If you are a bit older what do you actually spend and use at home for your skincare?

glassglob · 31/01/2025 19:14

If you are late 30's to late 40's can you share your at home skincare and also roughly what you spend. I am really interested injectables or "tweakments" you get done at a clinic although you can list them of course but more in what you use at home yourself so for example at home devices.

I have always spent a bit more on things like actives such as copper peptides and tretinoin but saved money on cleansers and moisturisers. However I recently realised my cheap as chips balm cleanser was stripping my skin and causing it to dry out so tried a sample size of the Elemis Pro-collagen cleanser and am really liking it. I also tried a sample size of the biologique recherche P50 Lotion and also am really enjoying and am finding better results than with my usual Alpha H Liquid Gold.

Another beauty splurge been my current body LED mask which I enjoy using and this year at Christmas I spent £240 on products from NIOD.

I don't spend a lot on myself in other areas but I enjoy skincare but should I really become a "luxury" skincare woman? Are these products actually better? I don't really know what is normal either as a lot of women I know spend a lot on nails and eyelash appointments and get botox but don't really spend much on skincare. Others seem to use Medik8 exclusively which is quite spendy.

@StormingNorman Yeah I love their moor lavender calming body oil, its my favourite thing to use when I'm recovering from a migraine its so calming and restorative. Yeah I'd love to be able to devote myself to their regime but it just doesn't work for my skin for the most part.

I’ve never tried the Moor Lavender ones but I get a lot of migraines so will give it a go. The Rose is beautiful and the Lemon Lemongrass is super uplifting (and supposed to be toning too but I never noticed that).

Snippit · 01/02/2025 21:25

58 year old here 🤗. I’ve used the exact same cleanser as yourself for years, it’s amazing, not cheap but worth it. I use garnier vitamin c brightening serum cream, followed by Nivea Q10 energy cream. People are quite shocked at my age and think I’m in my early 40’s.

I’ve never had any tweakments, I hate needles and the industry in the Uk isn’t regulated sufficiently. Watching Botched, the two Drs on there can’t believe what happens over here, I have to agree.

If my skin gets really dry during the central heating season I use Balancing Rosehip oil, I use one from face theory. I also pop a factor 50 on all year round.

My dad had such wonderful skin and looked very youthful, and he used bugger all apart from soap and water, 😋

SoapCollector · 01/02/2025 20:29

This sounds like a good plan! @28Fluctuations please can I ask about the products that you use? Which soap? Normal standard E45 cream or the special face one? And which suncream and body oil?

I'm really enjoying reading this thread op. Thanks for starting it.

I am using Faith in Nature bar soap at the moment, but L'Occitane soap is lovely and lasts ages, or any pure vegetable soap, really. I use E45 daily lotion on my face - not a special face one. For SPF - L'Oreal Revitalift 50+ but there's a good one from Olay, too, and Neutrogena. But these thin SPFs aren't really very effective - not like the proper gunky suncream you'd use at the beach. So I find a hat and sunglasses are better than relying on 'beauty' SPF like the ones in make-up. For my body I use sweet almond oil - but grapeseed and many other variations would do just as well. Pure shea butter is amazing.

I think most skincare routine stuff is ineffective and overpriced. Skin is the biggest organ in your body and it is affected by the same elements as every other part: sleep, healthy eating, lots of water, exercise, no smoking and your personal genetics.

The people you see who look 40 at 55 either have great genes or a great plastic surgeon and a tweakment specialist on speed dial- good for them either way! But it's not down to micellar water and £££ serums.

soccermum10 · 02/02/2025 09:10

I am 41 and have very sensitive skin. To take makeup off, I use non fragrance baby wipes. I can not do all the cleansing routine, etc, because it iritates my skin and drys it out. I use an exfoliator twice a week and like a face mask on a Sunday. The only moisturiser I use is suncream. I'm not a fan of foundation, I use a little BB cream. I always get told I never age lol 😆 I do have good skin, but thinks its down to my genes to be fair. My mum and dad never looked their age either. I do think suncream all year round works too 🙂 I am happy with my skin. My friend is 2 years older than me and is using botox. I vow never to do it, but each to their own

Laser - swear by it.

Which laser do you have please? I’m intrigued by laser.

