A new thread to share 'shopping from our wardrobes' so we realise we already have nice things to wear and don't need to buy anything else.

Since I got back I've been living in Icebreaker merino, actually love my merino shirt in this transitional weather and the merino joggers are really comfy. Just been WFH this week and not really going anywhere.

Returned some stuff from my previous accidental splurge, just waiting for the refund now which seems to be taking forever for some reason. Did buy a couple items from the charity shop the other week but one was a replacement (my usual day bag broke). So not too bad. Plus, I've fully switched my wardrobe over from winter (small wardrobe so I store stuff seasonally) and found some things for my next clothes swap. I like the idea of making 3 outfits out of something I hardly wear, will have a rummage.

anon2022anon · 27/04/2025 06:49

How's the outfits going this week everyone, anything you want to show us?
@Netcam glad you had a lovely trip! The colours on the checked shirt outfit are lovely, very soft and muted.

@Cantonet I think the jackets lovely! I also think that you shouldn't let yourself be talked into returning or keeping it- your son might think it's a bit extra, but what do you think? When you put it on, do you feel like you? Do you feel like it's something you'll put on, even twice a year, and feel fab when you go to the pub? And is that a leather rope belt I see? I like that very much!

@tonybennscat sorry to hear about your friend.
Your outfit for the lunch out sounds fab, and I'm glad you've given the trousers an outfit! I had some silver trainers 2 years ago and I wore them to the ground in a year, I replaced them with white but they were a very handy neutral. That's made me ponder 🤔

@dayslikethese1 you should do it! It's a handy exercise, even if it's just to pinpoint why you aren't reaching for the item.

anon2022anon · 27/04/2025 06:54

Okay so after my 3 outfits- I've sold the red trousers. Did I like a couple of outfits? Yes. But I can still see that they would be something that in my wardrobe, I would have to actively say I'm going to choose the red trousers today, band I don't want that. I want something I'm excited to wear.
Not in the spirit of the thread, but I've replaced them with a pair of red linen style wide leg trousers from Next. I haven't worn yet, I can and may return, but I feel like I couldn't make the others work casually and feel like me, and that would be more wearable in my wardrobe. So I'll try them on a few ways this week, and see how I go. The others need posting out tomorrow.

anon2022anon · 27/04/2025 07:01

@Cantonet I honestly didn't realise I was high contrast type of dresser until about 9 months ago, I saw a reel on that Vs tonal dressing, and it clicked to me why I'd been feeling very out of fashion for the couple of years previously. I'd been following lots of people on SM who looked great, were similar shape to me, but were tonal dressers, and whenever I tried things on in a similar vein I felt like I had imposter syndrome- too grown up, too cohesive, too smart even in leisure wear. It was a bit of a revelation! From there I started following people who often do dopamine dressing or similar, and Im a lot happier in my wardrobe since. But where I do find I'm lacking is finding people of my build- I follow midsize creators, but often the goal is tummy- happy dressing, and I couldn't care less about my stomach. I need pear shape and long torso advice! Must go hunting.

Which one is style personality, have you got a link to that? I've probably looked at some point! And did you return the pretty blue skirt you bought? That was a lovely skirt.

Cantonet · 27/04/2025 07:30

I think you're doing the right thing @anon2022anon. Your trousers really did sell quickly. E Bay often takes forever.
I do think you suit red, so see how you feel in the linen pair.
Ds is pretty stylish ( have rather well dressed cool boy/girls twins ) & one who looks like he's been pulled thru' a hedge backwoods. So I do listen to those two. I did love the jacket, but I need very little occasion wear. I live in a hiking beauty spot and it's very casual here. I substituted it with another camel Suedette jacket ( pictured) which I'm very happy with in a colour I often wear. Plus it goes with all the skirts I wanted it to.I also found a lightweight jersey jacket in the same colour reduced in Uniqlo which is perfect wear too for summer.

I do love my rope belt . My mum also bought me the cream version of the leather rope belt as a thank you for taking her shopping & styling her up for summer.
I have several neutral coloured linen dresses that the belt will be perfect for.

@Netcam
I love the sound of your cosy inviting nest/bed in your caravan !

@anon2022anonyes you're right fashion has been very tonal & neutral for a long time. I've been lucky as these colours really suit me as a Classic Natural style personality. I'm not sure where to look for Dopamine style dressing.Theres a lot of rabbit holes you can follow if you Google Style Personalities. A lot of the Dopamine dressing Instagramers are larger than life personalities too. Do you follow Melissa Murrell? I've learnt so much from her & she often wears colour. Plus her body shape masterclasses on you tube are really informative.

WillaDeWord · 27/04/2025 08:50

Hello all, have been following and enjoying this thread (especially @anon2022anon's 3 outfits idea. I would definitely join this if you are still doing it?) but after a strange month with three funerals am only now venturing back on to post.

My clothing expenditure is also positively correlated with my stress levels (!) and am really enjoying the M&S suedette stuff, so unfortunately I have been adding to my wardrobe and you can see from outfits here that I have been enjoying the suedette trench already.

Otherwise, some three-piece suits have been getting a bit of wear (I borrowed DH's tie to wear with the orange one). I always feel very like myself in a trouser suit.

@anon2022anon these are my second pair of silver trainers. I love them.

