Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Our area went through a phase of pjs on the school run. it’s definitely now white Nike socks over leggings and crocs. When I’m Not in work clothes dropping off i am in jeans and jumper

Whatayear2023 · 16/02/2025 18:59

Yes school run is split into the stylish lot with pure white socks with trainers crocs and long north face coats and sunglasses even in rain wtf then there's the I'm wearing my pj fleece under my tesco coat lot... its very clickey at my school and I normally just stand alone right at the back.

What a great thread. Ha, Vejas. They're the ones the Princess of Wales wore in her 'Message from Catherine' video last September. They're definitely a 40+ thing.

There's an equestrian theme going on at my school at the moment, only one parent actually owns horses.

There's one dad who turns up in shorts and a vest no matter the weather, it was -2°c yesterday morning and there he was in his cargo shorts and Boyzone vest.

This was years ago, but one very, very, tall chap used to turn up in tight cycling shorts and a shocking pink vest. For some reason he reminded me of a flamingo but I don't think that was the effect he intended..

I’ve always detested uniforms (blame school!),
I love individuality,
BUT….
I have veja ( originals from around 15 years ago ) still going strong; £1.5k bags etc etc
bought to use as they last forever , lots of similar things over the years . I’ve never followed fashion, just bought what I thought wouldn’t date.
I’m also 70+ and live in the North West…
Each to their own eh?

Salita · 16/02/2025 19:08

Dolce & Gabbana, Miu Miu jackets even Hermes Birkins! Plenty of Balenciaga & Balmain still knocking about. I’m still in my trusty 10 year old Barbour until warmer days. I’m in Dulwich Village.

lentilbake16 · 16/02/2025 19:12

One and half thousand pounds on a bag. Nice

Deeperthantheocean · 16/02/2025 19:14

Not really, or that I've paid much attention. Some come in crocs, some in trainers, boots. For me it's work attire or whatever I'm going to wear for the day. I don't care enough to observe lol 😆

Stroud or Hebden Bridge??

Bootle?

Catterpillarsflipflops · 16/02/2025 19:15

I've just had to Google Vejas! Clearly I'm out of touch.

I live in a wax jacket and boots sort of place.

Lip fillers and hair extensions where I am 🤣

West London?

I’m struggling to see any connection between Hampstead, Mill Hill and Radlett.

All very much north west london suburbs. Whilst Radlett is outside north west london, it is very much part of the same friend groups and demographics.

perhaps the fact that they have high population of secular Jews is a strong link.

was only an example, but my friends across all those areas dress how I described.

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Totnes or Newport? Or possibly Hebden Bridge.

cornflakecrunchie · 16/02/2025 19:22

My mum once told me that her friend had said that everyone dressed like refugees these days. Once you start really observing, I think she was right!
(older, no tattoos, no vejas, no pouty lips, no balayage - I like to be different!)

Thegreatestdancer · 16/02/2025 19:23

No wide leg jeans?

How quaint to dress like a refugee! What fun!

Crayfishforyou · 16/02/2025 19:25

Yorkshire here!
It was a bit of a mix at DD’s school and everyone dresses differently. There are a few puffa coat things and skinny jeans.
Last summer I noticed nearly all of the mums of dd’s class had exactly the same saltwater sandals in different colours.

In my head, I see those as very different places, with very distinct (extremely dissimilar) vibes and demographics. Maybe that’s what pp meant?

Loads of Lululemon here.

I have just turned 50 and have never worn crocs, UGGs, Birkenstocks, Converse, puffer jackets or sportswear as daywear, so am unlikely to change my habits now ;-)

Peachperfect · 16/02/2025 19:36

I see alot of sleeveless long puffa's with jumper underneath and jeans with boots or trainers. I tend to go for the warm option of a smart hooded tracksuit and sleeveless puffa (covers a multitude of sins without getting too hot!) Or a long sweatshirt/hoodie with leggings, scrunch socks and smart trainers. As long as I'm comfortable, clean and warm on these horrible cold mornings, that's all that matters. Strange how different areas have different trends (I'm in Essex)

somewhereinsuburbia · 15/02/2025 21:26

Not Brighton, Cambridge or Edinburgh. Bristol. There is quite a look. I love being alternative by wearing a Primark black coat and knock off uggs.

No way? What part of Bristol? Guessing Easton?

Gosh. I didn’t start this thread to be critical, but I have to agree with you - that does sound like quite the look.

It’s how you can tell how old women are apparently - can’t believe you haven’t seen the memes - google it….

Maybe Redland, Cotham, St Werburgh’s?

Yesss, I forgot about the long sleeveless puffer.
Don't get that one. It's so cold I need a long parka but my arms are fine? 🤔
