If you are a bit older what do you actually spend and use at home for your skincare?

If you are late 30's to late 40's can you share your at home skincare and also roughly what you spend. I am really interested injectables or "tweakments" you get done at a clinic although you can list them of course but more in what you use at home yourself so for example at home devices.

I have always spent a bit more on things like actives such as copper peptides and tretinoin but saved money on cleansers and moisturisers. However I recently realised my cheap as chips balm cleanser was stripping my skin and causing it to dry out so tried a sample size of the Elemis Pro-collagen cleanser and am really liking it. I also tried a sample size of the biologique recherche P50 Lotion and also am really enjoying and am finding better results than with my usual Alpha H Liquid Gold.

Another beauty splurge been my current body LED mask which I enjoy using and this year at Christmas I spent £240 on products from NIOD.

I don't spend a lot on myself in other areas but I enjoy skincare but should I really become a "luxury" skincare woman? Are these products actually better? I don't really know what is normal either as a lot of women I know spend a lot on nails and eyelash appointments and get botox but don't really spend much on skincare. Others seem to use Medik8 exclusively which is quite spendy.

Oof I thought ‘a bit older’ meant folks like me at 53 but I’ll leave you babies in your 30s to your thread 😆😆

My skin is looking fab though.

No please do share when I say older I mean any age over mid 30's really. I am 47 for reference!

I actually prefer often to hear from women older than me because then you can actually see what works not that at 53 you are that much older than me at all!

Relative to my own age I was tentatively thinking it might be aimed at women over maybe 70 or 75 …

@QuaterMiss Ah sorry, I just meant not like 20 - 35, but I'd still love to hear your routine!

I’m 49. I use cerave hydrating cleanser or an Elemis balm cleanser with cloth. Ren exfoliator. Then in the day a hyaloric (sp?) serum and cerave moisturiser with spf. At night use use prescription tret every other day and Clarins facial oiil.
Nothing like Botox or fillers but I love a bit of laser and I’ve had microneedling too.

glassglob · 31/01/2025 19:28

@DustyMaiden Oh dear I've really messed up with my title I see! I'm 47 so certainly no baby!

Is the clarins serum good and also do you think the elemis balm is the best one?

I'm older, mid 60s, and people often comment on how good my skin is. Not sure if it's genetic or not, my siblings also have good skin.

I use a very basic soap, usually Simple soap or similar. Wash with soap and water twice a day, three times if necessary after exercise etc. Then I have a huge tub of E45 cream which I use as a moisteriser.

That's it, I probably spend less than £10 a year and would spend more if I needed to. But I have adopted the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" policy of skincare.

I wouldn't have botox if you paid me.

Glitchymn1 · 31/01/2025 19:30

Weeps… I’m a bit older 🤣
I love Liz Earle cleanser, Estée Lauder the serum sorry can’t recall name, SBC rose hip gel, also Aldi moisturisers. I am oily, so skin only just stopped getting the odd spot. Upside is, no lines, wrinkles. People think I get Botox (I haven’t, too scared). Always used spf 50, to stop spots getting a suntan 😒 so skin is now good. I’m 46.

I thought she was meaning us proper oldies…not 30 something’s!

StMarie4me · 31/01/2025 19:35

I use Aldi skin care. Sporadically. At 62 my skin is great tbh.

Zippitydoodaa · 31/01/2025 19:36

I'm 66 ( a few people tell me I look younger, which gives me a wee boost) and do my own micro needling .
I use Asda Tiger Moon serum and moisturiser, and only recently discovered Aldi Q10 night and day cream .

I think balm cleansers are much of a muchness. The Elemis one smells lovely but I think they’ll all give you same results.

Pigeonqueen · 31/01/2025 19:40

I’m 44 and have spent 20 years (a while back) working for Clinique and then Chanel. Despite this I actually think spending a lot is pointless and I have a very basic routine now…! I use Body Shop cleansing balm to remove make up, rub it all over my face and then remove with a cheap facial wipe of some sort and then wash residue off with Nivea blue face wash. For night cream I use Nivea cheap night cream (about £3 in superdrug) and for day cream I just buy whatever is on offer around £10 as long as it has a good high SPF, at least 30. People always comment on my skin and say I have no wrinkles (I don’t think that’s true)! I was the area sun consultant for Clinique for a while and it’s been drilled into me how important sun protection is. But I don’t think it has to be super expensive. Personally I would never have fillers / Botox etc.

