If you are a bit older what do you actually spend and use at home for your skincare?

If you are late 30's to late 40's can you share your at home skincare and also roughly what you spend. I am really interested injectables or "tweakments" you get done at a clinic although you can list them of course but more in what you use at home yourself so for example at home devices.

I have always spent a bit more on things like actives such as copper peptides and tretinoin but saved money on cleansers and moisturisers. However I recently realised my cheap as chips balm cleanser was stripping my skin and causing it to dry out so tried a sample size of the Elemis Pro-collagen cleanser and am really liking it. I also tried a sample size of the biologique recherche P50 Lotion and also am really enjoying and am finding better results than with my usual Alpha H Liquid Gold.

Another beauty splurge been my current body LED mask which I enjoy using and this year at Christmas I spent £240 on products from NIOD.

I don't spend a lot on myself in other areas but I enjoy skincare but should I really become a "luxury" skincare woman? Are these products actually better? I don't really know what is normal either as a lot of women I know spend a lot on nails and eyelash appointments and get botox but don't really spend much on skincare. Others seem to use Medik8 exclusively which is quite spendy.

I'm 50 & have used simple face gel & nivea cream in the blue tub for over 20 years. I also finish off with simple vitamin C serum. I've been told I look younger than my 50 yrs.

glassglob · 01/02/2025 11:28

@Mytholmroyd "I have also taken NMN/NAC/pterostilbene for a few years now." Hmm this is interesting! I did take NAC as some point in the past so will need to look back into that kind of thing. I did used to make my own Vitamin C Spray but I am currently trialling various ones at the moment to see what I like. I think you are correct that it is proven to have an effect a lot of the formulations on the market aren't great to be honest so perhaps you are wise sticking with your home brew!

Things that work: low/no sugar, nutritious diet with good fats, drinking water, exercise that makes you puff, plenty of sleep.

Skincare that works: spf, tret, red light masks. Keeping your skin clean and moisturised with anything suitable (Cerave, Nivea, etc. all good)

Things to avoid: sugar, sun, UPFs, smoking, stress, sleeping with makeup on, clogging products (balms) and over stripping with acids.

way easier said than done though!

Well I do think Blue Nivea is a classic for a reason!

Honestly im a bog standard. I wash with soap (simple or dove bar) then use a L'Oréal factor 50 day cream and an Olay night cream. I'm 43. Sun prevention is the best thing.
I tried magical products like Vichy and vit v drops hylauronic acid drops and my skin burned from it all so I keep it simple.

glassglob · 01/02/2025 11:33

@NewMe2024 I think I do most of that, although I do have a bit of a sweet tooth but I try to limit my intake! I do agree about over stripping the skin although I also think its very person dependent, my skin can take a lot of acid exfoliation as its quite thick and naturally oily but then the inky list balm was too harsh for it, go figure!

No treatments for me. Once you start you have to keep going and it does not look natural. Grow old gracefully, embrace it. I wash my face with an exfoliating scrub ( boots charcoal one) every other day. In between I use hot water only. I moisturise with elemis once a day. That is it. People don't believe my age either, think I'm younger.

faithbuffy · 01/02/2025 11:34

I'm about to turn 41

Use skin and me for tret
Like a balm cleanser if I have makeup on otherwise soap and glory peaches and clean
Elemental herbology cell nourish serum
Some form of vitamin c
I chop and change with moisturisers

No fillers or facials

Pretty happy with my skin

My Dad and DB used to sing a horrible song to me about being spotty heavens that's awful @Oldraver - the sort of thing that stays with you forever and they probably did it without a second thought.

Glad to hear your skin is comment worthy now though!

My mum is like that, very sensitive I am not but its been tough to find her products she can tolerate especially with an spf. She uses the L'oreal with an SPF as well the revitalift day cream so perhaps that's a good shout for those with sensitive skin?

I agree that we are probably wasting our 💰 on luxury products and could probably do it cheaper.

But I enjoy using the products, it feels like a bit of luxury every day. My skin is sensitive so finding something that works is fab.

Yeah Revitalift sensitive I think is mine

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/02/2025 11:46

I'm 54. After years of spending a fortune on lotions and potions, and dodgy skin, I wash my face with a gentle cleansing bar - £4/month (https://missionpebble.com/) and moisturise with a very cheap Nivea face moisturiser with spf in the day, also about £4 month-6 weeks, Aldi about and BioOil at night, about £10 every 6 months.

so maybe £10/month tops, abd ny skin looks the best it ever has.

