Or neither?

I'm 56 and really want a Rocket St George bomber jacket. Mutton dressed up as mutton?

I look at some of my friends in their 50s/60s who wear Toast and Cos and they look super-stylish and classy but that's just not me. Does it look a bit try-hard to wear stuff that's a bit out there?

I don't know what's made me ask really - I usually don't care but maybe it's bc I've changed jobs recently and am meeting a lot of new people. Im thinking what their first impression of me might be.

OP posts:

I wear mad clothes all the time. I love volume and colour and am usually overdressed for the occasion. Tilda Swinton once stopped me in the street to say how much she loved my outfit which may or may not be a compliment, depending on your pov!

This is the best anecdote ever! You win the thread 😀.

(Enjoy your new jacket OP. Maybe you’ll bump into Tilda!)

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/02/2025 10:33

I'm 47 and this is my current favourite cardigan -

I will go down fighting against the expectation of beige waterfall cardies.

I hope it was one of the sheer ones!

(Mind you, the only time I met TS, she was dressed like the late queen walking her corgis for a walk — and still looked fabulous…)

You talk like most people bump into Tilda on a regular basis! 😂

I had a friend who lived near her, and friend’s father and TS’s father were in the same hospital ward at one point while I was visiting. Ages ago.

SnoopysHoose · 11/02/2025 10:37

@Ginmonkeyagain
I hope you buy that!!
Waterfall cardi 🤣
There's a thread about a dress for a christening and the replies that didn't like the OPs dress were awful; it's attention seeking, dress in a sack for church, jeans n tshirt.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/02/2025 10:48

Oh I bought it 😀 I wear it to work on days that need a bit of extra leopard energy

LilacPony · 11/02/2025 10:11

It’s not about what people wear, it’s how they wear it. Wear it with confidence and I’ll always think “wow”. I dont personally believe in fashion, but people having a style. Enjoy wearing it and you’ll look great!! Have confidence in your preferences and buy it today!

This. I wear what I like a lot of the time, if I am in the right mood.
I'm looking forward to days where dry, warm and comfortable isn't my first priority. Grin I'm not going to get dressed up to walk to the supermarket in the drizzle but I'd probably enjoy it more.

The late queen walking the corgis is going to be my new look, but with a hat not a headscarf.

I just looked it up as I hadn’t heard of the brand .
Next has one “ ecru mono lips 💋 “ I really quite like that !
You would probably need to wear fairly plain items under it ?
black , cream , denim ?
I think quirky is a great look on any age .
Some looks don’t look good on a variety of ages but this does .
PS I’m not a confident person / dresser eg my summer wardrobe mostly linen wider leg or straight leg trousers with sneakers and little tops / t shirts some from Sugarhill Brighton some are just plain Breton tops

Correction, you would probably need to wear whatever the fuck you like under it.

I love seeing men and women of all ages dressed with personality. So many people shrink and hide with age, I love seeing women who are full of life.

Yes this!!

TwentyKittens · 11/02/2025 11:29

Zusammengebrochen · 11/02/2025 05:56

Some people like those colours - it doesn't make them dull just because they're not parading around in neon or pastels. I love greens, teals, pinks, and denim blue these days but I don't judge others who feel or look better in other shades.

Indeed some people do. I know a woman who dresses solely in varying shades of grey. She has the most amazing grey hair and to me looks fucking awesome every time I see her. She oozes style.

I'm not talking about women like that. I like people watching and the monotony of dull colours that abound is depressing. Women wearing the dullest of clothes just because dull clothes are the norm, or because they feel they should be wearing these colours, or because people might judge them if they wear something more interesting.

This thread was started because the OP wanted to buy an amazing jacket but didn't feel confident about it.

I dearly wish more women dressed in stuff that excited them.

Rainbowdeer · 11/02/2025 11:41

I love to see quirky dressing at any age

2JFDIYOLO · 11/02/2025 11:45

Some years ago I took a fixed term contract at a financial place in London.

I looked at the younger women - black, grey, navy, nude tones, serious shoes. 'I'm sensible, fit in.'

I looked at the older women (team leaders, heads of, contractors with their own businesses) - fabulous jackets, statement jewellery, pashminas, sexy shoes. 'Look and listen - I have something to SAY'.

Then I looked at the way older women are 'supposed to look'. Grey, beige, comfy shoes, macs, slacks and florals.

Thing is - whichever one you feel best in - WEAR that.

Emptyflames · 11/02/2025 11:48

chaiformeplease · 10/02/2025 12:26

One of the velvet ones with embroidered hearts? Get it bought dear girl, and enjoy it...it'll make you feel fabulous and that's the entire point of it!

