When you see quirky fashion on 50+ women do you think saddo or wowzers

Or neither?

I'm 56 and really want a Rocket St George bomber jacket. Mutton dressed up as mutton?

I look at some of my friends in their 50s/60s who wear Toast and Cos and they look super-stylish and classy but that's just not me. Does it look a bit try-hard to wear stuff that's a bit out there?

I don't know what's made me ask really - I usually don't care but maybe it's bc I've changed jobs recently and am meeting a lot of new people. Im thinking what their first impression of me might be.

OP posts:

If I see someone turned out well, in whatever style, I admire their style. Age doesn’t come into it. Younger or older. Gender doesn’t come into it for me either. I’m think specifically about a young man near me who wears linen suits with a Panama hat in summer. One day if I pass him when I’m not in the car I’ll tell him how fab he looks.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 10/02/2025 18:40

To be honest, this is a non question. The jacket in question is not remotely anything that has an age limit. In fact, Esme (Sewing Bee) frequently wears bomber jackets and she's much older than OP.

MulberryPeony · 10/02/2025 18:40

OP could I point you in the direction of Never Fully Dressed too. Watch their styling videos on a variety of models. It’s a delight.

Just remembered that they styled Mary Berry in a lot of patterned and/or embroidered bomber jackets in various GBBO. Make of that what you will 😂

JustGettingStarted · 10/02/2025 18:46

I liked Frankie's style more than Grace's.

Thanks for the replies. Bought it!

Good.

You'll look fabulous.

admirible · 10/02/2025 20:45

Get it and match it with some really funky footwear, platform boots with a heft sole and cropped wide leg pants
. Yum

backpnceagain · 10/02/2025 20:46

Ageing is a gift and life's far too short to spend worrying what other people might think of us. Wear the jacket with the love and enjoyment it brings. You deserve to wear clothes that make you smile 😊

SeanMean · 10/02/2025 21:09

That’s a gorgeous jacket!😍

MurdoMunro · 10/02/2025 21:13

Mary Beard is my muse. She loves her spangly trainers. She’s ace. I strive to Be More Mary.

Pollyanna87 · 10/02/2025 22:01

I love seeing men and women of all ages dressed with personality. So many people shrink and hide with age, I love seeing women who are full of life.

Echobelly · 10/02/2025 22:13

Britpopbaby · 10/02/2025 13:03

I would admire your outfit even if it wasn’t my personal style.

Exactly... I admire anyone wearing something a bit different whether I'd do it or not. Makes the world a more interesting place. And when it's someone my age (47) or older, even better.

greengreyblue · 10/02/2025 22:16

Id think you’re cool. But then I’m 53. I love seeing style and fashion on all ages. The only fashion crimes for me are having no interest in style at all!

Pickandmixusername · 10/02/2025 22:18

Not sad at all. I'm 41 and admire women who dress a bit quirky. The only style I'm not keen on is athleisure type clothing. And even then, I don't recoil in horror, just think that isn't my taste. Probably something to do with me not liking the gym very much tbh 😂

getrhythm · 10/02/2025 22:23

I love it as long as it's decent quirky fashion!

Vinvertebrate · 10/02/2025 22:30

IMO the best thing about being 50-odd is that you’ve earned the absolute right to wear whatever the fuck you like. X

theduchessofspork · 10/02/2025 22:33

The same way I’d look at quirky fashion on a woman of any age - wowzers if she pulled it off

StMarie4me · 10/02/2025 22:40

I wear whatever I want. Often jeans and a band t shirt and a S.O.P.H.I.E hoodie .

I'm 62.

fitnessmummy · 10/02/2025 22:43

I love the brand! You only live once! Go for it! Who cares what anyone else thinks!

EveryDayisFriday · 10/02/2025 22:44

Depends on how quirky, honestly.

Wearing interesting colours, styles and patterns that work well together = love it, fantastic.

Looking like you've fallen through a charity shop rail and picked up random creased clothes that don't fit well along the way, I'm not so sure.

AcquadiP · 10/02/2025 22:48

There was a lady in her late 70s who used to have her haircut at the same place as me. She had this uncanny knack of buying accessories which were both stylish and on trend: shoes, handbag etc. She didn't go over the top and her nods to fashion made her look cool.

keffie12 · 10/02/2025 22:50

I've changed my style every decade. I am early, 60s. I wear grunge/punk with splashes of boho colour and rock vibe. There is plenty about to mix it up. Granted, i can wear it and live it. However, there is no reason to look old before your time. You wear what you wish

Crispynoodle · 10/02/2025 23:35

I'm 58 and with every passing year I get more eccentric with my 'style'. I am having a ball with clothes. Only today I purchased a soft pink oversized cardigan with appliquéd 3 dimensional cherries on them and a long silver pleated midi skirt! I have many pairs of chunky boots in all the colours of the rainbow!

Baital · 10/02/2025 23:37

Wear what you want. Ignore other people's opinion.

Unless you are going for a job interview 😀

MsGrumpytrousers · 10/02/2025 23:39

I think the main perk of being a 50+ woman is you don't give a stuff about what anyone thinks of your style choices.