EverybodysALebowski · 02/02/2025 11:56

57, dry skin since menopause. I never smoked and have not been big on sun exposure since my teen years, so that has helped a bunch. Am also fat, which has disadvantages but does seem to keep my face looking a bit fresher/not gaunt. Used to have hormonal acne but dietary changes plus adapalene fixed that up.

Product-wise, a mix of inexpensive and mid-to-high-end stuff, including Superdrug Vit E, Medik8, Biossance, Farmacy, Embryolisse, and K-beauty stuff (sunscreen, serum, cleanser).

I'm also relentless about only buying the expensive stuff (Medik8) when it's at least 20% off, and generally only go through 2 C-Tetras and 2 Crystal Retinal 6s of each per year, so that keeps costs reasonable.

I've tried more high-end in the past (Skinceuticals, Dr Dennis Gross) and liked it but didn't think it was better enough to justify the cost. I will very occasionally buy the DDG exfoliation pads though, and use them maybe once a month. And I will admit I've ordered the (expensive) new peptide thing from Medik8, which I'm hoping will be great.

Really, I think all you need to spend on is actives. If I had to cut way back, I'd go to store brand (Superdrug Vit E stuff is really good) + Korean sunscreen on everything else but hang on to my Vit C and retinal as long as I could.

I’m older with very sensitive skin and just moisturise with raw organic coconut oil. I often get taken for younger.

@SoNiceToComeHomeTo do you use the coconut oil as a cleanser too? I have sensitive skin which seems to be getting more reactive to products as I get older!

Coconut oil makes a good cleanser too, but I don't use it for that because I don't wear makeup (because of my sensitivity to it), apart from lipstick which for some reason is OK. Also I live in a very clean part of the country; I used to need cleanser of mild soap on my face when I lived in London.
Nowadays I just use plain warm water twice a day, and when I wash my hair every 3 days, I inevitably get a little bit of very mild shampoo on my face.

I2amonlyhereforTheBeer · 02/02/2025 17:33

That sounds an awful lot of time and money OP. Someone's profiting from your skincare routine, but is it you?

For the record, I'm well old. My skin is very good. I use E45 pump face wash, or sometimes just water to clean. Every day I wear Factor 50 sunscreen and the cheaper ones are just as good. The best things for skin I find are sleep, minimal stress, not smoking, plenty of water, good diet with regular oils and fats from fish and nuts, some exposure to sun for Vit D and plenty of exercise.

GrimDamnFanjo · 02/02/2025 17:44

Tbh I think a lot of skincare is diet, not smoking or sunbathing and genetics.

My routine is:
Pm - double cleanse, hyaluronic acid, tret, alternated with a serum, moisturiser
Am - wash with water, vit c, Cerave with spf.
I like Korean brands a lot.

On the more interventionist procedures:
I've had my first Botox at 55 in 3 places
Currentbody LED
Lumi pro injections alternates with below
PRP - with microneedling and injections in eye area every couple of months.

Marine collagen daily, HRT, magnesium, lacto gasseri, women's multi vits.

I have lost rather a lot of weight though and a lot of the above is to try and stop the sag!

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/02/2025 08:21

Oh dear I have found myself going down a medik8 rabbit hole!!

@EverybodysALebowski please report back on the new product or one stand out product in the range you love. I can only pay for one!!

Those that use tret does it go on clean dry skin or over another product?

Thankyou

wwyd2021medicine · 03/02/2025 09:34

The important products to me:
Medik8 crystal retinal. Currently on 20 and will up to 24 when I see it on offer in the next year as I have 2 20's. This always goes on first at night.

Vitamin C - I have a couple to use up and will then do research as to which may be best - I have geek and gorgeous, revolution and medik8 to use first

I use the random serums, night/day creams etc that I have as moisturiser. I'm using these up and then I'll have a think about a peptide serum but cba to go down that rabbit hole until I have cleared my random stash.

I use Biore spf

I'm also using anything I know I won't use on my face as hand cream and use the stuff with spf in the day - currently Olay total effects spf 50

I remember buying sebamed for teenage DD. Hadn't thought to use it for myself.

Just contemplating tret, so you apply it over moisturiser?

Which la Roche posay do you use please?

Currently laid up after surgery contemplating life at 48!!

