A new thread to share 'shopping from our wardrobes' so we realise we already have nice things to wear and don't need to buy anything else.

@WillaDeWord that sounds an amazing coat!

Cantonet · 25/01/2025 11:43

@WillaDeWord your edwardian coat sounds like something Laura Ashley would have done well back in the day.
Beautiful coat @anon2022anon.

Reminded of my brown Sherpa jacket by your post @anon2022anon I'm wearing it with last years brown cashmere jumper that I haven't yet worn.

Plus I purchased a few t shirts from the Muji sale. Pure cotton scoop neck, reduced ( £7 ish) & normally so difficult to source. To replace my old J Crew vintage cotton that are now falling apart.
I have the Uniqlo cotton heat tech, but really don't like the feel of lycra on my skin at all.

@Princessfluffy thanks for posting that video about the three word method. I watched it- think I have two distinct looks. I've tried to pin down my three words for each.
Workwear is: Oversized, tailored, elegance
Casual is: relaxed, vibrant, playful

Whether I can live up to those is a different matter!

Here's the outfit I wore accompanying the class 3 school trip this week...

@SwishMyCape interesting idea to have two sets of words and it makes sense to me.

I don't need work clothes so I've just got one set of words and they are not dissimilar to yours: colourful, 70s silhouettes, playful

I love the spring-like colours in your outfit, spring colours are my best colours for sure. I think I'm a "bright spring" in colour analysis theory.

Princessfluffy · 25/01/2025 21:12

I find the 3 words helpful if I'm considering buying something new or deciding whether to keep something old. I ask myself if it fits my words and if not I reconsider buying/keeping it.

Just catching up with all your great outfits. Had a lovely day with friends celebrating my birthday in my chosen outfit, thanks for the help deciding everyone.

Work day outfit on Thursday (toilet selfie), wearing the gold boots again, and work from home day yesterday- topped off with my glorious velvet coat for the school run 😍 I love it, but I look like I'm wearing a duvet when it's fastened!

What fabulous gold boots

@Netcam that sounds great, I'm still trying to get to that place of having only things I love in my wardrobe. It's a fun process.

I'm finding uploading things to Whering/Indyx useful as I'm asking myself is it worth the effort to upload something that I'm not excited to wear or to look at in my digital wardrobe.

Definitely. The only thing is I haven't left much in case I need some really old clothes for messy gardening/decorating.

But definitely useful having a digital wardrobe to explore.

OP posts:
Netcam · 25/01/2025 22:48

@Cantonet, I don't use the archive function on Whering.

I would find it too time consuming going through everything each season to archive and unarchive.

I do store sets of items in categories in Lookbooks though. For example I have a t-shirts category with all my t- shirts in, a dresses category with all my dresses in etc, so I can quickly see all items in that category.

Then I also have categories for years so I can add anything I bought that year. It gives me a really quick view of everything I bought in a given year.

Then I have categories for different types of outfits for different seasons and situations, eg. Winter casual.

I've been exploring that Netcam. That might be my next move.
Do you both tagging every item one item at a time or do you just scroll through adding to picture?

NormaMajors1992coat · 26/01/2025 08:48

I have been enjoying this thread as a lurker spectator, love seeing all your outfits, very inspiring! I don't dress up very often as I work from home most of the time and the priority is staying warm and comfy.

But - I've recently lost some weight and simultaneously discovered Vinted, so now having fun with clothes for the first time really (aged 54 🤦‍♀️). Looking forward to dipping my toe in, trying a few things and seeing what suits.

TosstTastic · 26/01/2025 09:16

Try the three words trick recommended up thread. Thank you who ever linked that.
Mine are long, neat and textured. As I went through the reject clothes pile plus what I loved in my wardrobe it worked!

When I first started using the Whering App it wasn't possible to add an item to a day on the calendar like you can now. You could only add an outfit.

