If you are a bit older what do you actually spend and use at home for your skincare?

glassglob · 31/01/2025 19:14

If you are late 30's to late 40's can you share your at home skincare and also roughly what you spend. I am really interested injectables or "tweakments" you get done at a clinic although you can list them of course but more in what you use at home yourself so for example at home devices.

I have always spent a bit more on things like actives such as copper peptides and tretinoin but saved money on cleansers and moisturisers. However I recently realised my cheap as chips balm cleanser was stripping my skin and causing it to dry out so tried a sample size of the Elemis Pro-collagen cleanser and am really liking it. I also tried a sample size of the biologique recherche P50 Lotion and also am really enjoying and am finding better results than with my usual Alpha H Liquid Gold.

Another beauty splurge been my current body LED mask which I enjoy using and this year at Christmas I spent £240 on products from NIOD.

I don't spend a lot on myself in other areas but I enjoy skincare but should I really become a "luxury" skincare woman? Are these products actually better? I don't really know what is normal either as a lot of women I know spend a lot on nails and eyelash appointments and get botox but don't really spend much on skincare. Others seem to use Medik8 exclusively which is quite spendy.

@user6372812 I hear the Augustinus bader moisturiser is amazing but honestly I need to draw the line somewhere! Would love to try it though and then what if it really is that good?

I use soap and cold running water morning and evening, then RockRoseBeauty serum followed by either Nivea day cream or night cream.

I also use RockRoseBeauty facial oil after a shower.

I am in my 50s and skin is now the best it’s ever been!

I'm in your age range. All I use is Simple Refreshing Face Wash, then Simple Rich Moisturiser. About £2.50 each in Tesco. That's it.

I've not found an SPF I like yet, so the hunt is still on for one, but I have no plans to start injectables or retinol or collagen or any of that. I don't like the thought of having to then do it for the rest of my life; woman before us have managed without of centuries anyway and I don't think they look terrible!

For sure nobody has to do all that stuff or any of it although SPF is sensible from a health point of view so I hope you find one you like and I agree its hard to find a good one. As the nice ones are all so expensive you end up not applying them enough and the cheaper one's are all greasy!

I think its also fine if someone wants to do those things, I don't feel I need botox or filler yet but if I did in the future I might consider it but would probably prefer PRP or PRF to be honest.

Don't worry, it isn't so good that you would have to bankrupt yourself to have it.

It's nice and I like it but I wouldn't necessarily rush to repurchase. It certainly isn't the product that makes all the difference in my routine. I bought it in the sale.

RJnomore1 · 31/01/2025 21:12

Ok so regardless of age this is all hugely dependent on your skin type. I only use moisturiser every couple of days in winter and not all in summer for example. That's on advice from my very experienced skin woman based on my skin.

I.S. Clinical are excellent for products but you do need to n ow what your skin needs. I use the resurfacing cleanser and the retinol. I like the Elemis balm for removing makeup, I also use pick glow or Paula's choice bha as a tonic; if I do use moisturiser I use Elemis marine cream and for a primer clarins flash balm. However that concoction would strip the skin off some people.

My friend who is 70 and looks amazing swears by creme de mer...

RJnomore1 · 31/01/2025 21:12

Oh I'm 48!

Oneflewovermydogsbed · 31/01/2025 21:16

I have used various more expensive products over the years but now I have finally found Nivea blue tub about £5 and it really is the cream that leaves my face feeling moisturised

haribonoyoudont · 31/01/2025 21:34

Morning: cleanse (Haeckels marine facial cleanser), moisturise (No.7 protect & perfect), sunscreen (supergoop), eye cream (No.7 future renew serum).

Night: cleanse (micellar water), tone (Haeckels AHA), moisturise (No.7 protect & perfect night cream), facial oil (Haeckels reef complex), lip cream (laneige), eye cream (No.7 future renew serum).

Also good sleep hygiene, drinking loads of water, don't really drink alcohol these days, have never smoked.

I have dry skin, occasionally sensitive. On brands - I don't think it matters too much, but No.7 is a workhorse, it's all good and they have regular 3-for-2 offers and cheap gift sets.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 31/01/2025 21:53

I use Nivea Q10, I have always used Nivea but noticed my skin was really dry with the usual Nivea a couple of years ago. I use a hot cloth cleanser and occasionally toner (or just water). Morning, i use a face wash(currently using Tesco for sensitive skin). If I remember I use eye cream.

