousBlue · 12/05/2025 21:18

I like the colours but just feel it does not look classy - sorry

I think this is a bit mean.

PS: I saw The Pogues last week - amazing!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2025 21:21

I used to have a lovely embroidered denim jacket. I'd wear one again if I found a nice one (I'm in my 50s and grew up in a small town and used to think I was cool) but this one is too bright and 'busy' for me.

mdinbc · 12/05/2025 21:41

Have you considered getting a custom jacket done? Get a fairly traditional jean jacket (Levis trucker), and get an embroidery or applique done. Check your nearby seamstresses or facebook groups, or etsy.