Ilovelowry · 31/01/2025 19:41

At night I take off my makeup with a cleansing balm and a flannel from superdrug. Then I put thick Cerave cream on.

In the morning I have recently started cleansing too which it had never occurred to me to do before, then I put Cerave day cream with 25spf.

I use Erborian CC cream during the day.

My DD bought me a box of The Ordinary for Xmas, but I haven't worked out what I should do with it all yet. It's niacinamide etc

So about £20 a month if you break it down. I'm 47 and my main skincare concern is keeping my hairy chin and neck at bay and keeping on top of my excema with hydrocortisone, which is a bit like whack-a-mole.

I did try Buffet and Rosehip oil (smell of fish) and Vitamin C serum and Retinol from The Ordinary at one point, but I don't think I could see any difference in my skin.

I am following though as I'm sure I should probably do more.

70 this year. Wash off cleanser or soap, toner, Liveable age spot serum, moisturiser with SPF. Sane routine with Nivea Soft at night. Often mistaken for mid 50s

SoScarletItWas · 31/01/2025 19:49

OK here’s what I do to have people tell me I look early 40s. Clearly they are lying as I’m 53, but I’ll take it.

I use Inkey List hyaluronic acid and collagen peptide serums in the morning. Add vitamin C a few times a week when I get up early enough.

Evening is hyaluronic plus Tret which I used to get from TretWorld but need to find where they’ve gone now. I use this barely weekly, just when I feel in need of a bit of oomph.

Daily moisturiser is nothing posher than Olay Regenerist. Same night cream for non-Tret nights.

Cleanser - I use a salicylic acid foaming cleanser from Superdrug under the shower in the mornings.

I honestly believe that consistency is as important as the products. My stuff is all pretty basic and fragrance free.

Plus I don’t smoke, I never sunbathe, and I drink so much water I basically float.

I’ve got annoying marionette lines just starting to show. My eyes crinkle when I smile so I suppose the crow’s feet have landed. But I don’t have frown lines.

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 31/01/2025 19:49

Botox. SPF 50 every day. Whatever night cream I can find for under £5.

I honestly don't think expensive creams and shit like that actually works. And if they do, the results are going to be minimal.

Might as well just spend 320 on Botox every 5 months and stop thinking about it.

CorneliaStreet · 31/01/2025 19:53

I’m late forties and have found that more layers of lighter products works better than a heavy moisturising cream. I like Korean skincare, but mix in Western brands too.

So double cleanse in the evening with a balm then a cream cleanser, some kind of hydrating toner or essence, then a serum and then a moisturiser, but nothing too heavy. In the morning I’ll swap out the double cleanse for gel cleanser (lots of good, non-stripping ones out there) and use a sunscreen instead of moisturiser. Pretty much exclusively use Korean sunscreens as they are so much better.

I’m a total beauty product addict so the products change around a lot, but currently using:

Heimish All Clean cleansing balm
Ordinary squalene cleanser
Byoma Milky Moisture cleanser
Dr Ceracle kombucha essence
Dermalogica Vitamin C serum in the mornings and Q&A azelaic acid serum in the evening (only have the Dermalogica as got it in an advent, would never pay that much for a serum. It is very lovely though!)
Elemis Pro-collagen night cream
Purito Soft Touch sunscreen

Also exfoliate a couple of times a week (favourite for this is the Murad AHA/ BHA cleanser) and am trying out some samples of retinol serums here and there (don’t think they are doing much, probably need tret if I want to go down the proper retinol route, but I’m a bit scared of that).

coxesorangepippin · 31/01/2025 19:58

I'm 42 and don't spend much at all

Nivea blue tin, or aldi Q10

CoverGirl etc make-up

A bottle of foundation lasts me a year

APurpleSquirrel · 31/01/2025 20:01

I'm 45 & use Sukin Cream Cleanser; Aldi Q10 Eye Cream, Aldi Q10 Serum & either Aldi Q10 Day or Night Cream. So in total about £10 in total?

BadSkiingMum · 31/01/2025 20:04

If you want to look younger, lie flat on your back* for a day. 😁

*Seriously, I did this for a day due to a bad back and was pleasantly surprised when I looked in the mirror. Unfortunately I was in too much pain to really appreciate it!

soupyspoon · 31/01/2025 20:06

Im in my 50s and a couple of years ago discovered Nuxe. Love the stuff. No idea if its good for my skin, probably doesnt tighten it up or anything but I cant get enough of the smell. Addictive
