Help with wedding guest dress swanky venue but comfortable and relaxed

Chocolatey1234 · 27/02/2025 12:07

I am a guest at a very upmarket out of my comfort zone summer wedding and I need a nice dress to carry me from day to night that looks good and I feel comfortable and relaxed in and that I have made an effort. I am a size 18 to 20 and almost 6ft tall.

Criteria.
Comfortable to wear.
Midi or maxi length (not floor length or mini).
Not overly hot sweat inducing fabric
Not empire line as it really doesn’t suit me.
Either short, capped or little floaty sleeves (not balloon sleeves.
Not heavily structured fabric.
Minimising my tummy.
Not Long Tall Sally (quality shocking).
Not plain navy.

I am in my 50’s and can wear most colours except black, pale pink or yellow.

Hit me with suggestions.

Anymore recommendations please? I would like something flattering on my tummy, smart but relaxed, not overly warm and something I can wear for more than one occasion that isn’t too bridesmaidy.

Have a look at Me&Em
There dresses are incredibly flattering and very generous on the fit

I have been looking at this for a wedding.

madaboutpurple · 10/03/2025 11:51

I think Scarlett& Jo have some lovely dresses .Also Roman Originals.

Chocolatey1234 · 10/03/2025 13:16

Thanks both. The M&S dress looks nice @Blingismything but I tried a similar style one on and the waistband is too high and in the wrong place with me being tall. I also tried a lovely plain coloured teal dress from Scarlett & Jo @madaboutpurple the length was fab but in the plain colour it looked a bit bridesmaidy but again the waist was too high so it was really unflattering on my tummy and I looked very pregnant.

Have you looked at Adrianna Pappell dresses. I got one from Vinted and the range is stunning in my opinion. Also worth considering is David Emmanuel dresses on Vinted or eBay. Also worth a look are Simply Be ,JD Williams, Joanna Hope.I hope you find a lovely dress.

JellyComb · 11/03/2025 09:44

What about one with ruching on the tummy area?

Green Floral Printed Zelda Midi Dress I think Nobody's Child dresses are lovely, not overly expensive and are true to size. I'm exactly the same age and proportions as you. Wish I had a dress I could send to you!

No, I didn't. I searched for 18-20.

harriethoyle · 11/03/2025 18:20

@JellyComb you might have missed that the outnet often uses American sizing and so @FaeFae ’s link to a us 14 is a uk 18.

I’ve surprised at how lovely Boden’s dresses are this season.

I filtered it down to size 18/20 & to midi & maxi dresses - it came up with a whole bunch of dresses that (I think) meet your requirements.

I'm a similar size to you (pear shaped with a tummy, size 18-20, 5'9) and I find Monsoon fits me very well - it's long enough and usually good quality (agree with you on Long tall sally! awful quality)
The below would be flattering on me:

I also have this exact dress - it's super flattering and comfortable to wear, and is the only item I own I get compliments on from complete strangers pretty much every time I wear it

Cos

Couple of big bangles, simple hoops, and a bold lip, a mid blocky heel?

katscamel · 12/03/2025 10:09

There's a woman on Instagram.... think her name is Jessontheplussize (??) who posted a rather lovely green dress the other day. Unfortunately I can't remember where it was from.

If it was the chartreuse dress, it was from Fashion SZN

That Derek Lam dress is beautiful.

Have a look on the Frank Lyman website. They have some really good dressy jumpsuits with overlays, good for disguising bits you don’t want to show, they are quite long and so suitable for taller people.
