When you see quirky fashion on 50+ women do you think saddo or wowzers

Or neither?

I'm 56 and really want a Rocket St George bomber jacket. Mutton dressed up as mutton?

I look at some of my friends in their 50s/60s who wear Toast and Cos and they look super-stylish and classy but that's just not me. Does it look a bit try-hard to wear stuff that's a bit out there?

I don't know what's made me ask really - I usually don't care but maybe it's bc I've changed jobs recently and am meeting a lot of new people. Im thinking what their first impression of me might be.

OP posts:

Ooh I like that, considering buying it. I overdress every day and only embraced this last year after my nervous breakdown. I wear dresses only and have quite a grunge/gothic style but pair it with bright trainers or docs, I'm 40 and couldn't care less what people think. I probably own most dresses from a certain brand.

I wear mad clothes all the time. I love volume and colour and am usually overdressed for the occasion. Tilda Swinton once stopped me in the street to say how much she loved my outfit which may or may not be a compliment, depending on your pov!

Wow! Amazing compliment!

I don't obsess about fashion but I always have an image in my head I want to project - none of which is ever "sensible, invisible middle aged woman".

I did rather leave a colleague non plussed last week when he complemented my outfit - grey flannel high waisted, wide leg trousers, brogues, statememt necklace and an eau de nil knitted wrap jacket and I replied "thank you, I was aiming for posh 1930s lesbian".

I love this so much!

Ravensperch · 11/02/2025 13:52

Giggorata. I’ve just had a whizz through some of the Advanced Style site. Thanks for recommending it. Some really inspirational pics and style. It does seem a minimum of 1, but preferably 2, dogs, is a requirement 😀

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/02/2025 13:54

I also recently bought a jumper from Sainsbiry's cos it had "1980s glam nana vibes". I am so not an elegant capsule wardrobe person.

I'm "fifty plus" now and I give no fucks what people think. I get ridiculously excited by mad looking trainers. Sometimes I clock myself I a mirror and wonder if I look a bit crackers...and then I shrug and enjoy my silly shoes or bright colours or whatever it is.

Middle age has to be good for something. I think menopause is a gift for not giving a toss!

If you love it then buy it!

I like that brand. Nearly bought a chair but still undecided.

Are you me? 😂👍

Bababear987 · 11/02/2025 14:01

Love it! I always admire women how dress out there although I do think you need confidence and a certain body shape to pull it off

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 11/02/2025 14:02

I don't think anything tbh.
I am probably far too disinterested in people tbh 😁

Indeed some people do. I know a woman who dresses solely in varying shades of grey. She has the most amazing grey hair and to me looks fucking awesome every time I see her. She oozes style.

I'm not talking about women like that. I like people watching and the monotony of dull colours that abound is depressing. Women wearing the dullest of clothes just because dull clothes are the norm, or because they feel they should be wearing these colours, or because people might judge them if they wear something more interesting.

This thread was started because the OP wanted to buy an amazing jacket but didn't feel confident about it.

I dearly wish more women dressed in stuff that excited them.

Those women might find vibrancy in other aspects of their lives.

lucindalucinsa · 11/02/2025 14:07

65 here and just bought it.

thestudio · 11/02/2025 14:07

Agree with a PP -the only time I (shamefully, because it's so misogynistic) think 'mutton' is if I see older women wearing very performatively 'feminine' and usually therefore sexualised clothes - high heels, low cut, 'man-facing' clothing.

Anything that indicates a fuck you all attitude I applaud. I'm not a very colourful person but I wear the same slightly edgy, for want of a better word, look I always have.

The only thing I hate is that fucking poem about wearing purple because I despise whimsy in all its forms, and particularly hate purple.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/02/2025 14:17

I wear bright clothes, mad clothes all the time. I don't have any sort of standard look.

I am happy to wear a plain Toast-ish dress with crazy accessories, weird drop crotch pants with trainers, sequins constantly.

I've been watching way too many Trinny videos recently and I'm wearing a sequin vest over every pale jumper and yesterday I wore a corset over a white shirt Grin

FishPie2 · 11/02/2025 14:26

Wish I had the money to dress like the late Iris Apfel - loved her style.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 11/02/2025 16:26

Yes I’m 46 and want the one with hearts on. I also want the jumper with the leopards on (think they are leopards). This isn’t quirky as such. Quirky would be popsy.

lifeonmars100 · 11/02/2025 17:47

I know the one you mean, it caught my eye and I thought it was fab. Buy it and enjoy wearing it. I think people should wear what they want. I must admit I have toned things down as I have got older with plainer clothes but still like colour and striking accessories.

There is a pub in the city I live in which is always full of older people drinking at all hours of the day, karaoke kicks off at 11am and there are always customers outside having a fag and getting more animated as the day wears on. The women do seem to follow the dark fake tan, short hem line, low neckline, high heels, full face of make up aesthetic. They are not in the springtime of life but when I see them I think they are probably having a better time than some others in that age group.

I love seeing women in quirky outfits and it usually looks great. On men not so much ...

Yes this is absolutely a fair point.

I meant more that I don't like that look on anyone - young or old - because of what it signifies about how women are generally viewed, and a kind of individual submission to the general objectification and commodification of women (and the encouragement of their own collusion in that commodification through consumption).

But I agree that there is a class aspect to the whole thing which - as with so much in life - makes any black and white analysis pretty suspect.

And some would argue that the refusal to disavow sexually 'provocative' clothes once they reach a certain age is a radical act...

Intersectionality innit.

oh I dont know. I love a man who is confident enough to wear whatever he wants. Dress over the top, wear womens clothes and make up, whatever, as long as you have the style to pull it off!
No reason heels and lipstick should be for girls only (it never used to be!).😀

I think older women are precisely the ones who experiment more and dress quirky. As PPs have stated its just that stage in your life when you are confident in yourself and no long give a f**k about anybody elses opinion!

Dressing the same as everybody else is boring, surely?

I’m not a capsule wardrobe person either 😆

I love quirky clothes. Sometimes I feel quite casual or even (occasionally) classic, but I love adding a twist somewhere, in the accessories or a fabulous print on some part of the outfit. Life is way too short not to wear the beautiful, joy-sparking clothes.

thestepmumspacepodcast · 11/02/2025 19:34

I'm always impressed by people who dress boldly!

I was staring at a mid 50s woman in the supermarket the other week thinking how fab she looked and how her big pink shaggy coat made me feel happy just looking at it. She looked at me, as if to say "what are you looking at lady?" (I hadn't realised I was staring!) and in a split second I had to decide whether to smile or tell her that I was thinking how awesome she looked.

I decided to tell her, worried I'd sound like a right weirdo but fortunately she was v happy and we had a lovely old chat about how bloomin boring most of our wardrobes are!

Go for it! If it makes you feel good then stuff what other people's opinions on your wardobe are!

I love to see stylish older men too. These guys stood out for me on the advanced style site a pp linked upthread. I’ve been dipping in as there’s a lot of pics on it but I loved these

That is EXACTLY how I would describe the people I see walking about!!!!!

Like a terrible film with an extreme washed out filter.

What I notice when I go to town is that almost everyone is wearing a variation of a black quilted jacket or coat. Almost everyone, regardless of age or gender. It is almost like a uniform, I was a bit bored on the bus so I counted how many black quilted outer wear garments there were, it was around 30!

BackInFive · 11/02/2025 20:50

Get it!
I don’t think it’s that ‘out there’ at all.
As long as you feel good wearing it, that’s all that matters. If you wear something you don’t feel good in, it shows.
