Does everyone except me use fake tan?

I was watching MAFSA and I noticed that the women looked normal colour (Jamie actually commented on being too pale) and the next night, at the dinner, they all had fake tans. They all looked really great, glowing and healthy.

I’ve also heard those around me at work and other places saying they get a spray tan, or use fake tan.

I’ve never ever done this, mainly because I just assumed I’d look like an orange. Also I don’t have a lot of time to stand around and let it do its work.

That said, I look loads better with a tan and I don’t want to sit in the sun.

So, enlighten me on fake tanning please. Tell me how easy it is, what you use, and how long it takes and lasts.

Never. I'd look ridiculous. I don't tan in sun, so suddenly developing a fake one overnight would look deeply unnatural.

Temporaryname158 · 28/03/2025 15:41

No, and those who use it frequently look streaky and orange up close….it also smells!

SpringIsSpringing25 · 28/03/2025 15:41

Nope.

i'm the colour I am and that's that!!

BatchCookBabe · 28/03/2025 15:43

I don't! I do have a medium skin tone though. (Spanish grandmother.) So don't actually need fake tan. I get a deep tan in the summer.

Tarantella6 · 28/03/2025 15:43

I'm way too paranoid about it being uneven, streaky, or turning all my clothes and bedsheets orange. Don't you have to exfoliate first? What if I miss a bit?!

I am an irresponsible child of the 80s and I am happy to go out in the sun with factor 15.

Tlikestotalk · 28/03/2025 15:44

Nope, I don’t either. I tried fake tan once and looked ridiculous and the upkeep is something I’m not willing to do! And frequent sun beds ages your skin terribly so im happy to be pasty.

Butterflyfern · 28/03/2025 15:45

I use a bit of the gradual tanning moisturiser on my legs the first few times I wear shorts/skirts in summer. That's it. Too much faff otherwise!

RaininSummer · 28/03/2025 15:45

Never done that. Seems a lot of aggro to try to change colour.

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 28/03/2025 15:57

I do occasionally. It’s not awful if you use a good one that suits your skin.

I use coco and eve as it’s not too dark, no orange, no streaks and doesn’t smell.
I had the awful tanners as a teen that smelled of biscuits and turned a lovely orangey colour!

I think the trick is lots of exfoliation and to moisturise areas like knees and elbows.
get my husband to do the harder to reach areas.

I like a bit of a tan sometimes because it makes me feel good.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/03/2025 15:59

I don't use it. I'm very pale, it wouldn't look like a tan and I'd be afraid of leaving orange blotches anywhere I was sitting. No, not for me.

Allmarbleslost · 28/03/2025 16:00

I don't. I'm not sure how anyone has the time to be honest - I guess it has to be done vey regularly to maintain it?

Jamfirstest · 28/03/2025 16:00

I use it - it's so easy if you use a gradual tanner. The dove one is brilliant and as long as you scrub in between your fingers it's hard to mess it up!

KitsyWitsy · 28/03/2025 16:03

I am translucent and proud. People have suggested fake tan to me before but I think I look lovely just as I am and I’m sure you do too.

InMyMNEra · 28/03/2025 16:03

I use the Dove moisturiser one in summer. It’s quite natural looking, especially if I only apply it twice or so a week

I had a spray tan once, and felt absolutely ridiculous

Ohthatsabitshit · 28/03/2025 16:03

There used to be a brilliant one you put on the showered off but it was discontinued during lockdown and never reappeared. I look much better with a little colour.

Doggymummar · 28/03/2025 16:04

Tanning formulation had changed a lot since I was a teen and had streaks. I use Bondi Sands dark tan all summer long. It goes in tinted and develops over night, I shower off the next morning. It doesn't smell. Or come off on the sheets. I use the mousse and one can does a couple of applications ( I was size 20last summer so this year it might do more)

Ponderingwindow · 28/03/2025 16:06

in my neck of the woods, fake tans go along with red hats and cybertrucks.

Titasaducksarse · 28/03/2025 16:10

No I don't use it, however although I'm naturally a skin tone that tans easily and I'm not pale even in middle of winter.

MeliusMoriQuamServire · 28/03/2025 16:29

No, never. Tried it couple of times in my early teens out of curiosity. Also don't like 'real' tan as I hate sun/beach/sand. I'm very milky pale and I love it.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/03/2025 16:33

What's MAFSA?
No, I've never used fake tan. I'm a teacher and even if I'd thought about trying it, the many orangey-hued and streaky examples walking round school would put me off tbh! I'm pretty pale and feel no particular need to look tanned.

TheDandyLion · 28/03/2025 16:39

I did it once when I was a teenager but soon got bored and couldn't be bothered to do it ever again. It just made me look like bacon anyway.

SwedishEdith · 28/03/2025 16:39

I use the Dove one on my legs when going on holiday. I never tan, hate being pasty but do want to wear shorter dresses and skirts. I just look like most other people look before they go away, not "tanned".

15 minutes at most. Exfoliate in the shower, moisturise your knees and elbows and then use a mitt to put the tan on. Dance around the room naked for 2 minutes and you are good to go.

leviosanotleviosa25 · 28/03/2025 16:52

Nope, I’m pale blue redhead and it is what it is
I did look around at a family funeral with everyone’s dark olive skin, dark eyes and dark hair and realise I looked like I had been dropped in from another family Grin
My cousin looks at the sun and gets a tan, I go abroad for 3 weeks and return the same colour

GauntJudy · 28/03/2025 16:53

I use tan luxe serum on my face at bedtime, gives a nice healthy glow. People comment that I look radiant (so much better than them asking me if I'm tired!)

In summer I often use bondi sands fair mousse for an all over tan. Again it makes my mottled cellulite legs a bit more presentable! It goes on well and has a natural look. Highly recommend giving it a go!
