Fuck what I can I wear to this wedding?

dumpydumpydumpdump · 04/01/2025 19:17

Son getting married this summer. Her mum is 6ft and slender. She's going to look incredible as MOB

I am short, fat (22-24) and with massive boobs. Like huge!

Feeling a bit panic stricken now.
Don't even know what I want to wear let alone find it.

I like patterns but don't want to look like upholstered armchair.
Like most colours, complexion is fair, mousy hair.

No overt cleavage on show. Calves also fecking hug3 so not too short.

Maybe hat. But I look silly in anything small because of massive boobs and tummy.

Arse also size of a small country.

I am perfectly happy with my size mostly, certainly no motivation to starve. But wtf am I going to wear? I'm going to let him down by looking fucking awful. I jus5 want something chic and comfortable.

Budget - not bothered. I was going to look at bombshell but they gone bust. All the MOB/MOG stuff seems to be for thin elegant Carole Middleton types. Love Carole btw. But I need something for a Miriam Margoles shape.

I'm going for this approach op. Could you get a personal trainer for 2 months and then start shopping?

Could you and the PPs start a course of CBT and then by the summer you might not all be so judgemental fat shamers and may even have dropped a few prejudices and have developed a healthier mindset? I say this from concern and from a place of love.

catatonique · 05/01/2025 10:12

I sympathise with the tits thing. You can be bloody size 12 as I was before my breast reduction and the whole tits thing affects every single thing you wear.

I would agree with everybody else do one colour and find a colour that when you wear it people say oh my God, you look amazing. Get an idea of what bits about you that you do like and want to flatter for example you want a loose bit over your boobs, what length sleeve do you want? What kind of neck line do you want?

go and see a dressmaker and get her to give you ideas of shapes that she can make and that would look good. How long do you want it, is a key point.

catatonique · 05/01/2025 10:13

Also remember, despite the thousands of photos you will have in a lineup with lots of other people, nobody actually ever has that photo on their shelf

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/01/2025 10:18

Hats for short people are often tricky, they are designed for looking forward in - because average height women will look forward in hats, but if like you (and me) you are shorter than everyone else around you, you’ll have to look up to see. Also anything with a massive brim (mushroom like!) will mean the other guests can’t see your face if they are looking downwards to you. You’ll be all hat.

StScholastica · 05/01/2025 10:26

My DD is 27 and very stylish, she says that she can't understand why otherwise really fashionable women morph into Hyacinth Bucket when it comes to weddings and go for really dated structured styles that are very "samey" and cost a fortune. I'd avoid any boutiques that are specifically targeting MOB.
What do you usually like to wear? What colours look fab on you?

Collette78 · 04/01/2025 19:29

That’s a really nice dress on that link, beautiful colour too.

I bought a dress that colour and then regretted it because it made me look like Fiona from Shrek.

I don't think you know what CBT is or for.

Wow, your responses to well-intentioned commenters are really rude. If you just want to scoff at suggestions, why post in the first place?

For the love of god don't do emerald green or any other bright or jewel tone. Aim for something unobtrusive like mauve or dusty rose.

It is what it is. Aim for restraint and dignity.

Why can't she wear bright colours @BettyBardMacDonald

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 05/01/2025 10:59

@dumpydumpydumpdump i am a similar size to you so I appreciate your feelings about the high street.

First things to ask before suggesting anything would be what is the colour scheme for the wedding? What colour are the bridesmaids wearing, ties etc?

What is your budget?

Next do some ovely plus size bits and if you have an account you have the bonus of being able to order and try on at home.

Quiz do a plus range. Yours do but they are awful. Studio 8 are great, coast do some bits.

But you are probably best talking to your local bridal wear shops for mother of the bride/groom shop recommendations.

Don't forget that if you find something you love but is too long/sleeves aren't quite right etc you can take to a good seamstress who can alter

Sunsetsandcocktails · 05/01/2025 11:01

@dumpydumpydumpdump i haven’t read the full thread so not sure if it’s been mentioned but Laura Adlington always looks really nice and she’s done various series on Instagram including occasion wear I think so maybe see if you like any of her suggestions. Def not MOB-ey (she’s the one who was on bake off a few years ago)

A trouser suit can be properly tailored so it accommodates height and boobs (I am short with boobs).
How about this dress: https://www.johnlewis.com/phase-eight-collection-8-charissa-silk-maxi-dress-blue-gold/p111667039
Available in your size and could be taken up if too long.
Or maybe this

That first phase eight dress is gorgeous

John Lewis don't do personal shoppers in-store for size 22.