It works for me - I don't do it every day on my face and neck/ cleavage and I use it on all the rough bits like elbows and knees and especially the dry skin on my calves which nothing else seems to stop.

Anyone tried the micro needling method like the Gluv beauty?

glassglob · 01/02/2025 11:49

@Mytholmroyd I do microneedling at home but I haven;t tried a system like the gluv one yet. I'd need to be very sure of what was in the solution before I did mind but it looks interesting.

Since my late 30s (when I went back to work after kids and could justify the spend) I've used:

Clinique mild face wash
Make up removal wipes. Used to use MAC but became too hard to get so now use simple
Clinique mild toner (only after makeup removal or too drying)
Estée Lauder advanced night repair
La Mer moisturizing soft lotion. Ridiculously expensive but I have yet to find an alternative with the same deep moisture without greasiness quality. Often go without this and just leave the night repair to do its thang. I think someone like Dr Hauschka recommended that you do serum without moisture at night. Works for me but I historically had quite oily skin
I also use nip + fab facial scrub glycolic extreme 2/3 times a week - really sloughs off any rough bits.

Anyway, I'm heading for 49 and my skin looks a good 10 years younger.

Snackpocket · 01/02/2025 11:54

I’m 43 this year and use mainly products by Paula’s Choice or Clinique. Weirdly I’ll use any old face wash but like decent moisturisers, exfoliating products etc. But as someone has already alluded to, the secret to good skin is lifestyle. Diet, fluid intake, sun exposure are the biggest factors on how good your skin is. No amount of products will undo the damage from poor eating habits or too much sun!

Yes there didn't seem to be any information on that!

glassglob · 01/02/2025 12:08

@joanofaardvark A friend and I clubbed together and then split a tub of La Mer in our 20's, it was nice but it didn't really do anything special for my skin but it was very oily then, perhaps I'd get more out of it now in my 40's? I am just trying the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum and my skin does look nice today, I'm looking really for a nice restorative serum to use on the nights I am not using actives.

Yeah I remember and yeah it is Dr Hauschka who advises you just use the toner at night to let your skin do its own thing. I was a huge devotee of Dr Hauschka in my early 20's at one point and used to get their facials as well but my skin ended up a total mess, looking back I think I got fungal acne from the cleansing cream! However I actually still love some of their products like the rose cream and the rejuvenating mask. However back to the point, I do think if your skin can go without it then it is good to let your skin breath a bit at night if you are oily and I do that myself sometimes, also apparently if you apply your glycolic then just go to bed with nothing else overnight it boosts the collagen stimulating properties!

Or smoking - I saw a study several (many?) years ago of identical twins one who smoked/sunbathed and one who didn't. The differences were stark.

glassglob · 01/02/2025 12:10

@Snackpocket Yes I quite agree! Luckily I have used tretinoin and high factor SPF daily since my teens and have always been a sun avoider and had a healthy lifestyle but I'm always interested in new ways to finesse things!

I get more wrinkly when I'm dehydrated so my skin care is to drink!

I love the smell and effect of the Sunday Riley CEO face cream so I hunt Vinted and buy from there as it's £60 otherwise.

I did find a boots no.7 that was similar so those are my go too, I like the lighter vitamin C creams.

Otherwise I'm a basic, flannel wash with soap person as well.

Mytholmroyd · 01/02/2025 12:12

The naked and thriving oils are good I find - many moisturisers bring me out on spots (even at my advanced age) in a couple of days but that doesn't and it smells divine.

Another one that was fine was this Sunday Riley ICE cream that I won in a raffle and didn't realise how expensive it was - might have eked it out a bit more if I had! But it was lovely.

Despite my above post I do not think that all things are created equally. I tried a couple of the Aldi dupes a few years ago when my friends were raving about them. I tried the one in the silver pot for about £8 and another one rumoured to be a Clarins dupe.

Neither of them suited my skin, they were too heavy for me and they were really perfumed, particularly the crème de la mer dupe in the silver pot, actually made my eyes water.

LoudPlumDog · 01/02/2025 12:19

I’m 54, not a single wrinkle, don’t lie out in the harsh Australian sun, drink plenty of water.

I use PONDS COLD CREAM morning and night to cleanse.
Warm flannel to remove.
E45 cream in the morning
SPF 50 (always) La Rosy Poche
Olay moisturiser at night.

Thats it, nothing fancy or expensive.