Nice!
Yes I use it in sandwich method.
LRP cicaplast works like a gem for me.
Hope things will be the alright soon and you will start a good routine!

rumanah · 04/02/2025 00:28

Morning: cleanser, vitamin C and SPF50
Evening: cleanser, moisturiser and anti-ageing night cream

42, I always used retinol for my night/eye cream but am using Monderma tret 0.025%, azelaic acid 3%, niacinamide 4% atm. It's stronger and tightens creases if you don't mind the peeling.

Sleep for 7-8 hours, drink 2l of water, and try to eat as close to a mediterranean diet as possible, and it will boost your skin by a good 50% I find. Nothing works when you're tired. You shouldn't have to put up with undereye circles/shadows if you sleep well and apply low strength tret a few times a week.

Botox helps massively as above. Some do, some don't. It's largely pain and hassle free compared to fillers which I wouldn't go near now, although there are days I'm tempted.

Jillfi · 04/02/2025 01:29

Try a dermaroller too.

crouchendtigerr · 04/02/2025 01:35

I'm 57 and use Nivea and facial oil on my skin. I should probably do more but I'm too lazy. I have good enough skin - not dry or greasy, so can just have a very simple routine.

GFlower · 04/02/2025 08:37

My skin has honestly never been better, after a few years of struggling to find anything that even made the slightest of differences.

My daily routine is…

Morning:
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser (cheap and a good way to start the morning with fresh skin)
La Roche Posay SPF50 Oil Control Fluid (this has been my favourite so far but open to suggestions!)

Evening:
Elemis Pro Collagen Balm Cleanser (a bit pricier but just feels very lush)
Monderma Custom Formula (this for me was the game changer, dermatologist designed formula with tretinoin, niacinamide and azelaic acid specifically for my skin)
La Roche Posay Citaplast Moisturiser

This has gotten rid of any sun spots I had, and my skin texture feels incredible now after years of struggling (I believe that’s mainly the active ingredients in the monthly custom formula). I’d say anything else is pretty interchangeable, but the tret etc. has been worth investing a bit even if everything else is cheap! (As long as you’re not using anything damaging of course)

@crouchendtigerr I too like simple routines 🙂 please can I ask which Nivea products and facial oil you use and how do you use them?

CharlotteCChapel · 04/02/2025 12:13

I'm 60 but have very few wrinkles, but I'm falling apart inside.

Morning
Water wash
Hyaluronic acid serum
Day moisturiser or facial sunscreen

Pm
water wash
Hyaluronic serum
Tret
Night moisturiser.

So very simple. It's so easy to complicate things and damage your skin

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/02/2025 13:25

Definitely going to get La Roche Posay Citaplast Moisturiser and use at night time, might be too heavy for me in the morning so will try something else in the range. Thanks to those that suggested this.

Going to try the Monderma thanks for recommending @GFlower

ValentineValentineV · 04/02/2025 14:32

I am 55, I have Botox twice a year and fillers in various alternating places once a year. So jowls every year, then maybe lines on the sides of my mouth every two years, tiny bit in my cheeks every two or three years, small amount in my top lip every 7/8 years.
I use various different Nivea products, I seem to be allergic to everything else.
I am happy with my face.

Jillfi · 04/02/2025 20:02

UmberMoose · 04/02/2025 12:55

Is this effective?

It's similar to an LED mask in that it must be used every night to see visual results. It's not long-lasting but makes a small difference when combined with a good skincare routine.

If I had to choose one thing I'd go with the Medik8 Crystal Retinal. I started with the 3 and am now up to the 6. It's not cheap, and it gets more expensive as you go up in strength, but it's really nicely formulated and doesn't irritate. Again, look for 20% off (or more) sales that come around very regularly on SpaceNK, Cult Beauty, and the rest.

Am a week into the new Medik8 Advanced Peptides. I am only using once a day, in the morning after vitamin C, not the twice recommended, at least to start. (Tried using them in the evening after retinal and that was too much.) They are stronger than I anticipated - have noticed my skin gets red initially after using. Be cautious if you have sensitive skin. But the redness fades (and I use a little colour corrector anyway), so it's ok. I think they're helping a little with smoothness and minor expression lines, but that's probably wishful thinking so will give it 6 weeks before I am sure.
