When you see quirky fashion on 50+ women do you think saddo or wowzers

Or neither?

I'm 56 and really want a Rocket St George bomber jacket. Mutton dressed up as mutton?

I look at some of my friends in their 50s/60s who wear Toast and Cos and they look super-stylish and classy but that's just not me. Does it look a bit try-hard to wear stuff that's a bit out there?

I don't know what's made me ask really - I usually don't care but maybe it's bc I've changed jobs recently and am meeting a lot of new people. Im thinking what their first impression of me might be.

This 62 year old is very much not invisible and I wear what I want, when I want, and that's what makes me happy, so a non negotiable. The wisdom of age gives you the realisation that you worried far too much about other people's opinions and for what!

Someone's style / taste may not be mine but you have every right to clothe yourself how you want. My message would be worry less about what others think and when you are happy with you, it has a far more positive impact on everything else you do and as for age, it is only a number, it doesn't mean you have to wear a uniform and join some sort of imaginary club, which exists only in a marketer's dream, in order to flog some dreadful stuff!

So no, I don't think saddo, I think it is someone being them!

pictoosh · 11/02/2025 08:35

Your mistake is in seeking approval from a passing audience.

I'm 50 this year and have always toted quirk. I'm not about to flip my lifelong taste and style am I?

Wear what you feel good in.

Aintnobodygottime · 11/02/2025 08:43

‘When I am old, I shall wear purple’.

I’m in my early 50s and hope to grow up to become Su Pollard. The best bit of ageing is the liberation from caring what anyone thinks.

Friends and I will often warn each other we’re coming over all drapey. Not that it can’t look fantastic and there’s room for it, but retreating entirely behind tasteful robes isn’t how any of us want to age.

AzurePanda · 11/02/2025 08:44

I wear mad clothes all the time. I love volume and colour and am usually overdressed for the occasion. Tilda Swinton once stopped me in the street to say how much she loved my outfit which may or may not be a compliment, depending on your pov!

MissDoubleU · 11/02/2025 08:51

I absolutely love it and I usually stop them and tell them so. Same as when I see older ladies with dyed hair, we always have heartwarming little chats and it’s really beautiful. All my friends feel the same, we all want to be Baddie Winkle when we grow up! There’s no age to stop expressing yourself through fashion, enjoying colours and feeling good in your body.

Anyone saying or thinking otherwise is a sad judgemental person and I feel quite sorry for them. Feel good in and about yourself, that’s all that matters.

Im 34 and have had people comment on my fashion and style since I was 14 years old. Oh that’s a bit odd, does that go with that? Or my very favourite “That’s a BOLD choice” - If I listened to them I wouldn’t have nearly so much joy (or very cool jackets) in my life.

SkaterGrrrrl · 11/02/2025 08:51

Go for it.

Please give me a style 101! I love Tilda Swinton.

I’ve always been a colourful dresser - Stine Goya, Monki are some of my go tos. I’d love to get a bit more stylish with it!

That is a huge compliment. What were you wearing?

Daftypants · 11/02/2025 09:02

I just looked it up as I hadn’t heard of the brand .
Next has one “ ecru mono lips 💋 “ I really quite like that !
You would probably need to wear fairly plain items under it ?
black , cream , denim ?
I think quirky is a great look on any age .
Some looks don’t look good on a variety of ages but this does .
PS I’m not a confident person / dresser eg my summer wardrobe mostly linen wider leg or straight leg trousers with sneakers and little tops / t shirts some from Sugarhill Brighton some are just plain Breton tops

ZebedeeDougalFlorence · 11/02/2025 09:04

Many people I know dress in a similar way to the way they dressed when they young because it is part of their personality. Some were more "out there", some were more conservative, some loved designer labels. While most of them have developed their style as they have grown older, they all retain something of their youthful style. Nobody bats an eyelid because that's just...them. And they are all quite a bit older than you. So I say if you love it and you think it suits you...go for it!

Omg. I could die happy if that happened to me. You must rock.

AzurePanda · 11/02/2025 09:36

Ha ha, glad to meet so many Tilda fans - I adore her! It was a Simone Rocha number with clumpy boots (bought from eBay / Vinted) and my grandmother’s handbag.

cupidsabsolutepsyche · 11/02/2025 09:40

OP, that jacket is fantastic! You will look fab.
At 47, I live for the comments from my family and they definitely like my clothes, even when they're laughing, because they're a bit of me.
I once needed something to wear on my head at a family wedding and couldn't find anything I liked without spending a fortune. I have a bird/feather clip thing that I made years ago, when I suggested to my mum that I might wear it she just said well if we can't rely on you to wear a bird in your hair, who can we? It's my duty to wear cool stuff!

I hope it was one of the sheer ones!

(Mind you, the only time I met TS, she was dressed like the late queen walking her corgis for a walk — and still looked fabulous…)

monty2020 · 11/02/2025 09:45

Wear what you want and enjoy it 🤩

WinterBones · 11/02/2025 09:48

my teenager summed it up beautifully the other day "Personal style should be whatever the fuck you feel like wearing"

I'm not quite 50, more mid 40s, but i have a rather unconventional sense of fashion (goth/rock/hippy-ish type stuff), i firmly believe life is too short for boring clothes, and we should wear what makes us happy.

My 73yo mother firmly disapproves and her usual reaction is to roll her eyes at whatever i have on, or occasionally tut and ask me how old i am.. and as i quoted to her.. "I don't have to explain myself to you, i'm a grown woman and i'll do what i want to do" (thanks Adele)

Wear what you like, so long as its appropriate for the setting you're in, fuck what anyone else thinks about it.

AzurePanda · 11/02/2025 09:53

I just love seeing women (and men) enjoying clothes and fashion. Even if an outfit is not to my taste at all I would far rather see someone expressing personality through their clothes than just trying to be invisible. Same goes for houses.

SnoopysHoose · 11/02/2025 09:59

We should all be more Tilda, compliment and support one another. I've said to women I love your outfit/dress etc and it always brings a happy reaction, I had a woman say to me a day you look fabulous and I floated home beaming.

Yousay55 · 11/02/2025 10:05

I always admire women who wear clothes like that over 50.

MooBaggage · 11/02/2025 10:06

I'm mid-50's and the size of a small town and have never felt happier than when I went to a retro-type event for the first time last summer and wore a Dolly and Dotty dress - with a bright red net underskirt I'd also bought 😀 It was ace - utterly bonkers really for me and nothing like my usual choice, but I've secretly wanted to buy more D&D dresses ever since and wear them all the time..!

Am currently losing weight so am resisting buying more until the summer, but then might buy a couple more (from Vinted!) and unleash myself on the world 😀

OuterSpaceCadet · 11/02/2025 10:07

I love out there dressing, especially on older people!

Iggi999 · 11/02/2025 10:09

Confidence though, isn't it? To pull it off. Some of us don't have as much of that!
Also, if you live with teenagers you can't help but feel the silent criticisms of however you dress!

LilacPony · 11/02/2025 10:11

@SnoopysHoose 100%, I am always telling random women I think their outfit is fabulous and have never had anything other than a delighted response.

ButIToldYouSoooo · 11/02/2025 10:29

Love the jacket
