Fuck what I can I wear to this wedding?

dumpydumpydumpdump · 04/01/2025 19:17

Son getting married this summer. Her mum is 6ft and slender. She's going to look incredible as MOB

I am short, fat (22-24) and with massive boobs. Like huge!

Feeling a bit panic stricken now.
Don't even know what I want to wear let alone find it.

I like patterns but don't want to look like upholstered armchair.
Like most colours, complexion is fair, mousy hair.

No overt cleavage on show. Calves also fecking hug3 so not too short.

Maybe hat. But I look silly in anything small because of massive boobs and tummy.

Arse also size of a small country.

I am perfectly happy with my size mostly, certainly no motivation to starve. But wtf am I going to wear? I'm going to let him down by looking fucking awful. I jus5 want something chic and comfortable.

Budget - not bothered. I was going to look at bombshell but they gone bust. All the MOB/MOG stuff seems to be for thin elegant Carole Middleton types. Love Carole btw. But I need something for a Miriam Margoles shape.

@dumpydumpydumpdump try having a look on the Adrianna Pappell.com site https://www.adriannapapell.com/collections/plus-size-mother-of-the-bride-dresses as many of these would be suitable for MOG. Although the site is American there are many US companies that ship to the UK. There is a good size chart on there and somewhere on the site are photos of actual wedding guests wearing different dresses.

Great fitting comfortable underwear and fab accessories and you'll look and feel a million dollars.

Has the bride indicated a dress code or is it wear what you want?

I'd suggest taking a look at Veromia Occasions. If you go their website you can find stockists near where you are. Their dresses are so flattering, and they do a mix of solid colours and patterns, along with dipped hems, sleeves and helpful draping.

Jeepers they are all very "Jane McDonald on a Cruise" aren't they?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 05/01/2025 12:10

@bouncydog @dumpydumpydumpdump John Lewis stock Adrianna Pappell and their search facility is one of the best to narrow down the huge selection they stock.

NTmumAutisticteenagemeltdowns · 05/01/2025 12:11

Hello, I haven't had time to read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been suggested and discarded.
I know someone once who was bigger that you, routinely dressed in what could best be described as a black tent, and had the most stunning hair, makeup and accessories. She looked absolutely fabulous.
Wondering if you could do something similar but with a different colour? If you picked a striking colour that suited you you could look amazing. Maybe think of getting something made if budget allows?

Stuck1001 · 05/01/2025 12:12

My mother and I ended up looking longer for her outfit for my wedding than for my dress! Don't feel you have to wear traditional MOB outfits. We found very beautiful flowing palazzo pants with a matching top for my mum and bought some striking jewellery. Nobody wore hats. We tried loads of places including personal shoppers at John Lewis (who were awful) and ended up in Harrods of all places but the outfit was in the sale and actually very cheap. Can you give any idea of your style or styles you like and people might be able to point you in the right direction?

I don't think you know what CBT is or for.

I do, dear. Maybe you’re the one confusing it with CBD.

AIBot · 05/01/2025 12:14

Is there a colour scheme for the wedding? Regardless, it might be worth getting your colours done. I was sceptical, but did it with a friend who was keen. I have to say that any clothes look a lot better in colours that actually suit me.

We used this one for a group booking, but there are probably numerous places offering it.

Thanks so much for all the kind suggestions and sweet comments about not comparing. Scarlett and Jo looks especially good and I'm hoping Katya wildman may do a couple of summer numbers. I'll look at that stylist too.

And the poster that said why not lose weight - what part of not happening did you not get? Tell you what, you go 'easily' lose 4 stone and then make your fortune telling the world how! Confused

I recommend Scarlett & Jo. I am Size 24 & wore bright pink dress to Niece's wedding last year & received lots of compliments. I did get it taken up professionally as found it to be a bit too long but certainly worth it.

@NigelHarmansNewWife indeed they do, together with Next and some other mail order companies. However I found that the British companies only stocked a very limited amount of styles hence my obtaining one via Amazon.

@dumpydumpydumpdump perhaps something like this https://www.johnlewis.com/adrianna-papell-beaded-mesh-midi-dress-light-navy/p112209060

It's seamed under the bust and might be a bit low waisted in the shaping but a good seamstress would be able to lift it on the seam. Model is also 5' 9" so would be longer on you.

Luckypoppy · 05/01/2025 12:19

Scarlett and Jo! Honestly the most flattering dresses ever! There's second hand groups on facebooks with lots of pics.

Ever pretty run small in plus sizes so you'd need a few sizes bigger.

😂The photographing is very much so. However, having seen some of them on some real women they were actually very flattering, and the women in them looked very comfortable.

My worry with places like Phase 8, John Lewis, Hobbs etc, is that you run the risk of a guest having purchased there too.

Also by seeing stockists of dresses like those in the link, you can find shops more specialized in dressing mother of the groom.

Please don't.

Scirocco · 05/01/2025 12:32

Good underwear can be a solid starting point, so maybe get a bra fitting both in advance of your search and again closer to the date in case of any changes. You could also consider some gentle shapewear/smoothing underwear - not in a 'compress everything to within an inch of its life' way, but to give dresses a smoother base and avoid underwear lines.

Do you have any specialist shops near you that do wedding/occasion wear? You could make an appointment and get some advice and inspiration. I'd probably avoid patterns in the main outfit but go for a flattering single colour and something that both flatters your impressive cleavage and allows your personality to shine (so, something that you feel comfortable in).

dumpydumpydumpdump · 05/01/2025 12:34

I have been thinking about my style.

I think I am Demelza meets Tirzah Garwood life meets 70s Laura Ashley via a good Boden pattern.

So now I'm thinking a decent coloured dress with a whimsical feather fascinator and great bag and (flat) shoes

@namechangeGOT soladarity sister! Thanks for posting, take care of your precious self.

I don't think you know what CBT is or for.

CBT helps you understand and reframe the way you think and the language you use to express your thoughts. So, for example, CBT might encourage someone whose life is spent judging and criticising and telling other people what to do to explore what they reveal about themselves when they behave like this. For example, have they learned to do this as a result of hypercritical parents? Do they lack the imagination or empathy to understand what people might feel when judged? If so it might be necessary to explore whether they are ND. Are they controllers elsewhere in their lives, in which case did they learn to abuse people? Or do they just enjoy humiliating and judging others in a way that might indicate a personality disorder?

catatonique · 05/01/2025 12:50

they are all polyester sacks

Would any of you wear those? REALLY?

Or maybe you could have some and realise that.OP clearly has a much bigger issue with her weight than she's pretending (it couldn't be more obvious from her posts) and advising losing weight in order to have a better range of clothes to choose from (as well as ever other benefit) is a perfectly normal response on a message board of this type.
It's a more honest form of communication than RL.