Or at least they didn't when I tried to book a few years back. They only did online appointments, and the whole experience was pretty rubbish IMO. The personal shopper showed me loads of frumpy clothes, nothing stylish except a nice top that was 2 sizes too small but she suggested it might come up big and work.

I couldn't work out if she was pigeonholing me as frumpy due to being 2 decades younger than me, or if that's all they had in my size.

Agree with this re John Lewis Personal Shopping. I went when I was a size 16/18 and whilst I had a great experience, there was in reality a really small selection of clothes to choose from. I can only imagine that for larger sizes it would be even worse.

I’m a similar height and shape to you, with the same anxieties prior to our eldest son’s wedding about being compared to the bride’s super-slim, fit and ultra glamorous mother. Fortunately, I stumbled across Ann Balon MotB outfits. She designs for a wide range of shapes, and many of her outfits are designed and made especially for curvier women. She uses natural fibres (cotton, viscose and silk - so really comfortable and breathable) to make beautiful, elegant, lacy outfits that drape beautifully. There is a gorgeous range of colours too - from subtle pastels, dove grey etc through to vibrant fuchsia, beautiful claret and deepest blues.

I know I’m waxing lyrical here but I’m honestly not connected to her sales in any way… I just remember the relief I felt when I finally found something to wear that I felt really confident in. Prior to finding this, I was absolutely dreading being looked at or photographed but on the day I felt so good, I danced the night away and was happy to be photographed. I even liked the photos afterwards - a first for me!

The final proof of the pudding was when our younger son got married a couple of years later, I headed straight to google to search my nearest stockist of Ann Balon! Both outfits cost a fortune (£750+) but I honestly felt a million dollars so it was worth every penny to enjoy the special day. If you don’t mind buying preloved clothes, EBay often have Ann Balon outfits on sale.I originally intended to sell my outfits to recoup some of the costs after the weddings but I love them so much I couldn’t bring myself to do it!

Best of luck and I hope you and all your friends and family have a fabulous day!

Those are really old-fashioned, like 1980s style matchy matchy Jacques Vert outfits. I wouldn't do for that given the brief you gave OP.

Really? OP sounds like a very happy person to me.

Look at phase 8. They do petite plus size. The dresses are lined. The cover up lumps and bumps. I found them very flattering.

Love this:

You could have it shortened to just above ankle length. And have some gold highlights in your mousey hair. Some might say it's too bridal, I suppose.

I have a full-bodied friend who always does super-smart for these occasions and looks fabulous. She's approve of the collar and sleeves: people will be mesmerised by your discreet, tasteful voluptuousness.

You say that you are perfectly happy with your size, but you really don’t sound it?

My mum is plus-sized. She's quite happy with it and dresses well. But she always mentions her weight before someone else does which could be misconstrued as her being unhappy with it.

Why?

Because stupid women like the ones commenting on this thread, who like to dress up their own conditioned mentality of weight as being 'concern', will always try and get in their first. Not with direct comments or questions because they aren't brave or clever enough to do so, but with apparently 'well meaning' posts like 'oooh you've got months OP, a little weight loss will make you feel so much better at the wedding'.

Not every woman is thick enough to think that they could only possibly look and feel good at 9 stone, not every woman is boring enough to pour through fashion magazines full of generic models who look half baked, not every woman has been conditioned to believe that only a certain size should be accepted and believe it or not, even fatter women have functioning eyeballs and mirrors and are able to detect that they are bigger than other women, they are fully aware of what possible health implications there could be, and guess what? They still need a fucking dress for their sons wedding and would like fashion advice without insipid little women making catty comments.

I'm a size 8 and have a world of fashion available to me - I achieve it with a mixture of starvation, Orlistat that I buy off the internet, the occasional Saxenda purchase that the internet claims to make it impossible to buy but I can guarantee you it's not and a world of guilt over eating. So, if you all want to come at someone for being 'unhealthy', then come at me and just give the OP some fashion suggestions. LIKE SHE ASKED FOR.

Bailiwitch · 05/01/2025 11:48

Some might say it's too bridal, I suppose.

Well, yes. Because it is!

If I were the bride I’d be thoroughly pissed off if my MIL turned up in that. Perfectly fine dress otherwise.

ohbygolly · 05/01/2025 11:56

I'd suggest taking a look at Veromia Occasions. If you go their website you can find stockists near where you are. Their dresses are so flattering, and they do a mix of solid colours and patterns, along with dipped hems, sleeves and helpful draping.