So I decided to make each item an individual outfit that I could add to a day. I started doing this as I added items initially. At the same time, I decided to put those single item outfits into product type categories in the Lookbooks so I could easily find them by category.

Often, for example, I wear the same jumper and trousers for multiple days with a different long sleeved top underneath. So I wanted to make the jumper and trousers an outfit I could add each day I wore it and add different long sleeved tops on different days separately to the calendar.

Dressed like a banana today. Smartwool merino leggings and long sleeved top, Croft House lambswool birthday jumper.

I had a go too, well, I did it on the Whering App and haven't rejected anything.

I got Practical, Colourful and Luxurious.

Interesting to hear other people's three words!

Netcam I love those colourful spreads, did you use lookbooks for them?

Practical, colourful, luxurious - bang on there @Netcam

Keen to hear if it works for more of you checking in on the thread.

WillaDeWord · 27/01/2025 20:20

Just spent a very happy tube ride home thinking about my three words - thank you @Princessfluffy for the suggestion. Had only vaguely heard of it before.

I think mine are: Polished, Opulent, Powerful (following the practical / aspirational / desired vibe based approach). Not sure whether "opulent" is the right word, but it was chosen because I love all luxurious fabrics, especially silk and velvet (and silk velvet) and can never get enough. My ideal closet would be filled with silk velvet pieces by Fortuny.

In the real world, today I wore this. Not pictured: some red lipstick and my biggest ever hair (thanks to the intermittent downpours!).

I will have to do that 3 word thing.
At my parents again as they crashed their car into a bollard. So they currently need a chauffeur.
So a practical outfit with a touch of leopard again.

@Cantonet classic blue and leopard, love it!

@WillaDeWord although your styles are not the same, I am always reminded of the Jessica Pearson character in Suits when I look at your outfit boards and I think the same words could apply to her too. Love that you have Powerful as one of your words.

SqueakyDinosaur · 28/01/2025 20:57

I think your three words are perfect, @WillaDeWord ! And yes, good fabrics are so important - I don't really trust things that aren't natural fibres, and spend an inordinate amount of time stalking silk tops on eBay!

I'm the same with fabrics, I hate synthetics. I had a look at my 3 boards for the 3 words and virtually everything, is either wool, silk, cashmere, linen or cotton.

There might be a small amount of elastane or tencel in a few items, but a large proportion of my clothes are actually merino, including most t-shirts, long sleeved tops, summer dresses, hoddies, leggings, joggers etc.

The only exceptions are the Hoka trainers, which are all synthetic, but incredibly comfortable for my difficult feet. The other shoes are leather.

And the 3 coats in my regular board with synthetic outer layers actually have wool padding and merino lining.

I have had a rule for a number of years that I only buy clothes that are made of natural fabrics.

I am struggling ++ with my 3 words! Just say with my friends daughter who is staying with us for a while and has a great eye (she’s 13!!). She reckons textured, simple, smart or some variation of that. I do like to mix textures - picked up an amazing Lois Vuitton calf skin mini skirt in a charity shop (£7) that feels like butter. It looks great with a mohair jumper.

I’ve carried on with my mass wardrobe clear out and am left with only things I really love and intend to wear. My Vinted balance has never been so healthy.

Has anyone found their style has changed drastically if their weight has changed? For years I have lived in Hush Kensington dressed. They look great with boots or flip flops. I can dress them up or down. So versatile. All of a sudden after a 3-4 stone weight loss they don’t look so great on me. Even though I have sized down. I’m a bit baffled. I think they possibly suit a curvier figure than I have now?

Firstly well done for the weight loss. You must have needed some new clothes!

I lost a stone and a half and had to replace a lot of trousers, although other clothes were OK.

I used to wear leggings a lot and after weight loss felt they made my legs look too skinny. I'd never previously considered I would ever think my legs look too skinny!

If we wore clothes previously that perhaps flatter a curvier figure, we might now want outfits that embrace a slimmer figure.
