Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

Orange Parka

Can someone please tell me what a road man is? I'm so intrigued by the fact that all the kids I teach who pay over 30K a year in school fees are all dressed as Road men.

Plenty of 'posh' kids emulate the roadman vibe both in dress and how they speak.

KittenPause · 08/12/2024 18:01

Due to the magic of social media Superdry is now ok to wear again for teens

Orange is no more visible in the dark than black. Unless it has reflective material on it, the colour of the garment makes no difference

Yes it is

All light and bright colours are better than black at night

CosyLemur · 08/12/2024 19:05

Superdry is the brand of choice for my teens and their friends!

celticprincess · 08/12/2024 19:10

This is really interesting. When I was on supply teaching about 13 years ago it was super dry that was the coat to wear. Every school o went into across 3 bordering counties.

Now my kids are teens, their school it’s all black Canada Zavetti. I have also seen a few posts on the parent groups about missing north face coats too so think there’s both around. My kids have neither. My eldest wears a bright coloured supermarket coat in their choice of colour and wouldn’t be seen dead in anything with a designer label. They’re autistic. Youngest picked their tog 24 coat based on the colour too (not black) and also dead between that and their slightly more waterproof horse riding coat that’s a bit longer. They’re not massively into the brands the kids at school wear but is into the horsey brands like le Mieux and Aubrion. Neither have been picked on for their coats though. But I can spot both of them when the school crow moves down the cycle path!! lol.

I’m a middle age mum and got a super dry back 12 years ago when it seemed fashionable and loved my long coat that was like a diver inside for when I was out with the pram. First time I’d spent that much on a coat. Decided a couple of years ago to stick with the brand but get a nicer colour. I get loads of compliments on it. But can’t say I’ve seen any kids recently wearing super dry. However o agree with someone who commented about the clothing in their stores. It’s definitely not aimed at the middle aged people!! lol. But possibly more the less crowd following individual.

Personally I don’t get the whole north face/canada zavetti obsession. Something else will be along in a few years.

uptheculdesac · 08/12/2024 19:16

North face is no longer cool. It's so mainstream that the cool kids won't wear them

Carhartt is pretty cool. Or niche brands I've never heard of that they seem to all get from overseas.

SpanielsSunflowersSand · 08/12/2024 19:39

I was going to suggest ridgeline as they do a lovely burnt orange coat and it’s honestly so hardwearing and great for country folk!

ZoeDavoMCR · 08/12/2024 20:47

Go for North Face or Mountain Equipment

KittenPause · 08/12/2024 20:54

I asked DD and yes Superdry is definitely being worn again by teens

Emmz1510 · 08/12/2024 20:58

Oops just as well I don’t have a teenager cos I was going to say I really like the coat!

Superdry is for men in their 40s and 50s. My DH wears it. I can't imagine it being cool with teens.

My 19 year olds favourite brand is Superdry.

Fizzygoo · 08/12/2024 22:25

Superdry do gorgeous rara skirts that my daughter wears 😆

coats wise it’s Barbour/north face/urban outfitters

Dawevi · 08/12/2024 22:48

Thanks for all the replies to my comment, DH will be delighted to know he is trendy! 😄

HikingforScenery · 08/12/2024 22:55

I don’t even think about brands ( I avoid fast fashion), if I like it, I buy it and wear it . Same goes for my DC.
They’ve never fussed about this brand or that or no this or not that.

I like the coat he’s chosen. Good for him, going for the item he likes, be it seen as fashionable by others or not.

There’s an indie secondary near me and a lot of the kids are still in North Face coats. It seems they’re behind the times.

downthebackofthesettee · 08/12/2024 23:27

Grandson is 14. Superdry is his favourite brand.

Noangelbuthavingfun · 08/12/2024 23:31

This is so interesting ! A year ago it was all about NF and Zavetti where we are. Now my DS wouldn't be seen dead in them... and would rather wear unbranded. Its all about Stussy etc... and I used to wear that in the 90s 😄
OP as you can see it's so area dependent bug what your boy loves

NeonGreenHighlighter · 08/12/2024 23:36

My 15 yo daughter (ASD) gives no fucks about brands and got a cute superdry puffer. I would quite happily borrow it myself.

Ive had a superdry for the winter for the last 2/3 years. Couldn’t care less what others think

my 13 yo however, is getting a north face nuptse for christmas

justasking111 · 09/12/2024 00:10

My son aged 14 wanted superdry. So well made I thought. Nine years later he still has it. Now living in Yorkshire I wonder if he's wearing it again.

Oh no. I’m a man in my 40s and believed i was down with the youth of today. Thanks for the heads up!

Jellytrain · 09/12/2024 06:35

Superdry definitely more for our age ie parents! North Face from Vinted I would recommend!

No apparently you are! I've been corrected!

Ablar · 09/12/2024 07:50

My nearly 18 year old hates NF, he'll happily wear a parka/puffer from boohoo, Nike, adidas. If kids take the piss out of a coat, then it says more about them

Tireddadplus · 09/12/2024 09:07

Dawevi · 09/12/2024 07:27

Excellent! Just off to make some tiktok vids in my new superdry grey polo shirt! Matches my hair

Igavebirthtoabanana · 09/12/2024 09:52

My 16 yo DS’ favourite hoody is Superdry. He also has few of their t-shirts. He’s a polar opposite of a roadman, being a keen explorer scout. He’s also been in a single sex grammar school. I wonder if that plays into the brand awareness at all.. he also happily wears DH’s cast off Lacoste polo shirts.

I first heard the term roadman in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman movie, which came out five years ago.

bigkidatheart · 09/12/2024 09:58

originalvanillaicecream · 06/12/2024 17:07

So they are not wearing NF, Berghaus or CG then.

It's only the CG that's a copy - I can afford the others, just not an £800 coat for a teenager!
