Does everyone except me use fake tan?

I was watching MAFSA and I noticed that the women looked normal colour (Jamie actually commented on being too pale) and the next night, at the dinner, they all had fake tans. They all looked really great, glowing and healthy.

I’ve also heard those around me at work and other places saying they get a spray tan, or use fake tan.

I’ve never ever done this, mainly because I just assumed I’d look like an orange. Also I don’t have a lot of time to stand around and let it do its work.

That said, I look loads better with a tan and I don’t want to sit in the sun.

So, enlighten me on fake tanning please. Tell me how easy it is, what you use, and how long it takes and lasts.

I dabbled as a teen but it never ended well, encouraged by my daughter I’ve tried the gradual tanning moisturisers this year.
Garnier was awful, patchy and smells bad, Dove much better on my arms but my legs are still awful. It looks like my paleness is shining through under the tan.
However, three people have complimented me on how well I look and have asked if I’ve lost weight. Nothing has changed except the tan.

I use This Works Perfect Legs Serum. It gives a gorgeous golden (not orange) glow with a lovely sheen and washes off in the shower. It doesn’t transfer to clothes or bedding. Although it’s called Perfect Legs it can be used all over.

Disturbia81 · 12/07/2025 19:31

No I just look orange and smell of biscuits. I can’t be arsed with the staining, colour matching to my face, drying, smell etc
Pale is beautiful and really stands out now.

Shuttheblinds · 12/07/2025 23:45

I’ve tried the gradual tanning body moisturiser and apply it like body lotion and for the life of me don’t know what I am doing wrong because it always ends up streaky. I’ve tried applying it with a mitt too and still as bad.

i did read that it’s best to use the darker shade to prevent it looking orangey, not sure if that’s true but I tried both and still ended up with streaks.

Could somebody please tell me how I should apply it, why am I getting streaks and which one is the best to use.

I look better with a bit of a tan, but the only bit of me that vaguely tans is my forearms. I put it on in the summer for special occasions or if I'll be getting my legs out. I don't really bother from autumn to spring.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 13/07/2025 06:43

I use gradual tan in winter, once my natural tan starts to fade. It just gives me that slight colour.

Years ago I used to use St Tropez, but I don't have the patience to wait for it to dry. Gradual tan means I can put it on a night and wake up with a bit of colour, shower and there's no smell.

I’ve used it for over 20+ years and started just before my wedding which was in the winter, I’m fair and pale so had it done professionally, not even in a booth, it was applied by hand! After a few days it’s the perfect golden colour on me and it made me feel just a bit nicer on my wedding day. I also find on my face my eye bags vanish with a tan.

Ever since then I’ve used it sporadically, I’ve stuck to a few brands skinny tan being my current brand, and I’ve paid for spray tans over the years maybe 2-3 times a year, just before holiday and events.

i just find it makes me personally feel better especially in shorts or dresses if my legs are a tiny bit brown.

I use the dark dove one.. maybe don’t apply so much? I find it streaks if I use huge amounts.

No. I tend to think of it in the same bracket as long false nails with ‘nail art’ and tattoos. Not for me.

faffadoodledo · 13/07/2025 07:27

I play tennis year round, and when the skirt comes out in spring I use Dove. The palest version. It gives my legs a head start.

GameOfJones · 13/07/2025 07:44

I am deathly pale but have started using a gradual tanner and do feel a lot better.... particularly on my legs. I've tried the St Mortiz fake tan in the past and it gave a really good result but I can't be bothered sitting around for 8 hours while it develops and I look ridiculous before washing it off. I know you're supposed to apply it at night and go to sleep but I'd hate the thought of getting into bed with fake tan on.

I've now been using the Nivea firming gradual tan body lotion for a couple of summers and it's brilliant. It doesn't streak at all. I just put it on like a normal body lotion on my legs, arms, face, neck and chest and then wash my hands and get dressed. It takes two minutes and I do it twice a week which gives me a very faint glow. I still look pale but just a bit healthier in my opinion. If you wanted it darker you'd apply it more regularly.

I only do it in summer when my legs are on show more often and stick to being super pale the rest of the year.

Morgenrot25 · 13/07/2025 07:56

No, I just don't see the point.
I do naturally tan a bit, but my tan always looks more golden as opposed to browm, and I do tend to be quite strict on myself regarding sun protection. I don't judge folk who use fake tan though, if it makes them happier, and it's definitely better than a sun bed imho (though don't judge those users either). It's 2025, we should be able to look how we want to look.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 13/07/2025 07:57

No, I hate the smell. I also don't naturally tan either because of the UV risks

sashh · 13/07/2025 08:51

I don't use it. I embrace my Scottish and Irish ancestry.

I had a massage on the beach in Bali, you pay for 10 or 15 mins. The woman kept massaging and I said I'm not going to pay you any more. She said, "No, beautiful white skin".

Skissors · 13/07/2025 09:17

No, never used a fake tan.
Back in the 90s and early 00s I used sunbeds, but they were pretty unpleasant really and not a good idea.

What is MAFSA ?

MammaTo · 13/07/2025 10:17

It’s definitely a practise makes perfect type of thing and also trial and error finding a brand that you like. For day to day I like the dove moisturiser and for special events I like the isle of paradise stuff. I’ve had spray tans for holidays, bridesmaid duties etc and they do feel super dark but on photos look marvellous! As a super pale ginger person from Liverpool I’ve been practising these skills since about age 14, but if you wanted to dip
your toe a gradual tanner would be a good start.

fetachocolate · 13/07/2025 10:46

A bit of subtle tan looks better on my pale skin in summer so sometimes I do, but equally if I can't be bothered I don't.

dollyblue01 · 14/07/2025 22:07

Fake tans have come a long way , you need to find one to suit your skin tone, plenty of subtle ones , gone are the cheap smelling dark ones, just give you a hint of colour.

FestivusMiracle · 14/07/2025 22:21

I fake tan in the summer. Once a week I exfoliate all over and then I use the St Tropez Luxe Serum all over. I NEVER let my skin be exposed to the sun, so this gives me a really good natural tan that people always comment on.

IDontHateRainbows · 14/07/2025 22:31

I don't use fake tan but I look tanned as j naturally tan easily and am not a fan of the factor 50.

Disturbia81 · 15/07/2025 19:05

I think another thing I don’t like about it is the uniform look. A real tan only goes in certain places like the tops of arms instead of all the arm etc

Chipsahoy · 15/07/2025 20:34

I only do my legs with garnier gradual tan, the light one. Apply every day for about three or four days in spring and then every three days until autumn. I do it at night so don’t have to smell like biscuits all day!