I tried retinal recently but all it's done it cause my skin to go red, make my pores really noticeable, and made me to develop sore patches under my eyes. I've never had a problem with my skin other than being really sensitive, never had spot problem, or noticeable pores.

I'll stick to my no fuss regime from now on.

I also drink lots of water, don't smoke (never have), don't really sunbathe (I now wear a hat if I'm out in the sun) and rarely drink alcohol these days.

I'm 47.

familyissues12345 · 31/01/2025 22:24

44 here!

I mix around a little bit as I get a glossybox every month and there's nearly always some sort of face wash/serum etc

I always wash with some sort of cleanser gel, at the moment I have Neutrogenia which is quite nice. Micellar water to take off eye make up. SPF daytime - currently Garnier. Nighttime I have a Nivea older skin one (that's not the actual name!)

That's my general day. Sometimes if I remember I might add some brightening serum, and maybe something eye cream related too.

I have quite good skin, people are always shocked by my age which is nice!

Mahoosivesalad · 31/01/2025 22:33

Dove unscented bar for washing.
Salcura antiac spray which works surprisingly well for my rosacea/peri spots and redness.
Followed by a drop of tisserand jojoba oil, followed by a small blob of the bog standard aveeno cream.

Evening every other day soolantra for my rosacea.

Nothing has worked better. Used to use all sorts of expensive creams and washes and ended up with worse skin.

suki1964 · 31/01/2025 23:08

No point in spending a fortune on a moisturiser , the main ingredient from the cheapest to the most expensive is water

Just find one that your skin likes, be it Aldi/Lidl or Clinique

60 here and my skin has settled nicely into a foaming wash ( to remove makeup ) and a rub over with a wet flannel in the mornings. At the moment My skin is liking Avon Anew, and for a bit of fun I use whatever hyaluronic acid serum to hand

I have the odd wrinkle and Im getting creases around my eyes, but Im 60, not 16. Im not trying to fight aging, Im just trying to help my skin to feel good and allow foundation to go on nicely

Oh yes, it's completely up to each person what makes them feel good. My concern for me is being trapped in an expensive cycle I then feel I can never quit. I may one day have botox, I'm just torn with my reasons for wanting it.

And yes, that is exactly my issue with SPF. The hunt goes on!

buybuysellsell · 01/02/2025 08:35

I'm 42. I've tried Botox but didn't like having an immobile face. It only really looked good in photos.

My hero products are:
ELF holy hydration cleansing balm
Pixi Glow tonic (every other morning)
Clarins self tanning drops
Estée Lauder advanced night repair serum
Drunk Elephant C-Firma serum for day
Sunday Riley ICE cream for night
Emma Hardie Protect & Perfect for day

I do try other products from time to time but these are the ones that work best for me.

I don't use retinols but they are meant to be the most efficacious topical treatments for anti ageing.

mumzof4x · 01/02/2025 08:47

Wow
Sorry but I just wouldn't have the time or patience for so much of any of this
Wash my face with Cetroban dry skin wash
Lather face in emollient usually also cetroban or similar
Get Botox to 11s every 12 weeks
8hrs sleep a night
Fresh air and exercise
Healthy plant based diet
Lots of water
Don't drink alcohol anyway
I'm 54 and love my skin
People often comment of my "glowy" skin
I did try the Esteau Lauder Hyloric Acid once it that was amazing but at £100 a bottle just don't really need it
Look after your inside and usually your outside will follow x

CanelliniBeans · 01/02/2025 08:53

People say I have great skin and few wrinkles and I'm mid 50s.
I use Liz Earle face wash and miccelar water . Then a basic moisturiser with spf that costs around £12 like E45 or boots own. At night I use a thick cheap moisturiser. If I remember.
I've tried expensive stuff and it doesn't give any better results.

Slytherinnnnn · 01/02/2025 09:03

I use Elemis Dynamic resurfacing face wash and facial pads (toner/exfoliation), an Espa serum and moisturiser. Someone recommended those products on here and I love them.

I also use Elemis pro collagen balm and an Eve Lom face mask once a week when I remember.

I feel like I’ve got it right recently adding in the Elemis stuff. Before I made the switch to these things my skin looked dry when I put foundation on, which isn’t very often but it looked cakey.

Amazon often have absolute bargains on Espa’s Christmas gift boxes. Like This one. The serum is about £40 alone, so it is worth stocking up after Christmas once you know you like the products.

chatw0o0p · 01/02/2025 09:37

Am in my late 40s and embracing less is more (after a long time of more is more!).

