Is this dress a bit dated?

I like it but am aware that apparently floral dresses have “had their day”. I am in my 40s so probably fat face target audience

Well is there an argument that not trendy = classic - people have been wearing floral dresses for donkey's years. I like it - bit pale for me but in a different colour I would buy it. If you like it and it suits you - buy it is my advice.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 30/01/2025 21:26

I’m also in my forties and I’m not keen on the style, sorry. I do still like floral dresses (even occasionally with a denim jacket!) but this one really doesn’t do it for me… I think you could still get the vibe you’re looking for with a slightly more up to date twist.

I don’t get the volume of posters saying “don’t follow trends” on Style and Beauty?! Why you here then 🤣

I’m not totally ruled by trends but I wouldn’t want to look too dated so I do take some notice. So for example I’ve moved on from skinny jeans in favour of a barrel leg.

For me, the dress is nice. Nothing from Fatface is overly trendy so just be careful how you style it.

Because style and trends are not the same thing. Someone who wears what they like, and what suits them, will generally look more stylish than someone who blindly follows the latest trend just because they think they have to and who ditches clothes they actually like simply because they are "dated" (stupid word).

Yes.

botanicalprint · 30/01/2025 22:15

@NattyTurtle59 although tbf the dress is neither stylish nor trendy

Nikki7506 · 31/01/2025 06:55

It's lovely!........order it and try it on.....then you'll know how you feel in it💖

Bodenne · 31/01/2025 06:57

I like florals but not this one-as my nan would say it looks like a pair of curtains. Too busy and garish. Neither of the models look good.

Hwi · 31/01/2025 08:00

Gorgeous dress!

Pumpkincozynights · 31/01/2025 08:10

I like it. Dresses are my go to though.
Whats wrong with wearing a floral dress?
Do men aged 40 plus get ripped to shreds for wearing bagging combat shorts with random slogan t shirts and trainers?

Gowlett · 31/01/2025 08:33

I don’t necessarily think it’s about trends, with OP.
It’s about your own gut feeling, as you get older.

You keep going the your old reliable / favourite styles…
But they just don’t feel right anymore, somehow.

Yes, of course style moves on & fashion influences.
But I’d tend towards this dress rather than a satin skirt.

Would I like a fabulous midlife style evolution?
Bring it on! But, I do still like floral dresses… Hmmmn.

I really think this is where a lot of women at TBH.
This is what the shops have for us. I don’t do Zara.

I’ve got brown birkis I could wear with it or green and pink adidas specizals. Got a nice quilted Mint velvet jacket which might work, or a bright pink cardigan if too warm for a jacket. I was half joking on the denim jacket and trainers as I know that would not be a trendy look overall.

I think this dress with pink Spezials and a pink cardigan (buttoned up and tucked under if it isn't already cropped) sounds fab

MsWintertowne · 31/01/2025 08:49

Not so!

(But here one is shouted down for suggesting anything other than Fat Face.)

thiswaypleasethankyou · 31/01/2025 08:51

I am not a fatface fan at all, but I really like that!

Queenofthejabs · 31/01/2025 08:55

It’s fat face, they don’t aim to be stylish or trendy. They aim at casual and outdoorsy and their average customer is in their forties.

its a perfectly fine dress. Neither stylish or trendy, and fine for every day wear. No one will really give it a second look and think much on it to be honest.

I wasn't talking about the dress though, I was responding to a poster who questioned why people who don't follow trends are on Style & Beauty.

Dhokotera · 31/01/2025 09:49

It looks like a really comfortable dress on days when you really cannot be bothered. I am in my mid 40s and would not wear that as it would really look frumpy on me and add a few more years. But if you like it, why not?

I definitely wouldnt wear with a denim jacket or white trainers, that specific look was popular around 10 years ago, if you dont want to look dated i would avoid this.

The dress is fine though, very school run/hanging round the house style.

I find ideas like this very odd.

Who decides something is 'dated'? Just a fashion journo who's being paid to whip up interest in something 'new' or manufactures who want to sell more stuff.

FWIW the dress, white trainers etc is still being worn in 2024 (by mainstream newsreaders on TV like Sophie Rayworth, Fiona Bruce, etc etc.)

Trainers are comfy, longer dresses are comfy, they don't have to be floral, but what the heck?

That's great- it proves that fashion is adaptable to almost any age.

I think the 'oldest' look favoured by my elderly mum and her friends is the long midi skirt (but not maxi) with a T shirt not tucked in.

And dresses found at Seasalt or Roman.

And I find your post odd. The poster you quoted specifically said that the look was popular 10 years ago so would look dated today (although I'd say it was more 5ish years ago, I don't remember seeing it much in 2015). OP asked if the dress looked dated, so it's clearly something she buys into.

I just do not understand posters who come onto a S&B thread specifically about trends or whether an outfit has had its day, and argue that trends aren't or shouldn't be a thing. We're all aware we can wear whatever we like, but if OP wants to avoid looking dated that's her business. When something is incredibly popular it does begin to look 'of its time'. Brown living rooms of the 70s, blue mascara, perms and legwarmers of the 80s, the moustache tattoo on the index finger of the early 2010s... If I went out tonight in a mini bandage skirt, vest top and stiletto heels I'd look like I'd been asleep since 2010, you can't deny that certain outfits do look of their time.

Back on topic - I don't like the dress personally, but it's not my style. I agree it would be dated if styled a certain way, but if you have a more boho style you could probably pull it off.

Arrivederla · 31/01/2025 11:50

My concern would be the quality. I've bought a few things from Fat Face over the last couple of years and nothing has washed well and kept its shape (with the exception of jeans).

Cotton dresses and skirts have looked awful after a few (careful) washes

This does worry me. I’ve had a viscose dress from M&S which was about 7 inches shorter after a wash at 30 degrees and barely covered my bum. I know cotton can shrink as well though maybe not as much as viscose.

But I don’t like non breathable polyester as it makes me sweat. So not sure what else to do/other options.

I’d wear it. I have no idea what is in or out.

Normallynumb · 31/01/2025 11:57

I like it and I would happily wear that
It's timeless
However I would think about the fabric composition.
Ecovero Lenzig is similar to viscose but heavier and cotton content is minimal so it's hard to tell how it would hang
Fat face isn't as reliable as it was