Interested to hear about high contrast/dopamine vs tonal dressing. Will have to look that up. I’m a cool summer I think for what that is worth and don’t suit many of the neutral colours that are around at the moment. I am also a long bodied pear.

I wore the side stripe trousers a few times this week, with a navy and white Breton and a denim jacket, a white T and a silver grey cardigan and either the gold fake birkies or silver trainers and felt good. So they are staying.

anon2022anon · 27/04/2025 10:27

Im sorry to hear about many funerals @WillaDeWord but my word, some beautiful pieces have got some wear there! I'd love to see what you have in your wardrobe that's not getting used, and how you can make it work for different situations.

Here are a few outfits I've worn this past couple of weeks, including the spotty trousers for a day clubbing event- was surprisingly brilliant! The trousers are a recent purchase from m&s, and are something I will wear for years.

Silver trainers are an absolute staple for me, and my feet are very bolloxed by arthritis. So I buy my favoured ones whenever they're on offer (chase 2 from Hotter, much less grannyish than most of their stuff). Which is why I currently have 4 pairs - one that lives at my mother's, a pair I've just started using, and 2 pairs waiting for the current one to wear out. I bought a lovely silver handbag to go with them...

There's almost nothing in life as pleasing as a shiny new handbag @SqueakyDinosaur.
Those dotty trousers really suit you @anon2022anon.
Nice to hear from you @WillaDeWord. That antique green is one of my favourite colours of all time . Looking very chic as always. I'm fully supportive of the M&S Suedette range ...

tonybennscat · 30/04/2025 10:01

How are you all coping with this heat? I gardened in the morning then came home, showered and changed into a loose black cotton dress (M&S two years ago). Went to a comedy gig in the evening and wore the same dress with some flat yellow sandals (Clark’s, 2019, I love them so much they only come out on special occasions).
Today I’m wearing old cropped jeans, pale pink linen shirt over a pale green cami. The cami is at least 10 years old. Fake gold birkies again.

henlake7 · 30/04/2025 20:06

I'm still waiting to feel warm....am currently contemplating getting my hot water bottle out!

Failing at shopping my wardrobe as have just cheered myself up from horrible work shifts by shopping on Vinted (i really need to stop doing this🙁).
So I bought a Run & Fly yellow bee print corduroy pinafore dress and a pair of brand new mustard yellow suede loafers.....maybe I was hoping all the yellow would perk me up abit!

Netcam · 30/04/2025 22:22

Today's outfit, but I did go to the office where the air con was on so cooler than WFH.

@Netcam that looks lovely, and it's amazing to see the difference between the idea picture and the RL picture - the colours look a lot more muted on the idea, and it looks altogether more casual. Whereas you look smarter and brighter in RL. Interesting.

Thank you for the trousers love! I ❤️ a polka dot, IF you can find the right one- big, solid and evenly placed. Anything wobbly or unevenly placed makes me itch 😂

Thanks, yes, I often find an outfit looks completely different when I try it on. I wasn't intending to be smart, my office is super casual. The shirt is actually very thin silk which is great in hot weather to keep my arms warm in the air con there without getting too hot. And I chose the red t-shirt to go with my red Wolky sandals, which I love wearing as they are both fun and comfy.

I agree with @anon2022anon.
Looks so much better in real life. Such clever colours to put together @Netcam.
I spent yesterday's sunny day washing, drying & ironing my linen shirts. I was mortified to find I have 13 blue shirts😳Ok bought over the years but still....
I think I shove them at the back of the cupboard as they're not ironed & forget about them & buy a new one instead, rather like socks.. So my summer resolution is to iron every week.
I found some old denim pinstripe jeans that are in again.I'm planning on wearing with some cream silk shell tops/blouses that are years old & my new cream leather rope belt. Of course that means yet more ironing 😉. I definitely got out of the habit when the school shirts stopped!

Cantonet · 01/05/2025 07:38

@henlake7the yellow sounds amazing. Especially the bumble bees.
Likewise the Clarks yellow sandals @tonybennscat.
Very on-trend. If I hear the phrase butter yellow as being the colour of the season any more I'm going to scream. I don't like the way it sounds for some reason.

Edited

I'm a bit out of touch, had no idea yellow was going to be good to wear this summer. But I've been looking forward to wearing this linen dress I bought last Autumn in the sales which I was pleased to find heavily reduced in the sale in my size in petite.

Oh I love that dress. Yellow brings me so much joy, it’s definitely my favourite colour. I’ve yet to find a shade of yellow I can wear next to my face though they say there is one for everyone.

Well done for ironing! I'm not an ironer and I'm probably never going to be. Like you I love linen in summer too but find linen shirts too much trouble as they often need ironing. I found some in the Poetry end of last summer sales that are a textured linen that (apparently) doesn't need ironing, so that's what I'll be wearing to cover up from the sun this summer, not actually worn them yet.

Stunning dress @Netcam.
I have a pale yellow blouse & skirt that really suit my colouring. But for some reason I never wear it. My default is white/cream tops.
I also have several cotton gauze blouses & some crinkle linen mix ones from Wrap. I dread to think how many blouses/shirts I actually have. I do wear the ones I don't have to iron all the time.
Attached is an outfit I'm happy to wear today. Uniqlo jacket that was reduced & an M&S skirt. It's the first time I've worn it as I needed a shorter jacket to wear with it.