  • Currently using an oil cleanser that I picked up overseas nearly a year ago! Once that runs out, will try something new.
  • Moisturise using either Cerave or Bubble Cloud Surf Water Cream, which is nice but not very nourishing.
  • Sometimes use Nivea Q10 eye cream.
  • Sun screen (have a big collection that I'm testing out).

Short version - am not spending much on skincare, but get other things done regularly (brows, pedicure, hair) so the money gets spent elsewhere instead.

Have had botox in the past (have one quite deep frown line) and would definitely consider that again for a less annoyed/more relaxed look! 😂

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 01/02/2025 09:40

I’m older with very sensitive skin and just moisturise with raw organic coconut oil. I often get taken for younger.

MrsLeonFarrell · 01/02/2025 09:43

I rarely wear make up and never use foundation which may change things.

Anyway I'm in my 50s and wash my face with water, never soap. I use Olay daily sensitive face cream with SP15 and that's it. I do have great skin but I think that's probably genetics plus the fact I don't tan well so always wear a hat in the sun.

I tend to believe that expensive skin creams are a waste of money but who knows, I might have the skin of a 16 year old if I'd ever used them!

SlapTheMelon · 01/02/2025 09:46

I use foreo UFO for masking, I'm not loyal to any particular serum, I have no 7, the viral snail one that I got from amazon which I like a lot, I just bought Estee lauder serum during sale and my bestie recommended Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant.

For moisturiser I also use whatever is on sale. At the moment I'm using 24K Gold Wrinkle Repair Night Creme and Cerave gel for day. I buy my eye cream from TK maxx the Korean one. And I like Japanese face cleanser, they are gentle and very foamy. I alps use Biore Sun screen gel.

TheOGCCL · 01/02/2025 09:56

I’m almost 49. In my thirties I used things like Clinique, Clarins, Alpha H and Elemis. Thought I had good skin. In my forties I use Cerave, LRP and Dermatica and it’s next level. Even if I look tired or am not happy with my appearance, I can always rely on my skin to be radiant.

I do a Vitamin C mask once or twice a week. Botox on my 11s just because I don’t like looking like I’m frowning. I think it has a psychological effect.

Never found an eye cream that does much. My crow’s feet are quite bad, but I don’t mind that so much.

SPF obviously.

My issue is more around sagging. You can see the scaffolding behind the skin changing. And I have to watch my weight (not get too thin) or that gets worse. I’m not sure what expensive thing would help, definitely not getting fillers.

Mytholmroyd · 01/02/2025 11:11

I have a 1kg bag of food grade L-ascorbic acid (~£13) and dissolve a small amount in hot water and rub it on my skin. Sometimes mix it with a moisturizer. Reading the clinical literature seems to be the only thing that makes a real difference and it's cheap but not stable so needs to be fresh.

I have also taken NMN/NAC/pterostilbene for a few years now.

My work colleagues say I have a portrait in the attic.

Oldraver · 01/02/2025 11:21

Another oldie rocking up (nearly 60)

Sorry have to blather on as need to go back in time

I had shit sporty skin from about 10 and was always teased for it, I occasionally bought Clearasil when I had money and the options back then was that it Anne French. Both felt like paintstripper. I've always had very reactive skin so frankly have never found anything for it, and I rarely use make up. I could occasionally use Clinique foundation

The glorious menopause bought very dry skin so had to find something and came across Badger Balm Damascus Rose. One pot is mainly beeswax the other olive oil. So far my skin can tolerate it.

I don't have any wrinkles though frankly think that's good luck. I was recently told by a few friends I have brilliant skin and I actually teared up as I think mentally I still stuck in the thought of ' I have bad skin'. My Dad and DB used to sing a horrible song to me about being spotty

I agree with you I also get plenty of sleep, I've been eating a veggie whole food diet since my early teens, plenty of exercise, hydration and I've never drank, smoked or sun bathed so my skin is nice I think and I do get compliments on it and I pretty much never wear make up as I don't think I really need it, well I'd look better with it I imagine but I prefer to see my real skin I think.

I do though quite enjoy the nice luxury, pampering feeling you get using a high end product, it just makes me feel a bit fancy which I enjoy and often the formulations are just a bit nicer to use but I do get why some people might find that all a faff I am like that with other things.
