Bikini at 40??

Following a conversation with friends where everyone was talking about best tankinis and one pieces… is 40 too old to wear a bikini? I’m talking about a tasteful, well fitting one! I am 5’4” and 8 stone. Doubting myself but tankinis and shorts just feel way too frumpy!!

I spent a lot of my youth being too shy and self conscious to enjoy wearing a bikini rushing between the pool and and a wrap

One of the joys of being middle aged is that people generally aren't as interested in you and therefore there is much more freedom to wear what you want!

Agree with this! I now wear bikinis, despite being in late 40s and flabby!

Sneezeless · 15/01/2025 15:19

I first wore a bikini aged 50 so no you are not too old. I've seen plenty of "elderly" women wear bikinis whilst on holiday. No one cares anyway.

ZaZathecat · 15/01/2025 15:24

Absolutely not too old! I only started wearing one a few years ago and I'm in my 60s. I'm more confident now than I was in my 20s!

Starlight1984 · 15/01/2025 15:32

I wear (and have always worn - no matter what age) a swimming costume at the gym / local pool but not once on holiday abroad!

Not sure when 40 became "old" either 😭

WithIcePlease · 15/01/2025 15:50

Have your friends never been abroad? Never seen a standard beach holiday location? They are being ridiculous.

I'm 58 and wear a bikini. Size similar to you. Or do they think only young thin people should wear bikinis?

DSis 69 and she wears one and looks great.

Maybe Helen Mirren would like a chat with them. Isn't there a quote (approx) from her that 'the older I've got the more I've learnt to tell people to fuck off'.

I live in the Caribbean - 45 and wear bikinis. It wouldn't even occur to me not to.
Just like you decide each day what to wear, the same should be the case on the beach...

Nichebitch · 15/01/2025 16:44

I absolutely despise this kind of thing. Saying that one shouldn’t wear a bikini after 40 implies:

  • bikinis are for attractive bodies
  • women after 40 are not physically attractive
but little girls wearing them are ok? maybe I’m just too European
JaceLancs · 15/01/2025 16:53

I’m 60 and not that skinny and have at least 3 bikinis - I prefer a good structured bra top and mid rise bottoms - my favourite is a plain black one from bravissimo

very similar to this but the bottoms are not as high

Milano Bikini Top by Bravissimo | Black | Balconette Bikini

The Milano bikini is an underwired, non-padded, balconette style top that gives a great rounded shape and has a little more coverage to help you feel secure.

Bottoms more like this - can roll up or down - I have a similar one from Next in a floral pattern

Meh, when on holiday make sure to go to a beach frequented by local people. In my experience, they’re there to swim. Some wear one pieces, some wear bikinis. They’re often just happy to be there cooling off. Choose something you love and don’t let anything take that away from you

EllaPaella · 16/01/2025 13:33

I'm 45 and only started wearing bikinis two years ago. So much easier to dry after use in hot weather - I have no idea why it took me so long to start wearing them.

Windsorlady · 17/01/2025 16:47

Im 68 yrs and size 16 but when on a hot beach i wear a black bikini..
I dont care and no one else does either ..have fun

EveryOtherNameTaken · 17/01/2025 17:33

Do it!!!

The anticipation of being exposed and looking a certain way is a mental thing.

As soon as you're in your resort, you'll wonder why you ever gave a shit!

I'm in my 50's and always have worn a bikini.

Every age, size, colour and texture will be swanning about in bikinis enjoying the sun.

BuntyCollocks · 17/01/2025 17:52

I finally found my bikini groove at 40 after losing half my body weight and a tummy tuck. I plan to wear pretty much nothing forever more 🤣

TheLurpackYears · 17/01/2025 17:55

I'm considering one for my next holiday. I'm nearing 50, nearing 16 stone and 5'8".
As above, have you never been on a beach abroad before?
