Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

Sports Direct has a good selection of orange men's coats. My daughter got a great one there recently (now discontinued, but there are plenty of others to choose from).

OptimisticRealist2024 · 06/12/2024 16:34

I'm in my early 30s and there was a point in my life where everyone I went to school with had the same black Superdry coat. Reading this thread makes me feel ancient 💀

FWIW most kids round my way wear North Face jackets.

SadieGreen · 06/12/2024 16:48

My 18 year old son has a few items from Superdry but nothing with the massive logo on. I don’t know any 40+ men who’d shop in there. I thought it was for the youngsters! I’d think it was sad if my husband shopped in there tbh!

See Google for pics innit bruh

Even my DH who is 56 thinks Superdry is for older geeks. Try hard without even trying. My 22-year old has thought the same for at least 5 years. It’s just something about the brand that is very off.

Catswhisky · 06/12/2024 17:02

DS is 19 and still misses his superdry coat he outgrew at 16. He hasn’t found any others as warm and “with the right pockets”. I don’t think anybody cares what brand coat they have at his old school. I love that orange one, the sort of thing DS would have chosen

My 19yr old wears Superdry. He’s been told on several occasions he should be a model so I don’t think it’s done him any harm.

What’s that got to do with wearing the brand Superdry..? You could wear a plastic bag and still be headhunted.

originalvanillaicecream · 06/12/2024 17:07

bigkidatheart · 06/12/2024 08:18

mine wear northface, berghaus, canada goose (very good copies because i'm not paying that)

So they are not wearing NF, Berghaus or CG then.

onwardsup4 · 06/12/2024 17:09

Maybe not the coolest brand but not sure it would alienate him ? Very sad if so. Have you shown him it ?

originalvanillaicecream · 06/12/2024 17:11

He really should wear what he likes though no matter brand. Everyone should.

But not fakes.

I used to get stuff from Cult Clothing (the original shop) as a gothy teenager in Cheltenham in the mid-80s. I think there might even have been a market stall first.

I was a Gloucestershire sixth former in 1989-1991, and we all wore a kind of grandad shirt style sweatshirt from Cult Clothing. Mine was maroon, and I loved it.

CarpetTroubles · 06/12/2024 17:53

Gravitasdepleted · 05/12/2024 20:51

I think so long as the coat itself is quite cool it probably wont matter what the brand is. Orange can go either way, he doesnt want to look like a traffic cone. What about ebay, this one looks teen friendly to me: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126777771488?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338590836&toolid=10044&customid=976c2341ec131f033a604413fdaa643c

I think you’ve forgotten what it’s like to be a teenager! The brand is the most inportant thing.

80smonster · 06/12/2024 17:55

Orange? Superdry? That’s one way to ensure no female interest, are you doing this on purpose? 😂

80smonster · 06/12/2024 17:58

Tess150 · 05/12/2024 20:30

Yes Superdry is for middle aged men trying to be young and trendy - I rib my OH about it. North Face has been popular here in recent years with teens.

Hardcore agree. A deeply uncool brand… even for 50 year olds.

How do you know he prefers female interest..?

Orange Parka

Saw an orange coat on Weekend Offender; might give him some unexpected street cred.

Probably not. Because some people has said he could be a model. He is not, but he could be you know.

The Japanese letters on some garments ( kanji ) make no sense on this UK based brand and I only know of one or 2 , 50 somethings who wear it .
Teens round here wear a mix of brands but many seem to have Uniqlo

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/12/2024 19:42

For everyone questioning orange, this is his longstanding favourite colour, and he's had a few orange coats. It suits him, he likes it. He's probably best described as "quirky". This possibly applies to the whole family... we're all extremely unlikely to ever own as nice camel coat as someone suggested. Our lifestyle is just not that formal or urban.

Here he is 10 years ago, in an outfit he chose himself. He does prefer shades of sludge with bits of blue for most of his clothes these days though. 😄

Anyway, thank you all for your help, advice and opinions is ds' sexuality. He's happy with his choice of coat.

I'm convinced no adult can determine cool in the same way teenagers do. It even varies depending on location.

When I live, Superdry is typically 40s dad still making some effort. Northface is the uniform of little scrots who have been or should be sent to juvenile court.

Surprises with teenage clothes rarely works unless chosen by another teenage or him or his friends.

I was going to ask what a "roadman" is, having already inferred from context that it's not a highway repair worker, but I suspect that "little scrotes who have been or should be sent to juvenile court" is the actual definition.

No we don't know because it's an anonymous Internet forum so why would any us know your potential "model" son? @HazelTiger is right, its totally irrelevant

@bigkidatheart you can think and buy whatever you like at whatever price point. Counterfeits are wrong as are copies dupes or whatever you like to call them .

And counterfeit goods fund other crime activities.
