Grey hair wobble

It's almost two years since I've dyed my hair. It was always a test to see if dyeing damage is why it's not growing well. The condition is definitely better than it was but not smooth like I'd hoped.

My daughter has said she doesn't like it. She is 7 so I'm not going to run and buy dye ASAP. However I've been having a wobble anyway so really stuck on what to do. My sister is a hairdresser and says some people are wanting to go grey early now and says my natural colour is lovely. My husband says I look great whatever colour is but I don't know if this is just because he's a nice guy 😂

I've been wearing some vintage style trousers and tops recently and feel like it doesn't work with grey hair and that's saddened me too. Should I be trying to wear modern styles to outweigh the grey hair.

I know it's my own decision but wondering anyway in late thirties in same boat?

I started going grey at 19, I’m now 42, do I look older than that? Honestly, maybe, but I’d argue that’s more about the lines on my face rather than the colour of my hair. For me deciding to stop dying (almost 5 years ago now) was about releasing myself from the sadness and disappointment I would feel mere days after a fresh dye job and seeing the white coming through again already. At least the look I have now appears deliberate rather than ‘oh she can’t be bothered to dye her hair and take care of herself’. If I am honest I do sometimes wonder about starting to dye again but I know I would hate that hamster wheel again very quickly. I always get the nicest compliments about the colour of my hair and aye maybe it’s friends and family blowing smoke up my arse but I also do rather embarrassingly get stopped whilst out and about by strangers which seems odd if it’s just to lie to me 😂

Looks fabulous.

I used to be a "will never stop dyeing my hair" person - on here as well. And then lockdown gave me the space to stop dyeing and see what was happening. My most honest critics are my kids and both only have positive things to say. One keeps showing me a photo of my hair during Christmas 2019 to remind me that my hair just looked wrong. I think it's the change people find hard to cope with and relinquishing their perception of their younger self. It's so liberating not checking your roots a week after dyeing though.

onwardsup4 · 17/02/2025 18:06

@suburburban about 2 months before noticeable greys start coming through. Colouring my roots every 6/8 weeks is a small price to pay to look and feel so much better. Only speaking for myself though obviously

suburburban · 17/02/2025 18:53

Yes it's fair enough

I did it for a long time but then eventually the roots got worse and the colouring times moved closer

janispoplin · 18/02/2025 10:30

@DreamloverTealover your hair is a similar colour to mine. I'm 10yrs older than you but have been fighting against grey hair for nearly 30yrs. Like some of the PPs I finally got sick of dying my hair then seeing roots 1-2 weeks later.
I'd much rather have my dark hair back. I loved my dark hair. But I detested the white stripe that would appear in what felt like mere days since I'd paid good money to cover it up.
I'm embracing my grey as much as I can. I'm really happy that it's so much more common now. I don't like to think that I care too much about what others think but I do, most of us do in truth. Allowing grey to grow out is now "socially acceptable". Ridiculous that it's taken this long when "silver foxes" have been accepted for years.
I love clothes and styling myself. Going grey doesn't mean I've given up. It's just one less thing to worry about.
When I find myself hovering over the hair dyes in Superdrug I remind myself how long it took to get rid of all the brown dye I'd been using over the years and finally embracing the grey. I'll never dye my hair again.

BoldAmberDuck · 18/02/2025 12:25

I think I will never stop dyeing my hair! The trendy young people with grey hair look great because they’re young but I think once you get older and your body changes shape and you develop wrinkles, then grey hair is the final ageing thing. Good on those that have the confidence to do this but to me it just looks terribly aging

Cocolapew · 18/02/2025 12:40

Op your hair looks great! When I went grey it was very short and I had a lot of dark patches, they looked better once I grew it.
If I were you I'd get highlights on top and tone them to match your hair. It will eventually lighten up and you can leave it.

PuzzleMix · 18/02/2025 12:50

I love natural grey hair - everyone on this thread looks fab! I hate the pressure on women to stay 'looking young' by dyeing their hair forever. I used to colour my hair, but got sick of the cost and grey roots showing after a couple of weeks. I grew it out during lockdown. I really object to men being called silver foxes if they are grey, but women being told they've let themselves go! Also this idea that it ages you - we really need to deal with what the issue is with looking our age/older.