I'm a similar age to you, just emerging from a few difficult years and am definitely embracing braver styles and what that does for my confidence. Go for it!

That's a lovely message

I dont look at age on ridiculous fashions, but I'll judge based on how ridiculous you look, for example Will & Jada son, with a house on his head, fucking ridiculous. You in a jacket, meh not so much

Meganssweatycrotch · 11/02/2025 12:24

Check out ‘a woman called George’ on insta. She’s very cool 😎

Ravensperch · 11/02/2025 12:27

I dip in to a channel on YouTube - karenbritchick. She can be a bit too manic in delivery for me sometimes but I have watched all her what people are wearing in New York vids. She did winter, spring, summer, autumn videos and stopped people of all ages to ask them what they were wearing. Some of the people were so creative - lots of vintage, putting things together you’d not think to,
re-purposing clothes etc. it was a delight to see. She doesn’t do them as much now, but I can really recommend trying them.

when I look at the older women around me - beige or navy, ill fitting rain jackety coats, beige, black or blue trousers that don’t fit them - I think it’s a bit sad that they just disappear into this old woman ‘uniform’ . I don’t live in a place known for its satorial wonder so rarely see anyone whose look ‘jumps out’, but I love to see it. We should dress how we feel is ‘us’.

This thread has really cheered me up. And being complimented by Tilda Swinton . Wow.

LatteLady · 11/02/2025 12:27

I am in my 60s and have always embraced colour... hence the bright yellow coat and buying a pair of red and pink trainers at the weekend. Yes, there are days when I hit just black but when I need a boost I don colour and bright red lipstick, check the mirror and as long as Coco the Clown does not stare back at me, I go for it!

dudsville · 11/02/2025 07:24

I'm sitting here reading this thread and thinking back to the clothes I remember from yesterday, and I can't recall much. There was a fabulous couple walking briskly in perfectly done 40's style, but not the gimicky version, just good smart fitted wool coats and shoes and stuff. They really caught my attention and admiration. No one else stood out. I was in a busy, vibrant city, and the overall look was drab dystopian apocalypse.

That is EXACTLY how I would describe the people I see walking about!!!!!

Like a terrible film with an extreme washed out filter.

I aspire to wear clothes that would be noticed by Tilda Swinton!

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/02/2025 12:49

I don't obsess about fashion but I always have an image in my head I want to project - none of which is ever "sensible, invisible middle aged woman".

I did rather leave a colleague non plussed last week when he complemented my outfit - grey flannel high waisted, wide leg trousers, brogues, statememt necklace and an eau de nil knitted wrap jacket and I replied "thank you, I was aiming for posh 1930s lesbian".

Giggorata · 11/02/2025 13:00

Late to this thread though I am, it is very cheering to read the encouraging opinions about individual looks for older women.
I like a slightly quirky lagenlook style for myself nowadays, with jewel colours, but go a bit more hippie in summer, with ethnic maxi dresses and beaded sandals. And big hats. (That's when we get a summer)

I also enjoy Ari Seth Cohen's Advanced Style blog which is where I first saw the late great Iris Apfel and other wonderfully dressed older women.
Ari snaps people he sees in the street, too.

Krampus13 · 11/02/2025 13:04

Late sixties and always follow my instincts and wear what makes me happy. I NEVER consider what others may think about the way I dress. I have several grown up children who would give me advice if I was unsure about what to wear for a big event such as a wedding, or if I needed to know whether a particular colour suited me. Otherwise I wear what I like.

Anyway, more importantly, so glad you bought the jacket, I bet you’ll look amazing if your instincts say you will!

Now, I can only claim one degree of acquaintance with Tilda Swinton, but George is my actual real friend.

Lemonade2011 · 11/02/2025 13:13

I usually notice women who dress well, and I don’t mean just expensive but some women just know how to dress and accessorise for their shape/height/age and look amazing (46 and I’m not one of them) sometimes you just know they feel good in whatever they are wearing and it shows, so op buy the jacket and I’m sure you’ll look fabulous, life doesn’t end in our 50’s/60’s and onwards I like seeing people in different styles and outfits, I just wish I had the body and confidence to wear clothes better, always feel like a heap ☹️

menopausalfart · 11/02/2025 13:28

You're a Gen Xer, of course you'll rock it.

PrincessOfPreschool · 11/02/2025 13:34

I bought a huge, fluffy, furry coat from Bershka a couple of years ago, very 70s colouring (mustard/brown, my favourites) when shopping with my DD. I love it. My teenage kids hate it when I wear it as they think it draws too much attention to me but I love it and I think that's all that's important, even though it was probably targeted at 16-24 year olds! Now it's no longer so fashionable, maybe it's more acceptable on a 50+ year old.
