My engagement ring arrived this morning and I'm so in love with it, can I see yours?

I agree, all so so beautiful 😍

Skigal86 · 01/03/2025 21:08

Mine was my grandmas and is too delicate for wearing every day now 😭 this wasn’t the ring he proposed with my parents gave him a different one(my grandma had two!) but this was the one I’d always wanted 💗

A beautiful ring. Could you not have it strengthened? I bid for an emerald and diamond ring at an auction (got an absolute bargain!). The band was fragile and the setting of the gems needed checking. It was worth spending money on it because I have had lots of people admiring it, I've had it on my right hand for years now with no problem.

Yes, I had the shank replaced on my Victorian engagement ring. I had another ring which I was prepared to "sacrifice" so I think it only cost about £100. This was a couple of years ago.

Very unusual and pretty ring @Skigal86.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 02/03/2025 13:15

These belonged to my late grandma. From the 1940's, I'd guess. Not to my taste but they're beautiful.

I looked into it but emeralds aren’t ideal for daily wear, and to make everything properly secure it would mean the settings needed to be more robust which would have changed the look of it. We went to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham instead and I had an eternity ring made which DD and DH helped design.

I love your Grandma's ring. I have an emerald and diamond ring set in platinum but I didn't know you shouldn't wear emeralds every day (I don't but was thinking I might). What have you been told about emeralds?

They aren’t as hard as other stones so more susceptible to damage, can chip easily if knocked. My grandma wore it every day and I wore it every day for 6 years, but once one stone went I kept having more issues.

Thanks - mine's a family heirloom (sentimental - probably not hugely valuable) so I'll just keep wearing it for special occasions.

I've worn my emeral ring I mentioned every day for years, never take it off, so seems OK to me. And I get my rings checked every few years.

I’ve had mine chip twice, and that’s with a rub over setting, so not overly exposed, so I just keep it for special occasion now. I would never have chosen an emerald for an engagement ring if I knew how fragile they are.

I’ve just done something very naff and bought myself a commitment ring- from me, to me. It marks the end of a very hard period in my life and is a marker every day that I am committed to looking after myself in recovery. I’m single and have struggled with that sometimes so it feels massive for me.
I’ll find a pic

@Floursacktabletop Late to the party but although not the same here is a story about my granny. When she got married her DH promised her on their golden wedding anniversary he would buy her an eternity ring. Sadly he died very early. She bought herself an eternity ring on the day that would have been their 50th. She could have done it any time but she said - no - I was promised one for my 50th so that is when it was going to be

She was very pleased with it. She said it sparkled very nicely under the light at the Bridge club "especially now I have taken to collecting the cards with my left hand"

Another to say - not naff at all. 💐

I agree, absolutely not naff.

My Mum did a similar thing. My Dad promised her an eternity ring for their 50th wedding anniversary but sadly he died a few years before so my Mum bought herself the ring instead.

My Granddad wouldn't buy my Nan a ring but bought her other jewellery. When he died she sold the other things and bought herself a diamond ring. I have it now but had it made into a necklace.

I got it from The Jewelry Quarter, Birmingham. I chose the setting then they bought in a diamond to DH spec. It took 3 weeks before we could collect it. I do know a person who has diamond earrings in the same setting from same place I got mine from. I'd quite like some myself.

Do you mind telling me what jeweller you used?

No 1 Hockey my DH says. I've no idea now. It was the first shop we started at because I liked it, then we looked up and down the whole row before coming back to first shop we started at.

Thank you. I’m heading there in a month or two and don’t know where to start, but will be limited on time. I’m not looking for an engagement ring, am actually looking for antique jewellery, specifically a watch.

Stumpie111 · 04/03/2025 10:38

So amazed that my post raised so many lovely responses as I belong on Gransnet! We have 4 grandsons and 1 grandaughter so no problem as to whom will inherite my precious ring. I will also accompany it with the love story behind it 🥰

Possibly they mean Hockley jewellers?
