Is this nice, or tacky?

I can’t decide. I sort of love it, but also think it looks like something a toddler would wear. I’m 45.

I think you should listen to your own instincts on this one… why are you hesitating ? Is it the cost ? I’m very much a Cos woman so this is very much not my taste but is it your taste? Why do other peoples opinions matter?

@Eminybob i like it

lifeonmars100 · 12/05/2025 22:56

I have had a couple of things from Joe Browns and the quality is not good. The last thing I bought was a black velvet waistcoat and it was horrible, the so called velvet was like cardboard and thin cardboard at that, sent it straight back and not bought anything since

abracadabra1980 · 12/05/2025 23:55

Sorry OP, it's a no from me. Dated.

TheMVPSTurningmyheartbeatup · 13/05/2025 00:16

Looks like something Beverley Goldberg would make.
The Goldberg's..US comedy.

Sunnyevenings · 13/05/2025 01:20

I don't like Joe Browns at all. I'm not a fan of the jacket but I see why someone would like it. I'd prefer it with a dark washed out band logo on the back as the JB one is garish for me but if you like it and it would make you feel good, then definitely buy it. We should enjoy our clothes....

DreamTheMoors · 13/05/2025 01:54

I really like the cut of the jacket. And I really like the design, too - but I wonder how many uses you’ll get out of it before people start saying “Oh sheezus not that thing again.” lol
If it were me I’d get it.
But I’m the you only live once kinda gal.

DirtyBird · 13/05/2025 02:05

I love it! I had a similar one back in the early 90s ☺️

FagsMagsandBags · 13/05/2025 03:10

I like it although the front is very boring and could do with even a hint of embroidery to suggest the back. But I'm with others, go to Vinted and you might even find something a bit better from when these were much more in style - I'm not saying it's old-fashioned, I bought a ridiculously "how are they that cheap" cheap pair of second hand Maharish snopants last week which are all about my lust for them in the 90s. And the price. If you find jackets like it, they'll be worn in and soft, better quality if it's old because quality control is worsening not getting better over the years and a bit less dull at the front.

I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's neither tacky nor toddler, and if it's the latter to some people then they have cool toddlers running around with little dragon jackets.

MayaPinion · 13/05/2025 04:50

I love this. It depends on whether you can carry it off or not. If your normal style is Bon Marché capri pants and a stripey t shirt, or a Hobbs pencil dress, this is not for you. If you are in your band T shirt and biker boots era, or have that perfect summer floaty dress and a pair DM platform sandals, then it would look amazing. My niece is a talented artist and will occasionally pick up a denim jacket in a charity shop for £5-£10 and paint the back of it as a gift for a friend or family member, so if you like the style and know someone who is good at that sort of thing you could go down that route.

LillyPJ · 13/05/2025 06:59

To my mind it's tacky- but I know nothing about fashion! If you love it, buy it.

UpMyself · 13/05/2025 08:36

@MayaPinion , All good and well, but OP would need to source the jacket, recruit an artistic friend or relative, and reimburse them for the paint and their time. Smile

We used to do this back in the 1980s. A friend's partner was artistic and she had a stunning one.

AnonymousBleep · 13/05/2025 10:29

No. (JMO).

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 13/05/2025 10:37

I like it. Ed Hardy vibes and that patterned / tattoo style is coming back

s3tut0y3r · 13/05/2025 11:08

I think that brand is geared towards 40 / 50 year olds. So not toddler like. However I would be worried that the coat wore me than I wore the coat. Does it fit your vibe?

polyhymnia · 13/05/2025 13:02

Tacky and I’m not a fan of Joe Brown. But if it fits well and makes you feel great I guess you’ll get a lot of pleasure from it.

Classicalgas · 13/05/2025 13:28

I love it and I usually hate Joe browns, it’s like desigual’s slightly more catalog style sister

BobbyBiscuits · 13/05/2025 13:51

I'd say no. You never get the benefit of the pattern and if others don't like it they can't avoid it when seeing your back. It's too garish. It looks a bit like something from 2003/4.
Just get a plain denim jacket or one with a less OTT embroidery.

£100 is a lot to pay for something that is VERY dated. Not a good look imo.

All of Joe Browns is very dated and Granny vibes

I can't decide if describing clothes as having granny vibes is as bad or worse than describing clothes as being mumsy. In either case is there actually such a look?

Brilliant!!! And spot on

housethatbuiltme · 13/05/2025 17:26

I'm late 30s and I like it and wear similar (but vintage ones from the 80s/90s), I get lots of compliments on them.

Then again I don't have the typical 'mumsnet' style (most the things posted on here I would never wear in a million years) so if I like it I assume many hear will announce that it 'awful' with some unnecessary put down to make you feel bad for stepping out of the middle class norm.

Regardless of my (or anyones) opinion though life is really far too short to care if a judgemental person who isn't comfortable in themselves wants to poke fun at the fact you can be yourself and wear something more 'colourful' (although honestly it virtually never happens). If YOU like it then get it and rock it.

I’m not a big fan of JB but enough already with the ageism, please.

It’s so fucking tedious.
