When you see quirky fashion on 50+ women do you think saddo or wowzers

Or neither?

I'm 56 and really want a Rocket St George bomber jacket. Mutton dressed up as mutton?

I look at some of my friends in their 50s/60s who wear Toast and Cos and they look super-stylish and classy but that's just not me. Does it look a bit try-hard to wear stuff that's a bit out there?

I don't know what's made me ask really - I usually don't care but maybe it's bc I've changed jobs recently and am meeting a lot of new people. Im thinking what their first impression of me might be.

I'm "fifty plus" now and I give no fucks what people think. I get ridiculously excited by mad looking trainers. Sometimes I clock myself I a mirror and wonder if I look a bit crackers...and then I shrug and enjoy my silly shoes or bright colours or whatever it is.

Middle age has to be good for something. I think menopause is a gift for not giving a toss!

If you love it then buy it!

I like that brand. Nearly bought a chair but still undecided.

I'm 68 and I wear absolutely whatever I want without considering for a minute what some judgy rando might think. All that matters is that I'm comfortable and happy with my own clothes. Then again, I'm retired so I don't have a boss or customers to satisfy.

I love seeing men and women of all ages dressed with personality. So many people shrink and hide with age, I love seeing women who are full of life.

This.

In a dull sea of beige, greige, navy and black, anything quirky or colourful gets my vote.

I wish more people dressed interestingly to please themselves.

Guavafish1 · 11/02/2025 02:14

Aren’t women over 50 years old invisible?

IridiumSky · 11/02/2025 02:28

Ha! I’m 66 years old and have just discovered CyBerPunK fashion.

Privilege of age: Do whatever you want! 😄

LegoHouse274 · 11/02/2025 03:08

I just want to say that I'm only in my thirties but even I sometimes ponder whether I should start 'dressing my age' and this thread has really cheered me up! A friend told me I looked like a CBeebies presenter the other day...I think/hope it was said lovingly! (And I'd love to be a CBeebies presenter!)

echt · 11/02/2025 03:17

Context: I'm 70 and look rather like Vivienne Westwood. Not intentional clothes, more the face and hair, which were mine before hers. There are worse people to resemble. Smile
When we moved to Melbourne, DD remarked on a certain middle-aged women's (teachers as it happens) style as extras in LOTR. Spot on, but still they looked as if they pleased themselves.

In the end, do what you want, who gives a fuck what they think? If they keep their thoughts to themselves who knows? If they voice it to you.....unlock your word bag.

ChewbaccasMrs · 11/02/2025 03:40

I always think thank God I'm not the only one.

I'm 49 turning 50 soon and there's no way I'll ever dress to suit anyone else,I wear what I like and I always get compliments on what I'm wearing from teenagers through to people that are old enough to be my parents,I love the way I look and so does my DH,my 5DC and my little Grandson.

Wear what you like OP and wear it with confidence and I bet you'll look amazing.

borntobequiet · 11/02/2025 04:20

I’m in my 70s and wear whatever I want. I have a great collection of leather bomber jackets. I wouldn’t have worn that jacket at any age, though, because I don’t like it. I think it’s tacky.

FrutenGlee · 11/02/2025 05:47

MulberryPeony · 10/02/2025 18:39

If I see someone turned out well, in whatever style, I admire their style. Age doesn’t come into it. Younger or older. Gender doesn’t come into it for me either. I’m think specifically about a young man near me who wears linen suits with a Panama hat in summer. One day if I pass him when I’m not in the car I’ll tell him how fab he looks.

Edited

Same here! I love commitment to a style and very much respect the thought and time that’s gone into it. And actually if it looks a bit awkward intentionally then all the more respect to them. It’s a statement and I absolutely love that. I love the drama of a double take. I love to see it, because I have no time or energy for think about clothes now. I hope everyone wears everything they enjoy.

Zusammengebrochen · 11/02/2025 05:53

I mind my own business - their bodies, their choice, regardless of age. 😧

Some people like those colours - it doesn't make them dull just because they're not parading around in neon or pastels. I love greens, teals, pinks, and denim blue these days but I don't judge others who feel or look better in other shades.

Squirrelsnut · 11/02/2025 06:09

I wouldn't judge a stranger a saddo for any reason, i hope, least of all their outfit. Wear what you want. Life is short and often difficult. Clothes can be a joy.

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/02/2025 06:24

i judge clothes, but not based on solely on age!
babies in headbands and dresses like dining room curtains
apprentice candidates dressed like sketchy crims
So, don’t sweat it

CurlewKate · 11/02/2025 06:56

I don't think either specifically because someone is over 50-because I am not ageist. Wear what you want and what you think looks good on you!

LavenderFields7 · 11/02/2025 07:15

Go for it!

piscofrisco · 11/02/2025 07:20

I love a quirky item and tbh I've started giving far less fucks as I've got older (now 45). The most judgement I get is from
My very conservative dresser of a husband so I don't wear my 'statement pieces' as he calls them Grin when out with his friends or when I'm corporate Wife-ing, but other than that I wear what I like.
Also I now want that jacket.

dudsville · 11/02/2025 07:24

I'm sitting here reading this thread and thinking back to the clothes I remember from yesterday, and I can't recall much. There was a fabulous couple walking briskly in perfectly done 40's style, but not the gimicky version, just good smart fitted wool coats and shoes and stuff. They really caught my attention and admiration. No one else stood out. I was in a busy, vibrant city, and the overall look was drab dystopian apocalypse.

Twixtmasjigsaw · 11/02/2025 07:25

Absolutely this. If you love it, wear it.

Sassybooklover · 11/02/2025 07:26

56 isn't old. Wear what you feel comfortable in. I like stylish/classy but I also love a bit of quirky! You don't have to go for an entire outfit of quirkiness, but pick one item. It gives an added interest.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/02/2025 07:28

Ha! I am 57 and a young woman at the office said to me last week “I look forward to seeing what you’ll be wearing today”. Hmm. I said that I’m not sure that’s a compliment but she insisted it was!

I wear what the hell I want, what I think looks good, a mixture of new and vintage.

Go for it op. I think it’s a great jacket.

Stripytablecloth · 11/02/2025 07:46

Prue leith is a good example for me when answering this question. I personally don’t like her clothes or glasses, far too loud for me. However I absolutely love that she wears her personal style so boldly and freely and I really admire her for it. I often admire someone’s personal style even if I don’t personally like it.

Woppa · 11/02/2025 07:48

100% wowzers

Readmorebooks40 · 11/02/2025 07:49

Wear what makes you happy. I love colour and sequins. I'm 44 and I like to wear things that cheer me up. I look around and so many people look the same and for want of a better word so many people dress boring which is completely fine if that's their vibe. Dopamine dressing all the way. 😊

Doggiedays · 11/02/2025 07:51

I've never been a mainstream dresser so why should I change because I'm in my 50s? I bonded with my new neighbour through our love of the odd Toast garment but really who cares - my friends all dress to suit themselves - some wear very conservative clothing some not so much - it's not my business, I don't get the judging - wear gym clothes, wear a bomber jacket make yourself happy, embrace living life for yourself, forget the judgy people - they have enough on their plate with a long list of things they are dissatisfied with - can you imagine how much misery exists in their heads?

Not in my experience.
