Bikini at 40??

Happyhappyday · 14/01/2025 18:10

Following a conversation with friends where everyone was talking about best tankinis and one pieces… is 40 too old to wear a bikini? I’m talking about a tasteful, well fitting one! I am 5’4” and 8 stone. Doubting myself but tankinis and shorts just feel way too frumpy!!

60 here and still rocking my bikinis. Don’t forget when you go to the beaches in Europe the 80 year old local ladies are still in bikinis.
Nobody cares

PinkTonic · 14/01/2025 23:27

I’m late mid 60s and I wear bikinis. I did go through a phase of wearing tankinis but I realised bikinis are much more comfortable and convenient and now I have loads. I like to mix and match.

girljulian · 14/01/2025 23:31

I've always felt uncomfortable in bikinis but I certainly don't think there's an age limit on them! Every year on holiday I'm usually the only woman in a one-piece.

I'm younger than you and I can't wear one any more because I'm too fat and lumpy and ugly but if I was slim like you I definitely would wear one. Have a nice holiday!

No, none of that is why you don’t wear one. You don’t wear one because you feel bad about your body. A bikini body is a body with a bikini on it!

Thats so weird this just popped up in my feed, Im 50 and have a flat stomach but still have wobbly bits (not a stealth boast - just relevant I think? or maybe not?) so Ive always worn bikinis. I have just recently had a panic that Im too old now , and have been online shopping today for swimsuits. This is because I went swimming with my mum (70s) who is more svelte than me, but always wears a swimsuit. She insinuated I was just too old for a bikini as was she. I then kinda noticed that all the women - no matter how thin - over 40 were all in swimsuits. So now I feel like mutton dressed as lamb and I should 'conform'. Last year I cut off my waist length hair to a bob because of this ridiculous conforming bollox which I bitterly regret. So balls to it, this thread has made me decide I am going to keep wearing my bikinis, and showing my wobbly bits with pride.

Scissor · 14/01/2025 23:44

Had a panic last week and bought a tankini and one piece, currently on holiday and wore my favourite bikini today. 56, size 16 on a good day.
Around 60% of the people around the pool today are late 60's, 70's plus and the only one piece I saw was on a woman in her 30's.
Every shape, every size and quite a lot of them are French.
So I'm just not giving any stuffs and reserving the "sensible" panic buys for if I decide to go down a water slide. .. Mr Scissor is no sylph and is happy when I'm smiling, don't think he notices much else.
Enjoy your bikini days for as long as you want. Nobody else cares at all.

I’m assuming you are talking about swimming at a pool at a leisure centre, or health club. One piece swimsuit are the common outfit at such places because it’s all about the exercise and the risk of boob popping out. Bikinis are normal around the pool and on the beach on holiday.

bigkahunaburger · 14/01/2025 23:47

Oh yes I am. I joined just to bob about in the pool, sit in the hot tub, and have coffees on the sun loungers. Ok, so maybe this is why. Oops.

StarlightLady · 15/01/2025 07:24

OP, l’m a little older than you. I’m very much a free spirit, not only do l still wear a bikini on beaches, l often go sans top!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 15/01/2025 09:20

I live in France and go swimming in the local lake a lot in summer. If I go in the morning before work for a long swim, I usually wear the same Speedo one-piece that I'd use for the pool BUT I actually went a bought a bikini for when I want to go for a dip after work because everyone wears them and I felt very conspicuous in my one-piece 😅

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 15/01/2025 09:34

I'm 50 this year and still find a well cut bikini looks better on me than a one piece. Tankinis look dreadful on me, hugely unflattering.

Also when in and out of the pool I find bikinis dry much more quickly avoiding that unsightly damp effect through clothes you get when popping for lunch

I--

It's too old for a bikini. And wine. And holidays and fun for that matter. Rethink your plans OP. 😄

Wear it

trying29 · 15/01/2025 09:45

I find this argument so odd - in no other country do women seem to worry about this. In Europe you see women of all ages and sizes in bikinis. only in the UK do people seem to think you have to cover up as you get older. I am 40, wear bikinis and will continue to. Men dont seem to question this - you see tons of oversized men wearing speedoes with not a care in the world!

It's not so odd. It's the culture or social whatnot that most of us have been raised with. We have to do what we're comfortable doing.

DecayingRelic · 15/01/2025 09:48

wish I could, have not worn one since I was 7😄

SleepyHippy3 · 15/01/2025 09:54

Its so depressing how society still conditions women to believe that as they age there are cut of points for when things turn from „”appropriate” to „”inappropriate”, do the idea only younger women should be wearing things like bikinis or miniskirts, for example. Or when you get to a certain age a woman should absolutely not have long hair, and must cut it short, as it’s more appropriate. And million other things.

OP just wear what you want when you want, what ever age you are. You know a man would never have this problem, as per societies standards.

Peal4 · 15/01/2025 13:52

100% wear it. I wore one on holiday a couple of years ago at 47 and I'll carry on wearing one!

Stickortwister · 15/01/2025 13:59

45 and had 4 children and weigh a lot more than 8 stone and wear one..... And it's not particularly "flattering" or stylish either. I give 0 fucks.

It covers my modesty is comfy and stays where it should when I swim it. I also don't have wet fabric all over my stomach after a swim-a sensation I loathe

Anonymus89 · 15/01/2025 14:10

Who make the rules? The bikini police ? Jesus... just wear what you want. If your friends don't feel comfortable in their bodies to wear bikini that's their problem. Just because they want to wear one piece costume doesn't mean you have to.

Why can't you? I'm assuming you have a body and who gives a fuck what anyone thinks?!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/01/2025 14:38

64 and five pregnancies worth of loose stomach. I still wear a bikini and nobody has thrown anything at me yet! If you go overseas you see women of all shapes and sizes in all kinds of swimwear and nobody at all bothers. So you go for it, OP.

My body is not good and I care what my DH thinks, he will look at it and I feel it will put him off me

I highly doubt that, but if its true - is he Brad Pitt? Regardless you should love yourself and show off your body with pride! (note to self: take own advice!!!).

❓For starters it’s not about him. Secondly, l assume he sees you in less than a bikini at other times?
