Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Yes definitely at my daughter’s school.

leggings, trainers or the Ugg style mule shoes, crew socks, baggy sweatshirts with a sleeveless duvet coat on the top. And of course hair in a messy bun.

The ladies that wear their own style with confidence always stand out , they often wear stylish and timeless clothes without following fashion . I applaud and admire them .

TrainGame · 16/02/2025 20:31

The crew sock length is so terribly 'millenial'!

As a gen Xer, I wouldn't be seen dead in that length and no doubt the gen Zers' are in agreement.

You have thrown down the gauntlet millenials. I request a duel at dawn for the battle of sock lengths!

As a pre-Wimbledonite, things have moved on OP. There were certainly no Mulberry bags around 10 years ago. Things must have seriously stepped up a notch or 100.

I agree, get yourself to Camden Market and pick up something no one else has!

Probably these https://conkershoes.com/product/buckle-shoe/ if it's anything like where I live, which it sounds like.

These are beyond hideous

I’m not sure Camden Market is the place for originality any more 😞

In my head, I see those as very different places, with very distinct (extremely dissimilar) vibes and demographics. Maybe that’s what pp meant?

Yes, that’s what I meant.

Dry robes + their daughters in matching dry robe. Never been anywhere near water 😂

Yorkshire.

Vega trainers. Straight leg jeans. Long puffer coats that look like sleeping bags. Uniqlo cross body bag.

Utterly depressing.

I do wonder what part of Yorkshire you are in, they don't dress like that near me, in Yorkshire.

SeenYourArse · 16/02/2025 21:16

Wealthy small NW town, athleisure here! Outifits of matching colour wide leg trousers and tops, sports leggings with sports socks and sweatshirts, oversized fleece pullovers mostly Adanola brand. Trainers are mostly New Balance with the odd designer brand like Balenciaga or Gucci thrown in. Lots of (designer brand) long puffer coats in black or stone/cream/beige.

AndThereSheGoes · 16/02/2025 21:24

Hampshire.
Younger mums in (expensive) athleisure or the long puffer/ socks trainers.
Secondary school mums in cool jeans, woolly hats, nice jumpers.
Older mums of young adults in fashionable/ individual styles of clothes. They seem to have all the money and style round here.

Yes school run is split into the stylish lot with pure white socks with trainers crocs and long north face coats and sunglasses even in rain wtf then there's the I'm wearing my pj fleece under my tesco coat lot... its very clickey at my school and I normally just stand alone right at the back.

Sorry, but nothing stylish about leggings, big white socks, puffy jacket and crocs. A trend for the moment? Yup,
but stylish? Nope.

and that’s not meant as an insult who wears them: they are practical for the school run… not for the catwalk

sinus · 16/02/2025 21:31

Here it's a mix of long coats; formal wool, puffy, or dry robe-type coats. All coats paired with jeans (all types), or narrow trousers.
Shoes casual - gazelle, converse, or veja. No ugg boots, but some, few, clogs.

In my experience the long socks over gym leggings used to be popular with the younger people at the gym, but I don't see much of that recently, and it seems to have since become more generally fashionable.

Veja became really popular a few years ago (I used to have a couple of pairs!) but I still see them everywhere. Usually people my age and older (middle aged crowd).

mdinbc · 16/02/2025 21:31

Canada west coast... lululemon leggings, sweatshirt of some sort, usually with a gym or craft brewery logo, long puffa sleeveless, birk sandals with socks, or if it's really raining, Blundstones.

I'm past school age mum, I'm a gran, but this is what I see mums wearing.

Definitely. Be your own woman…it’s easy to put your own stamp on things and have a style of your own. Fashion comes and goes but style is individual and timeless.

Uniform is….meh

Flossy1985 · 16/02/2025 21:45

New mum here almost 40 and being a rock chick my dress code is always skinny jeans (black) band t or something girlie, leather jacket and docs. I will not join the masses ever!!!! 😅

DroopyEyelids · 16/02/2025 21:56

Whatever is clean and fits. Usually jeans, black or white trainers, a teeshirt and a jumper. Either my old winter coat or my old summer coat. Even then, clean is a scale not a binary choice. And the weather plays an important role. No one bothers about that stuff here, in a commuting village/suburb to Glasgow. I can recognise a lot of these styles from various mums at my toddler group. Everyone wears a backpack or a changing bag backpack though. I have never seen a handbag at a toddler or baby group ever. That’s mental. If it rocks your boat then go for it I suppose. Imagine having to lug around a fancy handbag full of nappies, wipes, nappy bags, sudo cream, spare clothes, toy of the week, your own crap, water and an assortment of snacks. On one shoulder. While you push a heavy pram. I just can’t see a situation where that effort sounds worth it.

sinus · 16/02/2025 22:05

And the gym wear too, but they are clearly on their way to or from a gym or exercise classes.

Bellaboot · 16/02/2025 22:05

Anything goes here in a very naice part of north Surrey. I drop off in active wear as I teach in it and then sometimes get changed to wide jeans, trousers with layered tops and R&B flatform trainers. Always with a long woollen trench coat in black or camel, unless it's raining and then a waterproof puffer.

Definitely no uniform around here and many have stopped the high white socks thing.

BreezyScroller · 16/02/2025 21:02

Water in this context means river, swimming pool, lake etc as you probably are aware. Do you have a dry robe by any chance ?

GlimmerOfGold · 16/02/2025 22:29

A male friend has started wearing a bright green dry robe over his City suit. He is an investment banker. It looks kind of odd. He has put on a lot of weight in the last year and I wonder if he is trying to hide his size.

Yellowrosessmellpetaly · 16/02/2025 22:59

Hurried make up, damp hair, big scarf, beanie and parka worn rushing past looking late for a train mainly here in South London.

This sounds like the perfect uniform and I own much of it already! I live ten minutes from OP but good to know my mum tribe is waiting for me in Canada West Coast.

I always love the outfits on the Canadian show ‘Working Moms’ too…
