If you are a bit older what do you actually spend and use at home for your skincare?

If you are late 30's to late 40's can you share your at home skincare and also roughly what you spend. I am really interested injectables or "tweakments" you get done at a clinic although you can list them of course but more in what you use at home yourself so for example at home devices.

I have always spent a bit more on things like actives such as copper peptides and tretinoin but saved money on cleansers and moisturisers. However I recently realised my cheap as chips balm cleanser was stripping my skin and causing it to dry out so tried a sample size of the Elemis Pro-collagen cleanser and am really liking it. I also tried a sample size of the biologique recherche P50 Lotion and also am really enjoying and am finding better results than with my usual Alpha H Liquid Gold.

Another beauty splurge been my current body LED mask which I enjoy using and this year at Christmas I spent £240 on products from NIOD.

I don't spend a lot on myself in other areas but I enjoy skincare but should I really become a "luxury" skincare woman? Are these products actually better? I don't really know what is normal either as a lot of women I know spend a lot on nails and eyelash appointments and get botox but don't really spend much on skincare. Others seem to use Medik8 exclusively which is quite spendy.

This is hilarious - I'm "older" (late 50s,) and I just wash my face in the shower. That's all I've ever done.
I probably look my age - which is fine. And I've also probably had several fabulous holidays from the money I've saved not buying skincare - which is even better!

weareallcats · 31/01/2025 20:10

I am 42 and spend quite a lot on skincare - I have sensitive skin and it’s been a long process of trial and error to find a routine that works well for me. I don’t do injectables and have no plans to - might consider proper cosmetic interventions in the future though.

I use a lot from the Elemis superfoods range - the cleanser in the orange pot, the day cream, the face mist and the luminous moisturiser (which I use as a primer). Then I use the Medik8 vitamin C (think it is called C-tetra) and night cream with skin&me tret. My spf is Clinique city block.

StormingNorman · 31/01/2025 20:10

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel - £42
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant - £65
Don’t bother with a toner - £0
Dr Dennis Gross Vitamin C serum - £87
Dr Dennis Gross Dewy Deep Cream - £77
La Roche Posey SPF50 - £20

In the evening I swap the vitamin C serum for
The Ordinary Retinol - £8

I’ve very recently started taking a collagen powder. It’s tasteless and I can pop it in my tea so I’ll carry on using it - £16

Drinking more water and cutting down on sugar and caffeine - Priceless

coolkatt · 31/01/2025 20:15

Night - Make up remover. Then face washed with soap, shower gel or whatever is to hand. With a cloth. Nothing expensive Fully rinsed with water only. No moisturiser for night.

Morning - face washed with water only and cloth. Moisturiser applied before makeup. I mean cheap moisturiser, like L'Oréal or something. No more than a £5. Foundation recently has been boots no7 BB cream.

That is it.
I would never spend more than £20 a month on creams. They are mostly water.
And I wouldn't be touching my face with injections of any sort till well into my 50's.
I'm 49 now and I happily look more early to mid 40's than late 40's.

troppibambini6 · 31/01/2025 20:15

I'm 47 and don't spend loads on day to day skincare really.
No 7 hot cloth cleanser
Elemis cleansing balm
Espa cleansing balm
I rotate between these 3.
Cerevae moisturiser
Facial oil (I can't remember which one) at night every couple of days

I've used tret in the past. All the acids and various other things but as long as my skin is clean and moisturised it's much happier.

However I do spend on aesthics. Four areas of Botox every 3 months. Filler once a year.
I had my filler done in December and I'm super happy. I've just started going somewhere new and she's amazing.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 31/01/2025 20:16

Olay anti wrinkle, both night & day. Usually £6-7 per pot.
L'Occitane Immortelle reset night serum in oil. The serum gives a lovely subtle glow to your skin. Described as a good night's sleep in a bottle. Look for smaller travel size bargains on ebay for a cheaper "tester pot". I've paid £25 -£32 for a full size 30ml bottle. Lasts 6ish weeks.

itsnothingoriginal · 31/01/2025 20:26

Just started on tret at 49 (maybe a bit late but was worried about my skin reacting) I'm delighted with it so far and has made an incredible difference already even though I've used retinol for years and my skin is pretty good for my age (so I've been told!)

I also have dermal fillers and need a top up. My turkey neck is definitely main issue as it looks so much older and scraggly in comparison to my face. The filler hoiks it up a bit so worth every penny - just wish I could afford a facelift!

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/01/2025 20:26

I wash my face with Simple face wash or Dove soap.

Moisturiser is currently Biore UV aqua rich which is £12.99 on Amazon but mine was cheaper as it was a gift from Japan.

I use a separate eye gel for cooling and puffiness - current one is Simple.

A much heavier duty moisturiser for neck and chest - such as Astral or the original Nivea in the blue pot, I also use this on my hands at night and nails.

I'm extremely cheap to run but I do care for my skin and make sure it is always properly moisturised.

Apileofballyhoo · 31/01/2025 20:29

I have sensitive skin.

Avene extremely gentle cleanser, used twice at night, rarely in morn.
Avene mineral spray.
Cosrx snail mucin.
Foreo Bear a couple of times a week, need to be more consistent.
Avene tolerance moisturising balm.
Medik8 Crystal Retinal, also need to be more consistent. Thinking of ordering tret online.
Avene moisturising cream spf50.

When I'm consistent about all that I get told I have lovely skin/I'm looking well.

Use peptides the odd time but tend to notice peach fuzz more when I do.

Am tempted to get botox for my 11s.

