Grey hair wobble

DreamloverTealover · 13/02/2025 16:17

It's almost two years since I've dyed my hair. It was always a test to see if dyeing damage is why it's not growing well. The condition is definitely better than it was but not smooth like I'd hoped.

My daughter has said she doesn't like it. She is 7 so I'm not going to run and buy dye ASAP. However I've been having a wobble anyway so really stuck on what to do. My sister is a hairdresser and says some people are wanting to go grey early now and says my natural colour is lovely. My husband says I look great whatever colour is but I don't know if this is just because he's a nice guy 😂

I've been wearing some vintage style trousers and tops recently and feel like it doesn't work with grey hair and that's saddened me too. Should I be trying to wear modern styles to outweigh the grey hair.

I know it's my own decision but wondering anyway in late thirties in same boat?

@DreamloverTealover Your hair is a LOVELY colour. Why would you even consider dying it?!

Thank you. Because it's underneath is a bit more grey and my hair is just a mis match of colour all over I feel.

I quite like mine grey - and it's in much better condition than when I was still dying it. I've (rather freakily) blanked out my face - but this is mine.

Yours is very similar to mine!

I now have some baby highlights to blend the grey/white coming through with the blonde, but some toner underneath and in the ends to add interest

It's like a reverse balayage, so the roots are nowhere near as obvious now coming through. (Was previously dark roots, blonder ends, so just switched it)

That sounds lovely, do you have any photos or an example online I could see?

Is that it completely grown out? Sorry if you’ve already said. I ask because the roots look silvery so maybe they’ll come through more. I use a purple shampoo once a week to lift yellowing from straighteners.

It looks like it’s in lovely condition though so I’d stick with it.

I'm not sure as it's been two years and I've had it cut chin length twice in that time. It really is a random selection of colour.

I'm older, 54 and have been grey quite a while. I found that going from very dark brown to silvery grey with pale skin meant I lost contrast. This was what was making me look washed out. I do wear very minimal make-up, but certain colours really make up for the contrast eg burgundy, dark green, navy - I have very cool colouring, so different colours might work on someone else. Also, a colour correcting shampoo is great. I like Jean Paul Myne Grey Pepper or Black Poppy Seed shampoo. It's a big change and a wobble is normal!

SonK · 14/02/2025 17:53

I'm 31 and have quite noticeable greys (more than what is considered normal), especially at the front.

I just left it initially and I got a lot of compliments. It grew on me as I never dyed it.

However I dyed my hair two years ago and now that I see the difference, ( I look younger and more put together) I prefer to dye it.

Sometimes I go 4 months without dying it because I don't care what it looks like and would like to take care of my hair / restore it's healthy.

I don't really care what people think usually, and I have jet black hair so it is very noticeable.

However sometimes it gets me down when I see 'perfect hair' everywhere

Just do what you want to do. If you like it grey, then keep it that way, if it's bothering you simply dye it.

Also, when it comes to greying us ladies always care what others think and how they see us however, when I think about it, I have never once looked at an woman of any age and thought "oh gosh, look grey hair". In fact I have never noticed grey hair on others, just their lovely hair

I m sure everyone else is the same : )

I'm 55 and have embraced childlike freedom. When you're a young kid, you don't worry about what your hair or face look like. If you have any opinion on clothes, it's that you want to wear something fun.

I have spent decades fretting over how I look. Sure I look older with grey hair, but do I care that it makes me look 55 or even older, instead of maybe 50 at a push? What's the difference? Really.

So I'm always clean and tidy but beyond that I just don't care. I wear things that I like. Sometimes I use make up on a whim, more often I dont. And am fine with my grey hair.

bigkahunaburger · 14/02/2025 18:04

i feel like im super weird because Im 50 - redhead - and not a whiff of grey and Im absolutely gutted. My mum is redhead too and mid 70s and no sign either. I know most people would love that, but I think grey hair is absolutely gorgeous. I have long curly, wild hair, and I think when it goes grey that look looks awesome. IF it happens to me (which Im doubtful cos of my mum) I will be thrilled. Grey hair is so utterly beautiful.

Ooooh I love this so much. I read somewhere about someone who didnt even care about what flattered them. The whole concept of 'slimming' 'flattering' is daft if you think about it. Just wear what makes you feel fab. I love that idea of going back to what made you feel great as a kid. I used to love wearing dungarees ( I still wear these all the time), and some dresses. I never thought about whether something was flattering fgs.

Lately I have been loving being in baggy oversized tracksuits.

DreamloverTealover · 14/02/2025 16:55

Having read a lot of you saying about colouring and blending, I'm going to look into this, Google and Pinterest!

I was always dark haired, my eyebrows still quite dark and no greys coming in there yet. I don't think I can go back to dark hair so either blending or looking at a light brown, dark blonde box dye to hope it doesn't look too dark?

I tried this, hoping for blondish highlights ( lightest brown semi permanent) and I thought it worked, but it didn't really. It's really noticeable growing out.

RitaFromTheRanch · 14/02/2025 18:11

@DreamloverTealover I think that colour would look great with some baby blonde highlights

TreesAtSea · 14/02/2025 18:21

I mentioned my own wobble and gave seeing myself in changing room mirrors as an example.
Well, I thought of this thread today. The sun shone for the first time in ages and I found a lovely jacket in a charity shop. Tried it on and thought how lovely my silver hair looked and wondered why I'd considered dyeing it again!
Just goes to show how circumstances can change self-perception.

