Does everyone except me use fake tan?

I was watching MAFSA and I noticed that the women looked normal colour (Jamie actually commented on being too pale) and the next night, at the dinner, they all had fake tans. They all looked really great, glowing and healthy.

I’ve also heard those around me at work and other places saying they get a spray tan, or use fake tan.

I’ve never ever done this, mainly because I just assumed I’d look like an orange. Also I don’t have a lot of time to stand around and let it do its work.

That said, I look loads better with a tan and I don’t want to sit in the sun.

So, enlighten me on fake tanning please. Tell me how easy it is, what you use, and how long it takes and lasts.

I have auburn hair, if i used fake tan I’d look truly bizarre! I embrace the pre-Raphaelite look and wear a lot of big hats 😁

LoudSnoringDog · 28/03/2025 21:10

I’ve had a spray tan once in my life. I was bridesmaid for my cousin and I looked so ridiculous that all the photos with me in them had to be processed black and white. So embarrassing

CMOTDibbler · 28/03/2025 21:17

Every couple of years I believe the hype that fake tan has changed and am orange and streaky for a bit. I am naturally very pale, can’t/ don’t tan and my skin hates all fake tan type stuff it seems including the gradual colour ones. If I feel the need to expose my legs and want to add colour I use Sally Hansen airbrush legs

SwanOfThoseThings · 28/03/2025 21:25

Never used it. Happy to be tanned in summer and pale in winter.

BeretRaspberry · 28/03/2025 21:31

I’m also deathly pale but grey looking with it so I use the Bondi Sands Express one and shower off before I go to bed. It’s a gorgeous colour.

Currently sat here with my no7 gradual tan moisturiser on which i have been using for years. Highly Highly recommend this if you want a glow but not have to sit in a sticky sweaty 8 hour biscuits smelling slump.

It takes me approximately 5 minutes to apply to my whole body (just like a daily moisturiser would). Dries in no time at all. I can shower after 2 hours and it'll continue to develop, however I have slept in it in the past and it's not transferred onto my pj's or white under sheets.

It's not quite fake tan like a spray tan as it only slightly boosts my colour, but if I want a deeper tan I just pop more on a few nights in a row.

For those who say fake tan never looks good, I disagree. If applied correctly on clean and exploited skin, it can look great. However, too many people just get extra dark spray tans on dry and unkempt skin, which does indeed look awful.

doodahdayy · 28/03/2025 21:44

No. It’s a hassle and I like looking pale tough.

EconomyClassRockstar · 28/03/2025 21:46

I do but I'm really good at applying it and use 3 different ones, depending which part of my face/body and time of year. I am only making myself about 1 shade darker than I actually am but it makes me happier.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 28/03/2025 21:49

I’m paler than a dead person and I don’t use it. Even professional spray or rub in tans leave me patchy at some point. They can look great… on other people. I’m ok with it but recently people have started asking me why I don’t like it’s me that’s out of kilter with society.

I often get comments on how pale I am but I think it suits me. I used to get a few mean comments a a child but it never bothered me then either. I hoped a tan wouldn’t always be fashionable but I’m happy to ignore the trend anyway

Stepfordian · 28/03/2025 22:04

They’ve got a lot better than the ones we used to use in the 90s, I use a St Tropez spray on mist, it’s a gradual tanner so it doesn’t go too orange or streaky.

ADHDHDHDHD · 28/03/2025 22:32

Aldi Lacura medium fake tan mousse. Applied with a soft fake tan mitt. 3 pumps per leg. Smooth it all over quite speedily. Dries practically instantly. Develops nicely. Does not smell. Wears off non streaky. It is a game changer for milk bottle white legs like myself!

mathanxiety · 28/03/2025 22:40

Sickly pale here. I've never done it. However, I live in a place that gets lots of sun, and people with complexions like mine use sunscreen.

aliasname · 28/03/2025 22:47

I think only people who have great skin/hair/body type look good with really pale skin. If you’re pretty ugly like me, a little tan looks good.

I use the moisturiser with just a hint of tan, it is only a gradual shade. I must be the only person who actually likes the biscuity smell? Makes me think of summer.

CarpetKnees · 28/03/2025 22:59

No.
Nor do the overwhelming majority of women I know.

(Am also wondering what MAFSA is)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/03/2025 23:05

I use the Dove gradual tan a couple of times a week - have a bath, exfoliate, whack it on. (I’d be having the bath anyway.) I also use a tanning drop thing in my night moisturiser every few days for my face, literally one drop.

Dottycotton86 · 28/03/2025 23:08

I tan twice a week. Wish I’d never bloody started

Yes this.

My skin is quite blotchy and uneven, freckled and high colour and my face and legs don't tan at all. If my skin was a lovely smooth pale colour I'd be fine with it.

I look a lot better with a little fake tan in the summer.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 29/03/2025 02:01

Never used it. I don't like tanned skin.

No it looks like bathing in strong tea it has never looked good on anyone and sure no needs permission to use it but no idea where people get the idea it looks good from of the 'I feel pressured to look fake' comes from

Harbourofdiscovery · 29/03/2025 03:06

I am very pale, but if I do catch the sun I tan. But I slather on the factor 50 on any exposed areas as I live in the tropics. Never really felt the need to use a false tan even in the UK.

See many tourists arrive though with a fake tan.....then go very very red...

EatingHealthy · 29/03/2025 03:30

I don't think the women on MAFSA should be regarded as representative of the average woman/ majority of women in any regard.

Personally, no, I have never used fake tan / got a spray tan. And I think the fake tan industry is just as offensive as skin lightening/bleaching products designed for dark skinned people.

You can stop any time. It would just be assumed your tan had faded - like it does for every person who tans naturally
