Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

Barbour, DuBarry and RAB seem to be the favourites for dog walkers.

I don't tend to notice tbh, I think I only note North Face because it's such a visible logo. I like jackets that are hardy and warm, but lightweight, for walking - North Face fits the bill.

YRGAM · 06/12/2024 10:02

Uniqlo probably fits the balance between quality of product and style. Although if you want waterproofness then Didriksons are great and a lot cheaper than Canada Goose etc

I’m glad you edited that 😅 Otherwise that sounds uncomfortable and also perhaps oversharing? 🤔

Omg I literally pressed “post“ and saw it! 🤣saw my life flash before my eyes - autocorrect doing me dirty this morning

itwasonlyhalloween10minutesago · 06/12/2024 10:35

My son wears it, seems quite happy with it. Def not a country mouse - lives in North London.

Refuses North Face now! Something to do with Roadmen.

Clafoutie · 06/12/2024 10:37

This thread has been an education for me!

Notsandwiches · 06/12/2024 10:41

Both my teen girls (14 and 16) happily wear Superdry (their hoodies are fab) but they don't care what others think of their sartorial choices.

BunnyLake · 06/12/2024 10:50

My 19yr old wears Superdry. He’s been told on several occasions he should be a model so I don’t think it’s done him any harm.

pooballs · 06/12/2024 11:01

allthatfalafel · 05/12/2024 22:13

So weird, I'm of the generation where the only people wearing North Face were beardy middle aged middle class hikers.

Yes it’s funny isn’t it my dad had a north face coat well over 15 years ago and it was absolutely not trendy at all 🤣

Same with crocs! Couldn’t believe it when my very fashion-conscious teen nieces rocked up in white crocs. Then I started seeing them everywhere in the summer. They used to be THE object of fashion ridicule.

TabbyBeast · 06/12/2024 11:14

I used to joke to my teen that Superdry is for undercover cops! Then while watching 24 Hours in Police Custody loads of the cops were wearing Superdry t-shirts 😂

HarrietBond · 06/12/2024 11:21

I feel appallingly out of it reading this. My teenager's black puffa coat is M&S from a charity shop, and most of the kids at her school appear to be in Primark from what she says. She's happy in Primark but also likes Urban Outfitters. I had thought Superdry was cool, vaguely, but never shopped there because of the cost. We are not in a roadmen area (not real ones - I'm sure there are some wannabes) so not sure what the things NOT to wear would be.

Worldgonecrazy · 06/12/2024 11:25

DD (15) loves her Superdry parka. However she goes to a non uniform school where the kids pay more attention to overall style rather than individual brands.

Henrythehappypig · 06/12/2024 11:28

My friend bought a Suoerdry jacket the other day and to her surprise her 17 year old private school going DS said he wanted to same one. She tried to head him off with similar styles from other brands but he was adamant so she’s just going to make sure they don’t match if they ever head out together.

I think Superdry has moved on from generalised uncoolness. It suffered from being too good quality I think and having such a broad range of clothes that people who liked it as teenagers 20
odd years ago could still find stuff they liked at a different life stage and their old gear from their youth was still going strong. My elder DD will wear the odd thing (and will take her younger sister’s old NF puffer jacket when DD2 gets a new one). DD2 only likes NF, Nike, Gymshark, White Fox 🙄 though she asked for a (Vinted) Stüssy hoodie for Christmas.

North Face has somehow managed to straddle being a teen brand while retaining a reputation for good quality outdoor gear, probably by keeping the teen-style putters out of the NF ranges sold in specialist outdoor shops.

I was a total nerd in high school in Yorkshire and conversely when my parents tried to give me something that was obviously cool and on-trend, I found it actually gave me more attention. Like the kids picked on me for trying to fit in and trying to be cool 😥. It made me feel horrible. So there’s two ways to look at everything. The Uniqlo suggestions sound good. It’s kind of a normcore brand
.

😔 same thing happens to my daughter's lovely but very shy and quiet friend. She has all the 'right' branded clothes but gets called a 'wannabe' and a 'try hard' and told she's copying this or that popular kid.

I'm not convinced branded clothes are the armour against bullying people think they are.

OTannenbaumOTannenbaum · 06/12/2024 11:34

This thread has made me feel old😁 15 years ago I was 21 and Superdry was all the rage. I still wear their joggers at home, and hoodies out and about 🙈 didn't realise it was middle aged folk trying to be cool. It's just stuff I wore when I was 21 that I still find comfy

bigkidatheart · 06/12/2024 11:41

LigamentBandy · 06/12/2024 08:58

https://www.canadagoose.com/uk/en/counterfeit/counterfeit.htmlCounterfeit is the word you are looking for 'copies' is incorrect.
Counterfeit goods are awful, might save you some money but really you should educate yourself & not proudly promote your "copies"

Edited

I am educated thanks,

counterfeit - made in exact imitation of something valuable = copy

I apologise for not being able to afford the real thing and it's the only time I have ever bought one, but it was for a 13yr old who would probably would not look after it anyway, although he has been wearing it for 2 years and it still looks new.

I was replying to OPs post, didn't come on here to be shamed because I can't afford the real deal of something.

HarrietBond · 06/12/2024 11:43

White Fox is where I have drawn the line. They are stupidly expensive for a basic plain hoodie with some crude lettering.

Henrythehappypig · 06/12/2024 11:48

I wouldn’t touch White Fox outside their offer periods where there is 40% off. Brings a hoodie down to around £30 which is the upper ceiling of what am willing to pay for a hoodie anywhere. The problem then is being relentlessly bombarded with terrible emails from them liberally using the word “babe” and seemingly impossible to unsubscribe to. They get blocked for 364 days of the year.

LigamentBandy · 06/12/2024 12:10

@bigkidatheart you can think and buy whatever you like at whatever price point. Counterfeits are wrong as are copies dupes or whatever you like to call them .

LoveSandbanks · 05/12/2024 22:06

Wait! So a roadman isn’t out tarmacing the roads???

😂😂😂😂😂 you definitely don't live in London.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/12/2024 20:54

You know what... I'm going to ask him.

I was literally going to say why wouldn't you just ask him to choose his own coat. Can't imagine choosing my teens clothes for them. Even buying an item they already own in a different colour is risky!

Notjustabrunette · 06/12/2024 13:24

I used to work for surperdry, they have definitely lost their way these days in terms of knowing who their customers is. That aside, I have gone down a rabbit hole on googling what a road man is.
No advice on a coat for a teen though.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/12/2024 20:30

He'd love a North Face jacket, a big puffy down one, but we live in rural West Yorks, and I'm not paying that much for a coat that's not even waterproof.

Ad it happens I used to do a lot of mountain sports, and had an "original" north face down jacket in the early 90s. It's a bit grotty now though!

Black waterproof North Face coat with matching fleece that can clip in to provide extra warmth. Xx

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/12/2024 20:44

Thiis is so area dependent. My kids have superdry coats and shock horror they actually wear them unlike anything else they have had before.

Only Roadmen wear North Face.

No, it really isn’t. 😂

borntobequiet · 06/12/2024 06:11

Superdry started in Cheltenham. It was initially cool, but like all cool brands it suffered from the original target audience growing up and becoming uncool.
That said, it seems to be worn by quite a few of the university students I teach.

I used to get stuff from Cult Clothing (the original shop) as a gothy teenager in Cheltenham in the mid-80s. I think there might even have been a market stall first.