PP is right to mention a change in clothing colours might be necessary if your hair colour changes dramatically. I used to look okay in most colours, though some naturally suited me more. Now very few look good and some, white/pastels/anything light or cool-toned really, make me look like I've been dug up. So I do have a more streamlined wardrobe but I also feel I know much better what suits me. I don't really like makeup so wear very little, but agree that it adds definition. Fortunately my eyebrows are still brown.

I tend to agree with another PP that the stress of dealing with roots every few weeks is greater than that of being grey-haired. If I did dye again I'd go for a light rather than dark brown, but even so dye build-up is hard to avoid in my experience.
The recommendation of L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss is one I'd echo though. I used it for over 25 years and it really does leave hair in tip-top condition.

Good luck with whatever you choose. By the way, your hair looks lovely!

I'm late 50s so much older than you, OP, but I'm having a similar wobble. I stopped dyeing my hair dark brown three years ago and was initially really pleased with my natural white/grey which is around 90% coverage.
But it often now irritates me. I don't mind it so much when looking in the mirror at home, but if I see myself in say a changing room mirror or in photos, it's another story. The novelty has definitely worn off.

I think it's true that to carry off grey hair "successfully" a slightly sharper, edgier look is required, both in terms of hair cut but also clothes/accessories. I don't know if that's even more true, or less so, if you're relatively young. So that's what I'm trying to do first to see if I feel better, rather than rushing into colouring it again, since growing the dye out previously was such a faff.

I'm 60 and stopped dyeing mine at 58. Tbh, it was a relief.

However, I agree it required a reassessment of my style, and for a little bit I toyed with the idea of streaked or dipped coloured dyes, but I didn't go through with that yet. I decided to change my clothing style a little for the time being, but especially to pay attention to my footwear and bags. I also got my ears double pierced. One of my DDs suggested a nose piercing but the thought of that gave me the heebiejeebies.

My hair is shoulder-length and layered, but I've been considering a pixie cut, or at least a short back and sides/ longer on top style.

One thing I found was that I needed to look again at the colours I normally wear - the dark colours still suit me but the odd pastel I had didn't work the same with the different hair colour, and they made me look older.

Regardless of what I wear, posture is really important to the overall look.

mathanxiety · 14/02/2025 18:57

It also required a reassessment of my makeup.

I use a brighter lipstick now, and make sure my eyebrows are done every day (not slug brows, but shaped and visible). I also wear blush applied according to instructions from my DDs - putting it in the wrong spot can mark you as a contemporary of Miss Marple, I have been told... Up to date eye looks are also de rigeur.

DanishPastry45 · 14/02/2025 19:05

I last dyed my hair in December 2018 - it was 'over-blonde' after 20-odd years of highlights, and grows so quickly, after 2 weeks I'd have a noticeable stripe down the middle.

It took a good 3 years to fully grow out and now it is glorious - thick, healthy, and a multitude of different shades - it looks very expensively highlighted (most of the time!).

To prevent feeling aged (I'm 45) I've had it cut in an asymmetrical style, and I also have an undercut, but that's because it's very thick and I want to take the bulk out. Plus it looks cool as fuck. I love love love it. I must get at least 3 strangers a week telling me how much they love it too... In fact, the only people who actively expressed dislike for it were 2 men of 65+, both with grey hair....(I think they were a little jealous).

And... what's wrong with looking older? More experienced? Senior, mature?

My hair is grey and I hate this assumption fed to us by society that old = bad and washed up and useless, and old female = even worse.

I don’t feel like that at all. I just prefer to have blonde hair. It suits me.
Even when I’ve not had my hair done for months, I don’t have much discernible grey.
It’ll be a cold day in hell before I go all grey, however.
I don’t want to look senior or mature.

Manthide · 15/02/2025 19:16

I was 42 when I had my youngest dc and my eldest 2 were 14 and 16. At the time I didn't dye my hair and was planning on aging gracefully. They were worried I'd be mistaken for dd3's gm if I didn't colour my hair and so I have been doing it ever since. She's 18 at the end of December and I'm thinking if it's almost the time to stop. I can't imagine myself grey/white though!

Dm was a redhead and even aged 82 her hair is not as grey as mine would be if I didn't dye it. She recently had a hospital procedure and it wasn't successful because she wasn't sedated enough. I told her they didn't realise she was a true redhead and needed stronger sedation. She went in again and this time they did give her stronger anaesthetic and she was okay.

Wexone · 15/02/2025 19:34

I think only certain people can pull it off like Meryl Street in the devil wears prada. I think it alos requires some changes in make up and clothes colours and you need to keep it in best condition. Grey hair is more porous. I have a few greys and unfortunately on patch that grows like a cruella streak due to a scar on my head. my hairdreswr is excellent a blended it in and the regrowth is not harsh. I think it ages you badly. mu sister in law has witches like grey hair , she is only 10 years older than me but at every funeral large family gathering distant relatives will always assume I am her daughter. And other people have also commented they think she is about 10 years older than she is. 🙈 going to the hairdresser and getting my hair colored is a treat I love the shine and gloss after. I will be dying my hair until I am 100 - if I live that long 🤣

JillMW · 15/02/2025 19:37

Dyed hair is very ageing, it is a totally different texture.
