If you are a bit older what do you actually spend and use at home for your skincare?

If you are late 30's to late 40's can you share your at home skincare and also roughly what you spend. I am really interested injectables or "tweakments" you get done at a clinic although you can list them of course but more in what you use at home yourself so for example at home devices.

I have always spent a bit more on things like actives such as copper peptides and tretinoin but saved money on cleansers and moisturisers. However I recently realised my cheap as chips balm cleanser was stripping my skin and causing it to dry out so tried a sample size of the Elemis Pro-collagen cleanser and am really liking it. I also tried a sample size of the biologique recherche P50 Lotion and also am really enjoying and am finding better results than with my usual Alpha H Liquid Gold.

Another beauty splurge been my current body LED mask which I enjoy using and this year at Christmas I spent £240 on products from NIOD.

I don't spend a lot on myself in other areas but I enjoy skincare but should I really become a "luxury" skincare woman? Are these products actually better? I don't really know what is normal either as a lot of women I know spend a lot on nails and eyelash appointments and get botox but don't really spend much on skincare. Others seem to use Medik8 exclusively which is quite spendy.

@creamsnugjumper & @Mytholmroyd Sunday Riley is one brand I have never tried to be honest, I am quite tempted now, I am sure I saw Space NK sell little travel products of theirs I might try!

I haven't tried the naked or thriving Oils, I'm not really an oil fan as such for my skin although I haven't actually trialled a nice one in a long time!

@Slytherinnnnn I've never had much success with the Aldi dupes either, not a fan of that shop in general really, they have some nice chocolate but I'm not really that impressed otherwise.

7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.
Plenty of exercise.
A good diet low in sugar, alcohol and UPF.
Plenty of water daily.
And then soap, water, E45 for face, pure oil for the rest of the body and sunscreen + hat.

joanofaardvark · 01/02/2025 12:28

@glassglob I don't like the original La Mer from the tub either - too thick and the oil part seems to separate slightly from the white lanolin- type part. Like it should be a night cream ('cold cream') or body butter.

The moisture soft lotion is thinner and much more like a normal moisturiser - try to get a sample from the counter.

I started by trying a sample I got free with their lip balm (the only one I will use despite the silly price, never dries out, leave on all night for baby soft luscious pout in the morning)

Slytherinnnnn · 01/02/2025 12:29

@glassglob me neither, I don’t even like the dark chocolate that much, it has a waxy taste to me. I sometimes go for wine if I haven’t been to Majestic, that’s it really!

Mercurysinretrograde · 01/02/2025 12:35

I’m nearly 55 and my skin looks 7-10 years younger. I use Dermalogica Biolumin c serum at night, alternated every other night with their phyto-nature oxygen serum and cream. The results have been amazing! Next thing I want to try is Skinceuticals CE Ferrulic and Ptiox, but I expect they’ll do exactly what my current skincare does as the ingredients are similar.

Gah81 · 01/02/2025 12:47

Early 40s here. At the age of 30 I went straight to a top dermatologist, asked their advice and have followed it to the letter ever since. It seems to have paid off, based on the compliments from friends, colleagues and strangers. I use the usual mix of things: prescription retinoid, Vit C serum, azelaic acid, SPF 50 and hats.

Otherwise, I keep cuticle oil, hand and foot cream by my bed and apply every evening before I go to sleep. Bio-kult, Vit C syrup and turmeric supplements every morning.

Mytholmroyd · 01/02/2025 12:48

@creamsnugjumper Haha! That's weird we posted at the same time! 😊 Not a brand I had ever heard anyone mention previously. Interesting you can buy it from vinted though - thanks for the tip!

glassglob · 01/02/2025 12:54

@Mercurysinretrograde I had a couple of Dermalogica facials years ago and tried some of their products then but haven't revisited them since then, I will take another look!

@Gah81 I do agree with you that those are all the "big hitters" and I use all that stuff as well. I was actually very lucky as I was allergic to benzoyl peroxide and had moderate acne as a teenager, so I got sent to an NHS dermatologist and was prescribed topical tretinoin then and have been using it ever since as well as SPF of course and have added in things like Vitamin C, Acids and Azelaic acid since then. That was always where my money went but I am interested in things like serums and nice cleansers as well as icing on the cake so to speak! I've always been a natural sun avoider as well, I have had migraines since childhood and so never liked being in direct sunlight, like a vampire!

@joanofaardvark Perhaps I will visit the counter next time I'm in town and see if they are doing any samples!

I’m late 40’s. My budget is fairly high but that is because I like my skincare. I get Botox twice a year. No other clinic treatments.

Skincare is always on rotation but its cleansers, toner, a couple of serums, moisturiser (am and pm), prescription tretinoin, facial spf.

I have a few gadgets I like to use. LED facial mask, décolleté and hands. I have a Foreo UFO which I quite like using 2-3 times per weeks with their masks. A facial steamer (game changing). Foreo Bear.

I used to use cosmetic grade skincare but I like the regular luxury brands atm (Lancôme absolue, Elemis, Tatcha etc). Sometimes I’ll swap over to some Korean skincare.

