Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

the teens at the very very expensive London day school I work in all wear north face. I don't think they've heard of road men 😂

They’ve never heard of drug dealers or users? That’s impressive.

We live rurally enough we can be battered by bad weather, but just about have a passable bus service so that DS has to go out in the weather to get himself to school, rather than being driven there.

Also - he has some sensory issues, he likes a big coat with a hood to retreat into. It's getting him to take it off in the summer that is the problem.

DD(13) won't wear a coat.

I think the SD jacket in your opening post looks gorgeous — ask him if he likes it.

Have I done a mistake? 👀

LigamentBandy · 07/12/2024 12:30

@Minc No she's sorted it out . Then the thread got slightly off by roadman /chav/scrotes (always nice terms for children) then perms so you may not have seen

Janeyboo198 · 07/12/2024 12:31

Canada Zavetti is the trend here for my teen and friends

jlverity · 07/12/2024 13:09

Lol I’m 39 and I think Superdry is super cool. Absolutely devastated to read this chat 🤣

BunnyLake · 07/12/2024 13:14

Tell that to the world’s most popular and oft voted most handsome in the world Korean singer/dancer Kim Taehyung. He wears orange. Jackets, suits, tops, cardigans etc.

If your son loves orange and wants to wear it then good on him for not giving a f*ck about other people’s (unwanted) opinions.

What’s really good for street cred it being confident and comfortable in your own choices.

Edit: my quoted post didn’t show up. It was in response to someone saying orange is bad for street cred.

I think with Northface it really depends on the style. Road men (as my son calls them) seem to go for the black puffa and then there’s the nicer ones which I suppose less of a uniform for them and I think probably more expensive.

I think it’s a bit like the thread on here recently about mum ‘uniform’, clothing brings a sense of belonging to your tribe. In this case the road man tribe 😂

itwasonlyhalloween10minutesago · 07/12/2024 13:53

when I was young I wanted so much to get a Harrington jacket (really showing my age here) because all the cool kids (well cool to me) had one. Same thing, different jacket.

I love this thread btw

WaitingforStrike · 07/12/2024 14:30

Do actual road men still dress the way a 14 year old middle class, conformist "road man" dresses?

Superdry is for men in their 40s and 50s. My DH wears it. I can't imagine it being cool with teens.

I’ve just bought my 32 year old son Superdry hoodies for Christmas. They were chosen and tried on by him, when he took me shopping. He acknowledges that they are not so fashionable now, as they were when he was younger, but he still loves Superdry. On the other hand, my 30 year old son (who again used to wear them) wouldn’t want me to buy them for him. I don’t think that they are for many men in their 50’s (don’t know what age your dh is) either.

I think the problem for Superdry is that they have quite a limited market now, hence the reason why their shares have completely nosedived and they are struggling to stay afloat in their current form.

I'm 58 ( TOTC) Too Old To Care and I wore my long Superdry last week into London.

I had it unzipped as it wasn't as cold as I thought , the zipper bit kept banging on my shin.

Not Cool , just painful .

Orange is no more visible in the dark than black. Unless it has reflective material on it, the colour of the garment makes no difference

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/12/2024 16:16

There's an update.

Email arrived yesterday from Superdry to say that the original coat was out of stock. So DH took DS shopping today, and with all of Sheffield to choose from, DS chose this in navy with the orange lining. He didn't like the brown lining in the orange version. He likes the coat because it is long enough in the arms and body (unusual) and because it is waterproof and very warm. He's also declared that he wouldn't wear a TNF coat if you paid him. (TNF hoodies and T shirts remain acceptable). He's embracing the geek and rejecting trends.

His school cohort is genuinely not really that label conscious. They are very sporty, ds is not, and casual wear is generally based on sports kit (Umbro, Nike, Addidas). We are on the edge of Pennines surrounded by farmland, not Fulham. Maybe I was overthinking because I grew up in central London and never quite found my tribe.,

When I am driving I certainly find brighter colours more noticeable at dawn and dusk.

Sounds perfect, suits HIS needs. Also sounds like good parenting and a great friendship group as he doesn't feel the need to follow others blindly

WaitingforStrike · 07/12/2024 16:25

As an early morning driver I can see brighter colours more easily!

Talipesmum · 07/12/2024 16:49

Excellent, coat looks great!

sellotape12 · 07/12/2024 08:28

.. off topic, but what is this trend of teenage boys having a giant mop of curly hair on their head that looks a real mess? I’m so naive because my boy is only two haha. Every teenage boy I see looks the same and he’s hiding under a huge mop on his head. Is it a perm!?

I call it 'llama hair' Grin.

WandsOut · 08/12/2024 08:47

Superdry very very much in demand for teens here. A while back we asked for a donation of clothes for a child who had recently been fostered, lots of great quality Superdry stuff came from people's teens for that and he was absolutely thrilled because everything was in brilliant condition.

WandsOut · 08/12/2024 08:52

A note on the recent Suoerdry women's stuff I've really liked actually, very Camden circa 2000, black fake fur coats, tartan etc. I know another poster didn't understand the display, it was really alternative familiar to me and my daughter loved it all.

But as I said the teens love it here.

That orange coat is fab, OP. I think it will last.

Mirabai · 08/12/2024 08:56

Navy with orange lining is a better look all round. Hope he enjoys wearing it.

Midlifecareerchange · 08/12/2024 14:13

Can someone please tell me what a road man is? I'm so intrigued by the fact that all the kids I teach who pay over 30K a year in school fees are all dressed as Road men.

Mirabai · 08/12/2024 15:09

It’s been defined on the thread several times.

It’s hardly surprising if teens from different income brackets favour the same brands. Same goes for Nike, Apple etc