Here's mine at the beginning, short, you can see the dark bits at the top/back then as it naturally lightens.
I love it tbh.

I'd be willing to bet that the grey hair naysayers are a combination of
A young
B not grey
C blonde enough that grey doesn't register.

Not sure if I'm a naysayer or just not understanding! I'm mid 50s, roots almost all silver, and originally dark brown. I don't want my hair to be grey because it ages me so much. I do think it can look great and I absolutely agree that women don't have to worry about meeting men's expectations of looking forever youthful. But on the other hand I personally like to look younger and I'm not ready to let go of the hair colour that's part of my identity. It's personal choice.

Nope.

I just think it's not for me. I like some of the photos shared on here but imo they would all look ten years younger if they weren't grey. That's absolutely fine for other people but I still feel young and want to look it. No growing old gracefully for me. I love the magic of Botox and light fillers.

Nah. I wouldn’t look 39 with darker (my original) hair.

no am not mid 40s. roots start to grow after 2 or 3 weeks plus my cruella streak shows after a month. I detest my grey hair. I can cope with my fine lines showing etc. my hair is down to my bra strap. long thick hair that can be worn curly or straight. in fab condition but it won't be gray for a long long time

RitaFromTheRanch · 18/02/2025 21:58

@GreyRooted I meant ten years younger than the grey makes people look. I usually think it's adds ten years.

I’m 49. So, based on that you either think I look 59 now with grey hair or if I changed my hair colour I’d look 39. None of which I think are true.

I actually think it adds more than 10 years sometimes, as said in one of my post above, at family funerals and weddings etc people who haven't seen me in years often mistake me for my sis in law daughter - she is only 10 years older but i do feel her hair which is like witches grey hair really ages her, For our wedding a few years ago she did put a semi permanent wash over it and it was a beautiful coppery reddish brown colour with an unreal shine ( she wasn't asked by any of us to do this by the way she did it off her own back). It really lifted her face and made her eyes shine, she got loads of compliments on it all through the day i heard. Some people can pull it off but i do feel others cant

DreamloverTealover · 19/02/2025 10:23

@Wexone or anyone - what kind of semi permanent wash? Like not a dye but a wash out thing? Thanks.

I think it was a temporary toner she got it done in the hairdressers the day before. It was fabulouse

Try toning drops. I use Jerome Russell via Amazon. Shrine are rated by Sali Hughes. You just mix a few drops with your shampoo or conditioner and leave for 5 minutes. I'm brunette with silver coming through and I use a 'bronde' shade to help with a slightly more cohesive look.

Nannyfannybanny · 19/02/2025 10:40

I was a natural blonde, the front of my hair went pure white. I used to have lowlights put in. During lockdown,no hairdresser,my DD whom I had at 41 is my biggest critic. I asked her if it made me look old. Her reply " mate, I would kill for hair that colour". Here in the SE a lot of young people, even 20s are having their hair white. I had to change my clothes colour. I've had skin cancer so am very pale. After the lockdowns Finnished, I reverted to lo lights, keeping some of the white,so it doesn't look blatantly false. I had a cousin died last year,97 dark Auburn, not a single grey hair. The pictures, ladies are gorgeous.

@Sparkletastic this looks good for days I'm going "out out" I am seriously considering buying. Scared! But interested.

One thing, don't go for a short back and sides,,! That's aging,I'm 74 and keep my hair shoulder length, again DD (both of them) they hate my hair short. Trying to think of the actress Julie Hersmond something, same age as my oldest DD age,54, the pudding basin hair cut ages her.

RitaFromTheRanch · 19/02/2025 20:45

@GreyRooted You're very pretty and yes I do think you'd look 49 if you didn't have grey hair. That's what I meant, so it's true in my opinion.

I’m confused. I am 49. So if I look 49 with non grey hair, then I don’t look 10 years older with grey. Unless of course you think I look 59 in my picture. Which you’re entitled to think of course, but I don’t usually get mistaken for a nearly 60 year old.