I think compared to most women I know I am excessive with the skincare. I feel I am pretty normal with the amount I spend at clinics for my injectables though.

UmberMoose · 01/02/2025 13:06

I'm not too young and I'm in my 30's. Here is my routine that I follow to use tret and keep my skin normal:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
la roche posay spf
Evening:
la roche posay moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

glassglob · 01/02/2025 13:12

@StrawberrySundaes I got a Foreo UFO for Christmas, I'm still not sure about it, it seems nice used once in a while but I'm not sure I'd use it everyday, but perhaps its the mask ingredients I'm not loving, I'm not a huge sheetmask fan. I have an LED mask and a nuface mini and myolift which I'm not sure how compare to the bear as I haven't tried that.

I used to love Lancôme they were my first lux skincare love, I was heavily swayed by their use of Juliette Binoche and Isabella Rossellini in their 90's advertising and I adored their Clarifiance Gel which is long since discontinued sadly, I used to feel like a french princess (one who'd kept her head) when I used that stuff, sadly it didn't do much for my oily acne prone skin.

OP posts:
Slytherinnnnn · 01/02/2025 13:46

@glassglob Isabella Rossellini, I always thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world when I was younger 🥰. I’m sure I bought Lancôme just because of IR.

She’s in Conclave. I hadn’t realised until I saw it. Fabulous actress.

glassglob · 01/02/2025 14:19

Yeah I love her, she was and is truly beautiful saw her in Conclave at the cinema and she was great! I remember when Lancôme let her go because they said she was too old! They did finally come to their senses and rehired her more recently.

I think good skin is mostly genetic anyway. My DM had good, fairly young-looking skin until she was quite old. She was a smoker most of her life, is fairly keen on wine and coffee and hardly ever drinks water! She never did skin care beyond the occasional bit of Nivea and washed her face with soap and water.

I remember buying sebamed for teenage DD. Hadn't thought to use it for myself.

Just contemplating tret, so you apply it over moisturiser?

Which la Roche posay do you use please?

Currently laid up after surgery contemplating life at 48!!

@joanofaardvark A friend and I clubbed together and then split a tub of La Mer in our 20's, it was nice but it didn't really do anything special for my skin but it was very oily then, perhaps I'd get more out of it now in my 40's? I am just trying the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum and my skin does look nice today, I'm looking really for a nice restorative serum to use on the nights I am not using actives.

Yeah I remember and yeah it is Dr Hauschka who advises you just use the toner at night to let your skin do its own thing. I was a huge devotee of Dr Hauschka in my early 20's at one point and used to get their facials as well but my skin ended up a total mess, looking back I think I got fungal acne from the cleansing cream! However I actually still love some of their products like the rose cream and the rejuvenating mask. However back to the point, I do think if your skin can go without it then it is good to let your skin breath a bit at night if you are oily and I do that myself sometimes, also apparently if you apply your glycolic then just go to bed with nothing else overnight it boosts the collagen stimulating properties!

I love the philosophy and the smell of Dr Hauschka but it never did much for my skin. I stick to the body products now. Their hand cream is one of my favourites and the body oils are next level. Although with my dry skin a bottle disappears in about two weeks which makes them very expensive.

glassglob · 01/02/2025 16:35

@StormingNorman Yeah I love their moor lavender calming body oil, its my favourite thing to use when I'm recovering from a migraine its so calming and restorative. Yeah I'd love to be able to devote myself to their regime but it just doesn't work for my skin for the most part.

glassglob · 01/02/2025 11:33

@NewMe2024 I think I do most of that, although I do have a bit of a sweet tooth but I try to limit my intake! I do agree about over stripping the skin although I also think its very person dependent, my skin can take a lot of acid exfoliation as its quite thick and naturally oily but then the inky list balm was too harsh for it, go figure!

Yeah, this was the thing that surprised me the most after consulting a proper derm (I’m 43 FWIW). I loved using a lactic acid mask every week and a daily acid exfoliant (like Alpha Gold etc.) and thought my skin did too. But she made me drop it down to a once weekly mask and I swear that a few months later my skin looks much happier for it. She said the acids are a fad and they wreck the dermis.

NewMe2024 · 01/02/2025 16:43

My skin is combination and quite delicate though, I would say.

Bignanna · 01/02/2025 16:45

Night:
Cerave hydrating cleanser
tretinoin
Moisturiser- e45, Cerave, not t expensive, they all contain the same ingredients more or less.
Morning:
Wipe over with pad moistened with micellar water
Hyalonuric acid serum
SPF 50
Can’t be doing with a huge list of creams and serums!

glassglob · 01/02/2025 16:49

@NewMe2024 Hmm I do like them to be honest but yeah less is more I guess. I see some routines which have tretinoin, acids, vitamin C, every day and double cleansing twice a day and its clear peoples skin barrier is toast. I think Angie of Hot and Flashy fame is one of them actually her skin barrier is sooo stripped.

This sounds like a good plan! @28Fluctuations please can I ask about the products that you use? Which soap? Normal standard E45 cream or the special face one? And which suncream and body oil?

I'm really enjoying reading this thread op. Thanks for starting it.
