Does everyone except me use fake tan?

I was watching MAFSA and I noticed that the women looked normal colour (Jamie actually commented on being too pale) and the next night, at the dinner, they all had fake tans. They all looked really great, glowing and healthy.

I’ve also heard those around me at work and other places saying they get a spray tan, or use fake tan.

I’ve never ever done this, mainly because I just assumed I’d look like an orange. Also I don’t have a lot of time to stand around and let it do its work.

That said, I look loads better with a tan and I don’t want to sit in the sun.

So, enlighten me on fake tanning please. Tell me how easy it is, what you use, and how long it takes and lasts.

If you live in England then having a year round tan, especially an orange one looks ridiculous

User415373 · 28/03/2025 16:58

I am very pale and never ever naturally tan. But I do apply fake tan for a rare night out, and got a spray last year for a wedding. I feel great with it and people tell me how healthy I look when I have one! I don't look orange and actually am still not as tanned as some of my friends with olive skin tones when I have one.
I also love my pale skin and don't need to be tanned but I just love the way it looks.

I use a bit of the gradual tanning moisturiser on my legs the first few times I wear shorts/skirts in summer. That's it. Too much faff otherwise!

Same.

I also really hate unnatural looking 'tan' colours.

maw1681 · 28/03/2025 17:03

No I don’t, I am a redhead and have naturally pale skin so would look ridiculous.
I also can’t bear the smell!

Sinkintotheswamp · 28/03/2025 17:03

No. I walk most places so I keep a little colour in my face all year round.
My legs get some sun from jogging from April to October. We're talking rich tea colour, not even digestive biscuit colour.

dollyblue01 · 28/03/2025 17:05

Yes I use bondi sands light looks good on not orange the trick is to go for a light one , scrub then apply

TheeNotoriousPIG · 28/03/2025 17:09

No. I mean, I look almost as white as Wednesday Addams on my sibling's wedding photos in comparison to the other guests, but I'm OK with that. I have absolutely no desire to look like I've been rolled in Doritos!

The only people that I've known to fake tan (accidentally or otherwise!), and have it looking genuine, are the ones that use the Dove tanning moisturiser. However... applying that would require too much effort for me!

MsCactus · 28/03/2025 17:10

I'm the palest possible skin tone (have to add whiteners to foundation to match me) and I don't tan. I used to as a teen but then became allergic - it's honestly too much faff.

I have dark eyes, dark auburn hair and red lips, so pale skin kinda suits. If I wasn't allergic id probably still fake tan for holidays/beech or special occasions, but all the time is too much effort

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 28/03/2025 17:12

Never! Tans look ridiculous on most people, unless they are already born with an olive complexion. Not sure why anyone would want to fake it tbh.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 28/03/2025 17:15

No way.

MorrisZapp · 28/03/2025 17:21

Used it sporadically all my adult life. It's easy once you know what you're doing. Makes me look slimmer and all my clothes look better. Only use it in summer, mind.

anonymous98 · 28/03/2025 17:30

I use the Dove light/medium gradual tan sometimes. (I may be biased) but I think it looks quite tasteful and not overdone.

mdinbc · 28/03/2025 17:39

I've used the l'Oreal Sublime Bronze tinted lotion, especially at early summer when my legs are exposed for the first few times. Because it's tinted, you can see where you are adding the lotion, and ensure there are no streaks.

It does give a nice tint to skin, without being orangey.

Firenzeflower · 28/03/2025 17:41

I’m a sort of pale grey colour. Occasionally go a kind of slightly dark white.
I’ve never fake tanned. I know I would do it wrong and look like I’d emptied bistro down myself.

the80sweregreat · 28/03/2025 17:44

Nope, never used it.

Doingmybestbut · 28/03/2025 17:56

In the summer I use a bit of tinted aftersun on my legs.

Powderblue1 · 28/03/2025 20:10

I’m pretty new to it but I do love it as I stay out of the sun and wear factor 50. I use a st tropez mousse it’s the black bottle with gold lettering. It’s not streaky at all, not too dark and looks really natural. I can even use on my face and apply with an old makeup brush. I like to use it in the summer when my legs are pale and I’m wearing skirts or shorts. Also use before a holiday.

2025willbemytime · 28/03/2025 20:13

Only on special occasions. Just tried a new one as apparently it doesn't smell like biscuits.

It does. 😡

Sofiewoo · 28/03/2025 20:13

Also I don’t have a lot of time to stand around and let it do its work.

Thats not how it works? I either use a gradual moisturiser, a mousse with a tanning mit or an at home spray can. You just apply it and go on with your evening or day depending on when you put it on.
It takes no longer than normal body moisturiser and there’s no standing around.

Plenty of people don’t fake tan though, it’s hardly unique.

LapinR0se · 28/03/2025 20:19

i am pure white and hate my skin because it never ever ever tans. I use am ambre solaire mousse in the summer which takes the blue look off.

MyCatNamedCookingFat · 28/03/2025 20:25

I use a pale tanning wipe on my legs in the summer as my legs are now very veiny and the veiny looks better with a slight bit of colour. Or I use the palest Sally Hansen spray legs or whatever it is called, which gives better coverage.

My sister gets a regular dark spray tan all over, we are both blue Irish and she looks ridiculous.

ShaunaSadeki · 28/03/2025 20:31

I use Isle of Paradise drops for a few days before big events or holidays, probably twice or three times per year. I just add a few drops to body lotion and I put it in on with a mitt then wash my hands REALLY well afterwards.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 28/03/2025 20:35

I use a light tan before I go away in summer so I'm not the obvious just arrived tourist, but it's a quick drying very gentle one that most people wouldn't notice

Wexone · 28/03/2025 20:44

tan has come long long way since the orange streaky ones. most of the time you dint actually realise people have it on. there is mouse sprays tinted creams ones that develope overnight and some instant. maintenance is easy I use an exfoliatior all time to help my skin aswell as moisturise all the time. so I sometimes change to one that has a tan developer in it. it gives a lovely colour. I am lucky I tan in sun but don't have time for that. a tan makes my skin look a whole lot better in winter it's a horrible grey ish colour. mix a few tan drops into my foundation to warm up my face gives me a boost. its up to you if you want to wear it or not.

paisley256 · 28/03/2025 20:59

I'll use the Sally Hansen leg spray in the summer to take the blue tinge off my legs. James Read do a gradual tan face spray that gives me a lovely subtle glow so I usually use that in the summer combined with Dove gradual tan everywhere else.

I honestly wish I didn't have to but I'm not a lovely milky creamy white I'm more corned beef legs and blue veins, I feel much better if I have some sort of light glow when baring the flesh.
