Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 14:32

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

1990?

1990?

I feel like we’re missing the cheesecloth with the teeny tiny mirrors though.

ForeverLoveCeltic · 17/02/2025 05:38

Jodhpurs & wellies? 🤣

ForeverLoveCeltic · 17/02/2025 06:00

What do the asylum seeker/refugee status mums wear in Hampstead?

Bloody hell, just looked at the price of Celine baseball caps! Wowsers. 🙈. No baseball cap is worth £500!

Honestly writing it out made me realise how insane it is. And it’s not even seen as special as “everyone” has one.

oh and celine wool hats in winter of course.

also thinking I’ve never seen anyone “in real life” in a dry robe type thing!

In my head, I see those as very different places, with very distinct (extremely dissimilar) vibes and demographics. Maybe that’s what pp meant?

It’s hard to describe but very common for ‘our friends’ to have first lived in flat in Hampstead, moved to Mill Hill for more space and then on to Radlett when kids around 10 years for more private schools and more space again.

Thinking about it I do think the common link is the NW london Jewish community so realise it is hard to understand on a ‘surface level’.

although of course have many non Jewish friends who I’m including in my descriptors. But very heavy Jewish areas (not religious / orthodox though).

however, look at the clothes and you’ll see the link!!!! 🤣 very evident in Brent Cross which would be the middle ground shopping centre for all areas mentioned.

PS lots of talk about these clothes being drop off looks only - the ones I described are weekends and holidays round here too.

@ForZanyAquaViewer thanks for this thread have found it so amusing but also insightful….

genuinely giving away / selling a £500 baseball cap as it is pathetic. It really is. And would hate my 3 year old daughter to think she has to be part of a herd of sheep… Vinted here I come!!!!!

it’s not about money or disposable income etc. It’s the ‘doing it cos everyone else is’ that’s clearly an issue.

the question is, no fucking idea what else I’d like to wear but will at least start will replacing with non branded stuff out of principle!!!

so thank you OP… the posts have made me smile but hopefully will help me make some positive changes for my daughters sake!! X

That's really positive. You're right to think what sort of example are we setting to our kids.

It is bad I don't follow any of these trends, maybe that's why I have not got a lot of friends hahah

Water in this context means river, swimming pool, lake etc as you probably are aware. Do you have a dry robe by any chance ?

of course I have a dry robe. So do my kids. They're amazing and worth every penny. It's not a fashion statement, it's a basic clothing.

I have no intention to try wild swimming ever 😂

lentilbake16 · 17/02/2025 07:57

Is dry robe a basic price please?

What do you mean by a basic price. Google it. Prices vary a bit.

Wealthy small NW town, athleisure here! Outifits of matching colour wide leg trousers and tops, sports leggings with sports socks and sweatshirts, oversized fleece pullovers mostly Adanola brand. Trainers are mostly New Balance with the odd designer brand like Balenciaga or Gucci thrown in. Lots of (designer brand) long puffer coats in black or stone/cream/beige.

Knutsford or Lymm?

Zimp · 17/02/2025 08:16

Jodhpurs or nondescript trousers, usually covered in mud of some sort, the same jumper as yesterday, no bag, functional coats and the odd Dryrobes here and there. Muddy wellies or old shoes. I find it hugely refreshing after having spend 20 years in London keeping up with things I thought I wanted to wear at the time!

So much Converse slander on this thread! 🤣

I used to LOVE them. I’ve got loads. Stopped wearing them a few years ago, but I’ve no idea why. I still think they look nice and have always thought of them as timeless/ageless shoes. Same way I feel about DMs.

I had them (converse), loved them, lived in them. Then Theresa May wore them. Never could bring myself to wear them again. They now feel frumpy, and like I'm a non trendy Tory trying desperately to be 'hip'. So I gave them all to my daughter. 😂😂😂😂😂

Nether Edge, Sheffield! See 'Mark Steele Comes to Town' BBC Sounds!

FlappingMadly · 17/02/2025 09:43

No uniform here. Schol is near a wood so boots often seen from walking dog before pick up. It's more in summer floaty dress brigade. If I get my arms in shape post weight loss I'll be joining them!

My son's girlfriend (19) always wears Converse though admittedly she isn't from the UK.

When they were in fashion I thought they looked OK (they were definitely part of the mum uniform when I had my youngest in 2014, along with skinny jeans, breton striped top and olive green parka!) But I never bought any as the soles looked so flat and unsupportive. I've always wondered, are they actually comfortable? Sorry to derail!

FastFood · 17/02/2025 10:19

SE London

We have 2 main styles

  1. The usual black leggings / white socks / big beige fleece / black puffer jacket.
  2. Mum jeans / dungarees / oversized jumper / that kaki green boxy quilted jacket that was ubiquitous last year or a long coat / doc martens or New Balance. A totebag from a cool art gallery. And a cockapoo.
Biddie191 · 17/02/2025 11:04

Surely the socks pulled up over leggings is a nod to equestrians ; they wear long socks with breeches so they can get riding boots on (and off) easily and comfortably. Puffa jackets also fit with that.
Around here there's quite a variety of clothes, but at the moment most with long, warm, waterproof coats, as the weather is pants.
South Wales, semi rural

Yorkshire.

Vega trainers. Straight leg jeans. Long puffer coats that look like sleeping bags. Uniqlo cross body bag.

Utterly depressing.

😂 “utterly depressing”
bit concerning that someone else’s dress sense has the ability to utterly depress you.

TheQueenInTheNorth · 17/02/2025 12:15

Crocs, leggings, jeans or joggers and body warmers or you get the pj and dressing gown crew with fluffy sliders 😂😂
