Bikini at 40??

Following a conversation with friends where everyone was talking about best tankinis and one pieces… is 40 too old to wear a bikini? I’m talking about a tasteful, well fitting one! I am 5’4” and 8 stone. Doubting myself but tankinis and shorts just feel way too frumpy!!

I'm 50 and have a good figure and wear a flattering, well-fitted bikini on holiday. As long as the bikini is tasteful, and covers all the necessary parts, then go for it!!

mdinbc · 14/01/2025 19:24

I'm 63 and still wear a bikini. Wear what makes you comfortable.

I plan to wear one forever. As long as its well fitted and flattering what's the issue?

Same here. I'm 48 this year and was just looking at new bikinis. The thought of wearing a costume makes me feel hot and claustrophobic 😄

theculture · 14/01/2025 19:27

I spent a lot of my youth being too shy and self conscious to enjoy wearing a bikini rushing between the pool and and a wrap

One of the joys of being middle aged is that people generally aren't as interested in you and therefore there is much more freedom to wear what you want!

honeylulu · 14/01/2025 19:27

Of course you can wear one. I went to Greece last year for my 50th and wore bikinis (find them so much more convenient for toileting, wearing under clothes etc) and so did every other woman in the resort - all ages shapes and sizes. Didn't occur to me to think anything of it at all. We were just enjoying our holidays!

40 is 30 these days. To be honest its more if your skin is toned or not to look good in it. I had very saggy skin at 18 so i never wore it sadly.

MinnieMountain · 14/01/2025 19:31

I’ll always remember going to the beach in Sardinia as a slim 23yo in my swimming costume and noticing that the vast majority of women were in bikinis.

I also swim lengths in a sport bikini.

Userengage · 14/01/2025 19:32

I own one swimsuit for actual swimming at the pool at home and about 20 bikinis for any other time that I am semi naked near water. What is a “flattering, tasteful” bikini? I’m not wearing a thong bikini, more Brazilian style pants.

When men stop coming to the beach topless with it all hanging out, I’ll consider putting away my bikinis but even then, I make no promises.

9ToGoal · 14/01/2025 19:32

You're not too old. Never.

Hot weather, as little clothing as possible imo bikinis all the way. Obviously not to pop to Asda or collect the kids 😂

Silvertulips · 14/01/2025 19:33

Depends where you are wearing it!

Down Tesco is a no, beach - why not!

Mercurial123 · 14/01/2025 19:37

Anyone who has been to a beach resort will have seen women of all ages and sizes wearing a bikini. Weird post, and why does it matter what size you are?!

AmandaHoldensLips · 14/01/2025 19:38

I'm in my 60s with the figure of a large baking potato. Still wear a bikini and if people don't like it, they can look the other way!

Wear the bikini! And have a pina colada while you're at it.

You are fucking kidding.

No 40 is still 40.

I can't imagine not wearing one on holiday. My figure isn't what it was, I am fatter, have cellulite and my boots need major scaffolding but people can tell I'm a bit fat with saggy boobs when I'm dressed so what difference does it make. In fact swimsuits are way more problematic for my saggy boobs than a bikini.

They can tell your boobs are saggy in clothes? You need good bras.

Wishboneswishes · 14/01/2025 19:46

It doesn’t matter if it’s tasteful or flattering (according to who exactly?)
Also doesn’t matter if it’s a size 8 or a size 28.

Wear the bikini if you want to. I thought we were over the whole bikini body conundrum thing 😣

It doesn't matter what bras I buy they are too heavy and not pert enough to sit where they used to. As a result my silhouette is decidedly frumpy, unless I'm in a sports bra. I would have a reduction and lift if I wasn't terrified of the surgery.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/01/2025 19:52

I wear all kinds of swimwear depending on what I'm doing.

I love my high waist bikinis. Admittedly I favour tucking the CS overhang in, primarily for my comfort as free-range wobble isn't comfortable.
I decided that at 30 while adjusting to the changes in my body, that I was not hiding my body for the rest of my life. Baby is now a teenager and I still stand by that.

Im a saggy 38GG and the right bra makes a difference.

Emanwenym · 14/01/2025 19:56

At your advanced age a burkini is the only option,@Happyhappyday ,unless you wear a wet suit.

shrumps · 14/01/2025 19:59

54 - proud bikini wearer. TBH I think it looks weirder to be in a one piece in a hot country - most women, of all shape and sizes are in bikinis.

Abridget7 · 14/01/2025 19:59

Your 50yr old self will tell you to wear that bikini

Howisitnotobvious · 14/01/2025 20:08

Do you judge people who wear them as frumpy? How is age a factor? I wish there was a way people could describe their preferences without being ageist. Wear what you like. I have always preferred a tankini or swimdress, since forever. My age has nothing to do with it.

howsthehair · 14/01/2025 20:18

40 is still very young. You're overthinking this
