Is this dress a bit dated?

I like it but am aware that apparently floral dresses have “had their day”. I am in my 40s so probably fat face target audience

Mid 40s here too; I think it’s fab and would def wear it (but I’m not super trendy)

CerealPosterHere · 30/01/2025 13:35

I’m not fussed about being super trendy with this dress, I get it’s not edgy fashion. Just don’t want to be a dowdy frump either 🤣. Thanks, will order it and see what it’s like on. Colour might not even suit me as I’m quite pale.

It’s … serviceable. Perfectly nice and inoffensive and not ugly or cheap looking. No one seeing you in it would think you were trying to give a super fashionable impression - but it’s more than acceptable everyday wear. And could carry you to a daytime event with a bit of accessory effort.

Think it suits the larger model with dark hair better than the first one.

Sparkletastic · 30/01/2025 13:45

Love that dress. Timeless I'd say.

Winterskyfall · 30/01/2025 14:09

I think it's lovely but I don't follow trends. I wear what I like and I really don't care what's 'in' or 'out'. Personally, I think dressing to trends should be dated, people should have their own individual style and not be told what to wear. I'm not particularly helpful considering your question. 😉

It could look amazing with pale colouring.

MsWintertowne · 30/01/2025 14:21

Who tells people what to wear, @Winterskyfall?

As far as I can see, most people dress as if they live in the 2020s - because those are the sort of clothes available to buy in shops and even pre-owned.

A few people make a deliberate effort to dress as if they live in some previous century. No one stops them, though some of the garments may prove a little impractical.

But the UK is a relatively free country. Other than a uniform I think everyone can choose what they wear? I’d be interested to hear how you manage to distinguish yourself from all your fellow humans buying the ‘trends’ of the era?

MissyB1 · 30/01/2025 14:23

I've been eyeing up that dress! I like the style and the pattern is pretty. My issue is I have a scrawny neck and chest so it's probably a bit low at the V for me.

Snowmanscarf · 30/01/2025 14:26

I think it’s a nice Spring Sumner dress, and one that could wear to the pub, the theatre, festivals, school run etc , depending on what accessories, footwear etc you wear.

Edited

A person who isn't sure whether to buy a dress they like because it may be dated because florals have "had their day" is allowing the fashion powers that be to tell them what to wear. Who decides the trends? Designers, magazines, the buyers for the company, etc. I've seen this same question posted numerous times, people not knowing whether something they want to wear is ok because it may not be on trend.

Garlicworth · 30/01/2025 14:46

@Winterskyfall - on the assumption you're not being deliberately obtuse, I'm also interested to hear how you distinguish yourself from all the sheep wearing contemporary styles!

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 30/01/2025 14:55

Is it the brand that is the issue? To name only a few Nobody's Child, Erdem , Sister Jane Zimmerman and Alémais are still heaving with florals. You [general you] might hate all of them but I don't think anyone would query if they were dated.

I agree with Snowmanscarf.

I buy things I like, it doesn't matter if they are on trend. I keep clothes I like, it doesn't matter how old they are if I like them I like them. When choosing an item I don't wonder if it's dated, I just care whether I like it. Not sure why people are getting so het up about this, I was just suggesting OP buy what she likes and not worry about what's in style. I don't think anyone wearing what they love looks dated.

SnapdragonToadflax · 30/01/2025 15:05

It's a pretty dress, and I don't think floral dresses are going anywhere yet. I know we keep being told they're out of fashion, but people keep wearing them and they're starting to come back into the shops for spring/summer.

The only thing I don't like is that bum-level tier - rather unflattering. But not the end of the world. And it has pockets!

CerealPosterHere · 30/01/2025 15:07

I fully admit I shouldn't be such a sheep and shouldn't care. Seen too many posts/tiktok videos sniggering at middle aged women wearing floral dresses and denim jackets and saying its like a middle aged, middle class uniform so guess I am consciously trying to step away from being such a cliche.

I do like the overall look of the dress/fabric though. Bit unsure about the slight "tier" in the skirt section so will see what it looks like on. I agree it seems quite a multi function dress, work, lunch with friends, go to the pub, etc.

I like it … mid 40s here

Attictroll · 30/01/2025 15:11

It's a nice dress... not trendy but could be styled better. Tbh nothing in Fatface is trendy but if you like it go for it

I'm a bit useless at styling which is why I like dresses as I just tend to throw them on and hope for the best! Wouldn't really know what cardigan shoes, etc to wear so probably would be in sneakers and a denim jacket 😞

Why are we pretending like trends don’t exist, or that it’s possible to dress in an untrendy way? I thought it’s universally known, for example, that skinny jeans are no longer trendy, yet you can still buy them. That doesn’t make them magically trendy, it just means enough people still like them enough to make it profitable to continue making them. Yet they are considered dated.

There is certainly a vocal contingent of people out there ‘telling’ people what to wear by basically shaming them if they wear the wrong things. You can either choose to care or not, but they do exist. Personally I can’t be bothered to keep up with what is fashionable at any given age. I have no idea what I’m ‘supposed’ to be wearing at age 44, other than it’s not likely what I do end up wearing.

MrsJHernandez · 30/01/2025 15:34

I'm 41, so you're not getting a young person's opinion from me I'm afraid! I like floral dresses!

I like this dress, apart from the seam around the hips. It would be really unflattering on me. But if you like it and think it'll suit your figure - go for it!

Jellycats4life · 30/01/2025 15:37

It’s not dowdy or frumpy. Get it, and try not to GAF what anyone thinks!

SnidelyWhiplash · 30/01/2025 15:38

I think it’s frumpy, sorry.

It’s not too bad on the first model, but it does no favours for the larger one.

MulberryPeony · 30/01/2025 15:39

It’s the tier that puts me off OP. I was going to say just don’t wear it with a denim jacket and white trainers as I think the overall vibe is going to look a bit outdated. If you love it then go for it but the fact you’ve asked says you are unsure. If you don’t LOVE it, I say don’t buy it. (Age 47 and 1/2)

thehorsesareallidiots · 30/01/2025 15:40

It's... fine. It's neither hideous nor particularly stylish and it doesn't look particularly cheap, at least in these shots. It's fairly safe. It will give "middle-aged mum uniform five years ago" vibes if you pair it with a denim jacket and flat white trainers, though. If you want to avoid that, wear Birks like the model or go a bit more left field with the trainers.

MorrisZapp · 30/01/2025 15:42

I think it's lovely. I have a similar one from Oliver Bonas which gives a vaguely 90s, housekeeper face down in the begonias, opera loving detactive vibe. And why bloody not.

Mrburnshound · 30/01/2025 15:44

I definitely wouldnt wear with a denim jacket or white trainers, that specific look was popular around 10 years ago, if you dont want to look dated i would avoid this.

The dress is fine though, very school run/hanging round the house style.
