Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

Orange Parka

SuperDry defo not cool amongst the teens here I'm afraid.

Lots wearing Uniqlo and berghaus though - which surprised me as I wear those brands too and I'm a middle aged mum 😂

Of the outdoors (rather than sports) brands, the North Face seems popular amongst the teens I work with. All black though... I've actually raised with work that we need to change our uniform rules because black outdoor wear is just not safe

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/12/2024 20:27

That's what I thought.

Superdry is for men in their 40s and 50s. My DH wears it. I can't imagine it being cool with teens.

He'd love a North Face jacket, a big puffy down one, but we live in rural West Yorks, and I'm not paying that much for a coat that's not even waterproof.

Ad it happens I used to do a lot of mountain sports, and had an "original" north face down jacket in the early 90s. It's a bit grotty now though!

Yes Superdry is for middle aged men trying to be young and trendy - I rib my OH about it. North Face has been popular here in recent years with teens.

Their short little summer tops, whether outright cropped or technically not yet not full length, are for 40-60 year old men?

North Face Dryvent coats are waterproof.

Anotheranonymousname · 05/12/2024 20:38

North Face Dryvent coats are also on ebay - that's where my teens' ones came from. 15-yr-old wears Superdry hoodies very happily but I've never seen a middle aged man in one.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/12/2024 20:44

Thiis is so area dependent. My kids have superdry coats and shock horror they actually wear them unlike anything else they have had before.

Only Roadmen wear North Face.

Donotgogentle · 05/12/2024 20:46

Uniqlo seems popular as a North Face alternative amongst teens in London. Definitely cheaper!

Manchesterbythesea · 05/12/2024 20:48

It’s really uncool.

Gravitasdepleted · 05/12/2024 20:51

I think so long as the coat itself is quite cool it probably wont matter what the brand is. Orange can go either way, he doesnt want to look like a traffic cone. What about ebay, this one looks teen friendly to me: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126777771488?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338590836&toolid=10044&customid=976c2341ec131f033a604413fdaa643c

You know what... I'm going to ask him.

I'm a teacher and would be pretty bloody angry if a group of students decided to alienate a single child because of the brand of his coat. Does he really want to be friends with these "cool" kids?

I love the way the "nerdy" students dress. Here, they have duffle coats and long heavy trench coats and tartan donkey jackets and they look utterly brilliant. I get it if a student really wants to fit in (and here that appears to be a black coat with North Face written on it), but if he wants an orange parka, I would buy the orange parka.

Quite honestly... he probably doesn't mind.

You're right. I'm probably thinking about this much more than him.

Patagonia and Napapijri equally as cool but not quite as spenny as North Face. It is NOT only road men who wear NF 😂

I think North Face is a 'love it or hate it' sort of brand. I noticed that tons of the older teens around us wear it and thought I would get 'cool mum' points by suggesting we get one for 16 year old DS. He declined in the strongest terms and said the same thing about it being for 'roadmen' or wannabe roadmen. (obviously I then had to ask what a roadman is- originally something to do with drugs apparently)

HisMajestysSecretCervix · 05/12/2024 21:05

If he'd live a north face, then get him a north face

Just add some high vis little strips if need he

Asuitablecat · 05/12/2024 21:06

I look at coats closely in work, as ds is the same. Luckily (or unluckily) I also have a 13 yr old who cares more.
North face is always popular.
Seen some mountain warehouse.
Zavatti thingy.
Montirex.
Ds has a berghouse rain jacket, as he just puts it over his blazer anyway.

I have a man's superdry hoodie which I love cos it's thicker than a woman's. And the sleeves are better.

Fargo79 · 05/12/2024 21:12

Round here, North Face is most definitely for wannabe road men.

I honestly have no clue who the target market for Superdry are. Walked past one of their stores the other day and the female mannequins were dressed in tiny tartan micro mini skirts and thigh high socks.

Maybe something from somewhere like Patagonia, Finisterre, Passenger etc?

DoYouReally · 05/12/2024 21:16

I'm convinced no adult can determine cool in the same way teenagers do. It even varies depending on location.

When I live, Superdry is typically 40s dad still making some effort. Northface is the uniform of little scrots who have been or should be sent to juvenile court.

Surprises with teenage clothes rarely works unless chosen by another teenage or him or his friends.