Mrscharlieeeee · 31/01/2025 20:35

I'm 41, I have Botox once a year in my forehead and between my eyebrows, it's classed as 2 areas and I pay £180.

Skincare wise I double cleanse each night with micellar water and the La Roche posey effaclear face wash, every other night I use a L'Oréal retinol and finish with number 7 perfect and protect eye cream and night cream. In the morning I use the number 7 future renew eye cream, serum, day cream and La Roche posey SPF. I probably replace my skincare creams every couple of months. I reckon I'm spending in the region of £150 every couple of months on serums and moisturisers.

AcquadiP · 31/01/2025 20:38

61 year old here. I believe what we put into our bodies is as important as what we put on it. I had to ditch my previous routine during the menopause as my facial skin and the skin on my hands, arms and legs became incredibly dry and no amount of moisturising made a difference for long. Then I came across an article detailing the health benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Since then I've taken 2 capsules per day (and use it liberally on salads.) The dry skin problem cleared up in a couple of weeks and my skin became nice and soft again. I use a Tangerine and Olive Oil soap as a cleanser (triple milled and made by Nesti Dante), rinsed off with cold water. My moisturiser is Olay Total Effects 7 in one (day cream and night cream.)
I was made up when a 19 year old colleague recently told me how good my skin looks and now she and her mum take EVOO capsules.

Ninerina · 31/01/2025 20:38

I'm 55
I wash with water in the morning then use my Currentbody LED mask for ten mins then apply sunblock
In evening I triple cleanse with a balm cleanser, jelly cleanser and toner all from Home Bargains
I apply a No7 retinol sparingly then a zinc and castor oil cream- think it's meant to be nappy cream- also from Home Bargains.
My 7 year old stepson says I look 38. Not sure how accurate that is ha ha but I will take it 😅

Seeingadistance · 31/01/2025 20:41

I'm 56. I rub my face with wet hands in bath or shower, then rub my face and neck with E45 cream or baby oil.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/01/2025 20:42

I'm 53 and have fairly young-looking skin for my age. At night I use either Aldi's dupe for Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish or whatever lotion/cream cleanser I happen to fancy in TKMaxx and then a gentle anti-blemish face wash (perimenopausal skin prone to the occasional spot). I use Aldi regenerative night cream or Nivea in the blue pot. In the morning I just wash my face with water and use a day moisturiser (usually Aldi). I definitely wouldn't have botox or any kind of tweakments.

I've used various much more expensive brands in the past and have realised you really don't 'get what you pay for'!

Hedjwitch · 31/01/2025 20:44

I'm 61 and all my skincare is UpCircle. My skin is in the best condition it's ever been in.

glassglob · 31/01/2025 20:45

Mangoesintoapub · 31/01/2025 19:36

I think balm cleansers are much of a muchness. The Elemis one smells lovely but I think they’ll all give you same results.

I thought the same but the Inky List one was really messing up my skin somehow, I then tried Liz Earle again and my skin didn't like it but the more expensive balms like Emma Hardie and Elemis are much nicer on my skin and less harsh, I don't even have sensitive skin really.

I think the Zinc nappy cream is having a bit of a moment in skincare circles actually, you are bang on trend!

Laser - swear by it.

musicalfrog · 31/01/2025 20:50

Mid 40s. I take bovine collagen every day, don't even bother with makeup any more. It's really improved things.

I do need to find a UPF for summer though.

Crankyaboutfood · 31/01/2025 20:54

topic stuff is all iterations of the same and a lot of the brands mentioned are not cruelty free. There is a role for botox and filler, imo, used very modestly, but if you don’t want that or in addition to that lasers are where you should spend your money. Buy a series and do 4 light videos a year. it will help with tone and collagen.

glassglob · 31/01/2025 20:56

@CoffeeBeansGalore I tried a sample of L'Occitane Immortelle serum in the past and it was lovely, it felt very luxurious which in many ways is nice in and of itself. Do you feel like it has cumulative benefits over time?

I honestly don't feel I need Botox yet and I'm very wary of filler as I know more than one person who had bad results which are still negatively affecting their appearance years later which were done by medical professionals. I am interested in things like PRP. PRF and Skin Boosters though. What lasers do you do?

I'm 50 and my skin is good.

Morning routine:

Cleanse with Emma hardy cleansing balm - take anything stubborn around the eye off with Simple micellar water
COSRX Snail mucin
Augustinus bader moisturiser
origins eye brightening cream
Nip and Fab peptide finishing oil

Evening routine:

Cleanse with Emma Hardy balm and Simple Micellar water

then EITHER

Liquid gold
COSRX snail mucin
Prai 24k gold wrinkle repair cream
Medik8 advanced night eye cream
Prai ageless throat and décolletage cream
Nip and Fab peptide finishing oil
Revitalash

OR

COSRX snail mucin
Medik8 crystal retinal cream
Medik8 advanced night eye cream
Prai ageless throat and décolletage cream
Nip and Fab peptide finishing oil
Revitalash

I alternate the two evening routines since I don't use liquid gold with the retinal

I also take marine collagen and do face yoga every other night. I have baby botox once every 6-8 months.

PorkPieForStarters · 31/01/2025 21:02

I'm in your age range. All I use is Simple Refreshing Face Wash, then Simple Rich Moisturiser. About £2.50 each in Tesco. That's it.

I've not found an SPF I like yet, so the hunt is still on for one, but I have no plans to start injectables or retinol or collagen or any of that. I don't like the thought of having to then do it for the rest of my life; woman before us have managed without of centuries anyway and I don't think they look terrible!
