Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

Orange Parka

@Fargo79 that's an interesting styling choice to invite customers in with! Not sure I've ever noticed a superdry shop anywhere! But do see (40yr+) men wearing it

EndlessTreadmill · 05/12/2024 21:17

Don't know what Road Men are, but North Face is definitely the brand to have in South West London!

Alternatively, I would imagine Nike would be seen as acceptable (but def not on par with North Face)

Thiis is so area dependent. My kids have superdry coats and shock horror they actually wear them unlike anything else they have had before.

Only Roadmen wear North Face.

This - we moved area and in the first one Superdry would have been a massive slagging. It was so extremely focused on wealth that even Nike and Adidas got pelters, it had to be NF, Canada Goose (!) Patagonia or nothing.

Recently bought the super fashionable 16 y.o a Superdry peacoat and he loves it. North Face has gone off the boil and is mainly sported by neds. Superdry is fine, I know dads wear it but that memo hasn’t reached his school apparently. Other teens in the family also wear it, admittedly they’re super-rural.

Columbia is a safe bet? Or just look at whatever is on offer at JD? Or buy something super-expensive second hand.

Their short little summer tops, whether outright cropped or technically not yet not full length, are for 40-60 year old men?

i think she means the brand generally.

I remember in the early 2000s it was quite cool and I used to believe it was Japanese.

I'm not sure that "little summer tops" is what the op said she was looking for.... For her 16 son
Ops first words are
DS needs a new coat.

CautiousLurker1 · 05/12/2024 21:37

My teens are fine with SuperDry, issue is (mum to 6ft 3.5” boy, XL sizing) that SuperDry come SuperSmall!!

everything I’ve ever bought my DS has been taken by my DH as they don’t fit and DS is too embarrassed to tell me.

ThePoshUns · 05/12/2024 21:38

Gosh I've been wearing Uniqlo puffer coats for years. Glad to know I'm now fashionable.

Just bought my 15yo an ASOS puffer jacket at his request. £119.

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 21:44

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads good on him not following everyone else, looks practical warm & dry

reetaskeeta · 05/12/2024 21:45

One of my girls has a north face and one has super dry. Both of them are plain black with a small chest logo. I don't think either of them were particularly concerned about the branding as long as they were black.

He's chosen this

If he likes it, good for him. The cool kids often peak at high school, he’s not missing much if these kids don’t want to be friends due to a coat,I find kids who don’t care are happier. My oldest looks back and says he’d never try to keep in with the shallow cool kids if he could go back. He did it to an extent to just blend in but is so much happier now just doing his own thing. My youngest has always just done her own thing and has the loveliest group of friends.

ConstanceM · 05/12/2024 21:48

I'm not sure who invented the notion that only Men 40+ wear Superdry and teens can't, it's ridiculous. DS wears Superdry hoodies, and a Superdry Varsity jacket which I doubt any 40+ male would try to style out. Ultimately teens can wear what they want as long as helicopter mums are NOT still buying clothes for them. The orange parka is garish and daring, as a lecturer, I find teens (16-19) couldn't give a monkeys what others wear.

In that case he's had a lucky escape from a brand orientated superficial ingrate.

Pinkruler · 05/12/2024 21:53

Dd is 21 and has recently bought a superdry coat and jacket.

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 21:53

@DogSmiles agreed massive 🤢🤢🤢 ops sixteen year old child.
Not amusing

pooballs · 05/12/2024 21:58

North face coats seem to be the standard teen uniform round here regardless of background. Always black. It’s so boring, going past a school at finishing time there’s just a sea of black north face. I know there have been trends and fashionable brands but I don’t remember everyone being this identical 20 years ago when I was at school. Also notice this with trainer styles- everyone wearing the same exact brand style and colour.

Bestfootforward11 · 05/12/2024 22:04

I thought Superdry was a young persons brand! I’m clearly not at all with it! 😂

Mirabai · 05/12/2024 22:04

I think orange is much more the kiss of death than the brand. He’s going to look like lifeboat crew.

ChristmasCarnage · 05/12/2024 22:04

What on earth is a roadman? We are on the South Coast where the trend seems to be not to wear a coat at all amongst teens.

LoveSandbanks · 05/12/2024 22:06

catlesslady · 05/12/2024 20:59

I think North Face is a 'love it or hate it' sort of brand. I noticed that tons of the older teens around us wear it and thought I would get 'cool mum' points by suggesting we get one for 16 year old DS. He declined in the strongest terms and said the same thing about it being for 'roadmen' or wannabe roadmen. (obviously I then had to ask what a roadman is- originally something to do with drugs apparently)

Wait! So a roadman isn’t out tarmacing the roads???
